The northwest of Zamora preserves the natural and cultural places of our heritage and it is a must-see. The Rural Hotel “Hospedería El Pico

del Fraile”, is strategically located between the Sierra de la Culebra and the Natural Park of Lago de Sanabria, and with “Llobu Ecoturismo y Medioambiente” offer an ecotourism program for a weekend to show at visitors some of these emblematic values.

Looking for the wildlife in silence and with patience, we can see the movements of the wolf, the groups of roe deer, always attentive to the environmental threats, the wonderful roedeer and the elusive wildboar. We will wait at dawn in the Sierra de la Culebra (an area with large density of wolves), using telescopes and binoculars from high places with good visibility.

We will visit the “Cortello dos Lobos” of Lubián. It is a great trap with walls of stone, built and used for the purpose of the capture of live wolves. It constitutes a wonderful display of architecture from the Northwest Iberian. These traps are almost exclusives of this area in the world (only there are a few similar at the mountains in northern India).

We will enter in the vicinity of Lake Sanabria, the only glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula. With approximately three kilometers long and one and a half wide, this mass of water is perfect to learn about the geology glacier, forests of oak, chestnut, birch and holly and is one of the best places to walk at sunset enjoying amidst breathtaking, calm and beautiful scenery. The village of Ribadelago Viejo, on the shore of the lake, is an ideal place to know traditional architecture of Sanabria.

We will walk around the “El Tejedelo”, it is a valley in the Sierra de la Gamoneda, which has retained the best and most important forest of yew (Taxus baccata) in Zamora. “El Tejedelo” is also one of the few forests of this specie in the Iberian Peninsula. The area has over a hundred ancient yews, and many other trees, some of which exceed eight meters in diameter and thirteen in tall. This wonderful forest of yews mixed with birch, rowan and holly is an idyllic place like a fairytale. The route has an average difficulty and 5.2 km.
