Two business imperatives are driving a fast growing need for data center consolidation and relocation services

Reduce IT costs Data center replacements are typically a board level investment decision Bringing current data centers up to modern standards of energy efficiency and reliability is expensive Capex / opex investment reduces investment in new business systems Many organization are moving to co-location facilities in an effort to avoid costs

Improving the resiliency of the IT infrastructure Distributed data centers are difficult to manage and require expensive system management tools IT sprawl is not always visible.. and never manageable. Geographies, brands and operating

departments build their own IT environments... usually outside of corporate IT standards New resiliency standards make integrating IT systems from acquisitions increasingly difficult Some regulatory standards require improved resiliency, especially in the financial services sector

An MEA country is consolidating all IT systems and operations into 2 hardened data centers to improve data security and create a critical

mass of technology expertise

A Department of Defense in AP is consolidating 280 data center / closets to 4 to reduce cost and improve resiliency

A financial services firm in Latin America is consolidating all country level data centers and systems into 2 highly efficient data centers

Executive summary

Ensuring applications move within pre-defined outage windows for flawless execution is more complex than you might expect

Structured IT discovery is always a pre-requisite for obtaining complete and accurate data required to plan a relocation

Building an experienced team leveraging best practices with the right platform, architecture and relocation skills will reduce your risk and expense

We have helped many clients successfully relocate their data centers and can help you determine how to get started.

What is your biggest challenge when considering a data center consolidation or relocation?

1. Understanding our IT infrastructure and dependencies

2. Unknown risks in the infrastructure

3. Experience and skills

4. Lack of a planning methodology

Client inventories are generally 70%-90% accurate but a more accurate inventory with logical server to server dependencies is required to plan for a relocation

Analytics for Logical Dependency Mapping (ALDM) is a simple shell/VBE script executed by the client system admins on their servers without requiring IBM skills or IBM access to their systems.

ALDM requires no agents, probes or .exe’s The script creates a data file for each server

which is then combined with other data files and parsed by IBM to produce the outputs

Outputs includes: Collected and parsed data in csv format Visualizations of the server to server

connections and installed middleware Multi level server dependency mapping

Analytics for Logical Dependency Mapping (ALDM)

The most important success factor in relocations is obtaining complete and accurate IT infrastructure information early in the project

ALDM results in a faster and more comprehensive discovery effort and yields insights into infrastructure configurations and risks

Server to server dependency diagrams describe how the infrastructure is actually configured

Server to server dependency diagrams Identifies dependency relationships of each server and it’s nearest neighbor Identifies unidirectional and bidirectional dependencies Identifies selected installed middleware Identifies “orphan” servers Multiple levels of data support many needs

Understand how the environment is configured and operates in practice Helps identify servers that need to move in unison to maintain application

availability Identifies middleware installs and legacy software which can be removed

resulting in cost savings and improved resiliency Quick identification of “orphan” servers which may affect the integrity of the

applications

“By working with IBM, we were able to effectively prepare for the potential risks associated with this critical move. By the end of the project, we had a new data center in place without any service interruptions to our customers.”

— IBM Client

Business challenge: With the lease for the building that hosted its current data center drawing to a close, a telecommunications solution provider, needed to migrate infrastructure and operations to a new facility. Unfortunately, rapid growth had left the business with an aging IT architecture and discrepant system dependencies. The firm could not risk any outages to its business operations during the migration.

Solution: IBM Global Technology Services – Integrated Technology Services coordinated with the firm to outline its business requirements for the migration to a new data center and to determine any challenges that would impact service delivery to its customers. The IBM staff then successfully migrated the systems to a new a new data center while taking steps to account for business restrictions and migration limitations.

A mid sized telecommunications firm moves to a larger, easier-to-manage data center without interrupting critical operations thanks to IBM

Benefits: Relocated client operations seamlessly, avoiding any outages or interruptions

while migrating to a new IT architecture

Established common IT standards that streamline management operations and enable automation of routine tasks

Simplified the rollout of new server hardware, reducing the process from two weeks to less than one day

All data center relocation projects have common success elements

1. IT discovery can be a lengthy process but it is critical to plan the relocation using accurate, complete and timely data

2. Fixing unsupported environments in advance makes the relocation simpler, less expensive and less risky

3. Map equipment refresh cycles to the relocation schedule to maximize investment in current platforms

4. 90% of unplanned events are network related

5. Establish strong project leadership and build consensus within the IT and end user organizations; especially for critical applications

What are your future data center plans?

1. Migrate to a new company owned data center

2. Migrate to a collocation facility

3. Better understand our IT infrastructure

4. No migrations plans at this time
