We officially opened the Ian Anderson Resource Centre in May 2004 which was made possible by a generous grant from our longtime supporter, the Donner Canadian Foundation. The Centre was originally designed to provide advocacy, infor- mation and practical resources for those who are caring, at home, for a family member who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. In 2008 the Centre designed a Care- giver’s Toolkit, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foundation, which is a repository of practical resources and information to assist caregivers providing end-of-life care in their homes. To-date, more than 2500 of our toolkits, which have been used as a model to develop similar resources in parts of Ontario, Canada and the United States, have been distributed in Peel and Halton and an estimated 1000 more will be printed and dis- tributed in 2014. Palliative care, as a medical specialty, had in the past been much neglected in Canada as compared to other countries around the world. Today, while more attention is paid to the palliative care field it is basically focused on end-of-life and pain and symptom management. However, with current demograph- ics and the reality of our aging population, palliative care should, and must, include all those with chronic longterm illnesses. We must also be concerned about the health and wellbeing of the caregivers who are providing the necessary care in their homes perhaps to a family member with Alzheimer’s disease. In the near future we plan to expand the focus of the IARC to include necessary support to those longterm family caregivers by researching and working with the community organizations that already provide needed services and hopefully to attempt to fill any gaps that may currently exist in our healthcare systems. As always we are very grateful for and sincerely thank all those whose generous support has made it possible for us to provide quality care to almost 1700 residents in the past sixteen years. An Update from the FounderNovember 15th, 2013 marked the

16th Anniversary of the officialopening of Ian Anderson House.

For these past sixteen years ourhospice has undergone manychanges and improvements whichwere based on our day-to-day experi-ences. We have streamlined thenecessary administrative paperworkand made structural changes toimprove the efficiency and smooth-running of the hospice which allowsthe staff to spend the necessary timewith our residents. After the EasternSeaboard major power failure in2003 we had a generator installed toensure the safety of all in the House, which has since been used frequent-ly. All of these changes were madeafter much discussion with our staffand with careful consideration byour board members. All were subse-quently made based on the needs, comfort and safety of our residents, families and staff.

One of our long-term goals whichis, in fact, an integral part of the phi-losophy of hospice and palliativecare, was the creation of a resourcecentre to address the needs ofcaregivers in our community. We

officially opened the Ian AndersonResource Centre in May 2004 whichwas made possible by a generousgrant from our longtime supporter, the Donner Canadian Foundation.

The Centre was originallydesigned to provide advocacy, infor-mation and practical resources forthose who are caring, at home, for afamily member who has beendiagnosed with a terminal illness. In2008 the Centre designed a Care-giver’s Toolkit, funded by theOntario Trillium Foundation, whichis a repository of practical resourcesand information to assist caregiversproviding end-of-life care in theirhomes. To-date, more than 2500 ofour toolkits, which have been used asa model to develop similar resourcesin parts of Ontario, Canada and theUnited States, have been distributedin Peel and Halton and an estimated1000 more will be printed and dis-tributed in 2014.

Palliative care, as a medicalspecialty, had in the past been muchneglected in Canada as compared toother countries around the world.

Today, while more attention ispaid to the palliative care field it is

basically focused on end-of-life andpain and symptom management. However, with current demograph-ics and the reality of our agingpopulation, palliative care should, and must, include all those withchronic longterm illnesses. We mustalso be concerned about the healthand wellbeing of the caregivers whoare providing the necessary care intheir homes perhaps to a familymember with Alzheimer’s disease.

In the near future we plan toexpand the focus of the IARC toinclude necessary support to thoselongterm family caregivers byresearching and working with thecommunity organizations thatalready provide needed services andhopefully to attempt to fill any gapsthat may currently exist in ourhealthcare systems.

As always we are very grateful forand sincerely thank all those whosegenerous support has made itpossible for us to provide quality careto almost 1700 residents in the pastsixteen years.

