IASP vary on is an IPL for a subset of storage

Long IPL steps are likely to be long vary on steps

IPL has console, IASP vary on has DSPASPSTS

Most performance enhancements apply to both vary on and IPL

Performance enhancements have been incrementally delivered

IASP vary on vs. IPL

1) Apply PTFs which deliver performance improvements:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1020998

2) Increase hardware resources

Cores, Memory, I/O subsystem

3) Consider application/environment changes

Eliminate inefficient practices to gain vary on/IPL efficiencies

4) Identify problem areas for IBM to investigate

Many enhancements are direct result of customer investigations

Four ways to improve iASP Vary On performance

Database Initialization– Reduced unnecessary deleted entry count recovery

– Customer had reduction from 90 to 20 mins, 120 to 22 mins

Database Access Path Recovery– Honor RECOVER attribute for Access Paths that are MAINT(*DLY)

– Customer had 5 hour reduction

Spool Initialization– Resolved problem and removed unnecessary processing

Recent significant enhancements

Database Recovery – Pre-bring data more aggressively and remove unnecessary processing

– Reduced 14 mins to 7 mins

New environment variable creates more QDBSRV jobs in IASP– QIBM_IASP_QDBSRV_JOBS increases parallel Access Path recovery

Journal Synchronization (and subsequent steps)– Write Journal sync points to disk more aggressively to reduce recovery

Vary off, Writing changes to disk– Parallelized shutdown in 7.3

– Removed 1 of 3 passes thru memory (also IPL enhancement)

And more enhancements
