Background
• Mosquito born diseases are major public health problem in India. Gujarat is endemic for malaria and other mosquito born diseases.
• The National Malaria control programme has been launched in 1952 and it has been renamed as National Vector Born Disease Control Programme in 2003
• Studies have reveled that human knowledge, attitude and practice of various methods of personal and household protection against mosquito bites vary in different endemic regions of tropical countries
Background
• There are many personal protective measures are suggested to prevent mosquito bites. They are mosquito net, screening, repellents, vaporizers and anti mosquito coils. Under National Vector Born Control programme, Government has introduced Insecticide Treated Nets (ITN) for community.
• One of important component of Vector born disease control programme is to impart awareness about mosquito bite prevention in general community. The present study was conducted to assess the awareness and practices of mosquito bites prevention methods among households of Central Gujarat district Vadodara.
Method
• The study was conducted in malaria and dengue endemic urban area of district Vadodara, Central Gujarat.
• It was decided to cover all households of Urban Health Training Center catchment area of department of Communit Medicine, SBKS Medical institute and Research center, Piparia, Dist Vadodara.
Method
• Thus cluster of 311 families were selected to represent the study area. The door to door visit was conducted to visit the all households. The study was conducted in the month of June 2009, which is observed as Anti-Malaria month in state Gujarat.
• Various aspect of mosquito bite, breading places of mosquito, prevention of mosquito bite measures, diseases transmitted by mosquito bite and service utilization for diseases

There were 311 families visited for study.The study population consist of 134 female and 177 male who had participated.

Only 30 house holds (9.6%) were aware about insecticide treated bed-net.
Salient issues
• 31.5% (98) of families had history of fever in last one year.
• They all know the blood examination test for malaria parasite.
• The average cost for that fever was 675 Rupee but range was very wide from 35 to 10,000 Rs.
• Only 40/98 (50%) people have received some knowledge about prevention of mosquito bite by their doctor.

Conclusion
• The study population has good knowledge about breading places of mosquito but with high fever rate.
• There is need of increasing use of insecticide treated bed net use.
• And continuous updating of knowledge about various aspect of mosquito bite.