Our VolunteersPhyllis Godfree

Phyllis joined us in the summer of 2009. She had heardabout Ian Anderson House from a friend and decided to applyas a volunteer. She had volunteered at West Oak Village duringand after her Mother was a resident there and currently alsovolunteers at the Credit Valley Chemo Clinic.

Phyllis is in the hospice on Wednesday afternoons andevenings and volunteers her help, not only at our fundraisers, but also at third-party events. She feels that her life “has beenenriched” by her many experiences at IAH and is “proud to bea part of our first-class caregiving hospice”.

Louise first came to Ian Anderson House in 1997 when shewas employed by Halton Red Cross as a Home Support Worker. From that time until the year 2000 she also had extensiveemployment experiences with The Children’s Aid Society as asocial worker. Louise describes herself as being required tomanage her busy schedule, at that time, with “discipline andhumour”.

Louise joined Ian Anderson House in 2001 and has becomea dedicated and untiring member of our “care team”.

Each year we receive many cards and letters from families ofour residents who express their appreciation, not only for thecare provided by our staff to the family member who is aresident, but also for the empathy and care shown to the family. Louise and our staff andvolunteers understand and instinctively offer those acts of kindness to help families througha very difficult time.

A Tribute to Our VolunteersOur volunteers are a valuable and essential part of our Ian

Anderson House “care team” who allow our staff to spend the necessary timecaring for residents. All who apply are interviewed and subsequently receive

“in house” training that is tailored to the day-to-day functioning of the hospice. Our volunteers answer telephone calls, greet visitors, prepare meals and snacks

for residents and perform light household and administrative tasks. An important role for our volunteers is to familiarize visiting families with the

mechanical functions and safety features of the House. They are also needed to spendtime, perhaps in our kitchen, with families to chat or, more important, to listen.

We are also very grateful to those dedicated volunteers who not only volunteer inthe House but who offer their time to help at our annual and at “third party”fundraising events.

WelcomeWe welcome Heidi Murray-Harrigan, our new part-time Volunteer Co-ordinator,

who joined us on April 3, 2013.Heidi was formerly Manager of Volunteer Services and Programmes at reBoot

Canada and a consultant for volunteer functions at an organization located inBrampton. This past year she has also served as a volunteer on committees at St.Joan of Arc and other schools.

Heidi has a Fundraising and Volunteer Management Certificate from GeorgeBrown College and is currently undertaking additional Microsoft courses atSheridan College.

We all welcome Heidi as a new member of our Ian Anderson House “care team”.

Remembering . . .Betty Smith

We were very saddened, in August of this year, tolearn of the death of Betty Smith who was a longtimevolunteer at our hospice. Betty, who manned thereception desk and telephone, greeted callers warmly andprofessionally and chatted with family members andfriends who were waiting to visit a resident. She will besadly missed by her family and by all who knew her.

Marjorie StaceyMarjorie, a longtime volunteer, was always pleasant

and kind to our residents and their families. Herspecialty sausage rolls, which were home baked, werealways a big hit at Ian Anderson House. Marjorie, whodied last August, was a very special lady, who will bemuch missed.

In Appreciation of the supporters of IAHWe sincerely thank all those who have made donations to Ian Anderson House since the publication of our

A Profile of a Supporter of IAHMarie José Overweel

Marie José Overweel has generously supported Ian Anderson Housefor the past 13 years, beginning with a sponsorship to our Garden madein memory of her nephew. She has been a major sponsor and aparticipant at our fundraising events and donates an anniversary giftto our Hospice each November.

Marie José’s husband, Jan, died of prostate cancer in 2001 in CreditValley Hospital and since that time she has included the hospital amongmany charities that she supports. This past year she was prominentlyfeatured in the Globe and Mail newspaper for co-funding a one milliondollar Grant toward the campaign for the inclusion of future roboticsurgery in the hospital. The newspaper article stated that since herhusband’s death Marie José has donated almost two million dollars in total to Credit Valley hospital.

Marie José describes herself as someone who “loves to give” and we are very grateful and sincere-ly thankful that she has chosen to include Ian Anderson House among her many philanthropicendeavours.
