TOOLS help us MAKE our things.TECHNOLOGY is the science of TOOLS.
SCIENCE help us trust our thinking,With reliable methods and procedures.
ENGINEERING helps us BEST make, and use tools. (ART promotes the beauty of nature and our creative instincts.)MATHEMATICS promotes symbols andprocedures that make our creations more accurate, reliable and efficient.
“STEM” or “STEAM”.. ???
LEARNING THEORIES AND BEST TEACHING PRACTICES SHOW THAT LEARNING IS MORE EFFECTIVE WHEN:
then: Why not try to do this...??
“STEM” or “STEAM”.. ???
• It involves “doing or MAKING real-world things” (Technology, Maker Faire), and doing them well
(Engineering, Mathematics, “hard” Science)• It feels participative, empowering and enjoyable to the senses and the brain (Social, Industrial, Fine Arts)• It presents meaningful topics in challenging ways (Engineering, ”industrial” Arts, “cognitive” Science)• Learning develops from simple to complex (Engineering, Pedagogy, “cognitive” Science)• Foster cooperation & community (social Science)
I - USING OWN BODY – Hands, legs, feet, mouth for transforming objects (forcing, punching, biting, ripping, etc.)
II - RAW NATURAL OBJECTS – Using stones, sticks and other natural objects as they are in the environment
IV - POWERED PHYSICAL – Using wind, water, steam, chemical, electrical energy to increase the power of our tools and machines
III - SIMPLE MODIFIED NATURAL – Using molded, sharpened, transformed objects: sticks, stones, fire, water, wind, etc.
V – “SMART” tools – Using automated and robotic tools and machines
FUNCTIONAL EVOLUTION OF TOOLSEVOLUTION
When should we use each type?Hi Makers!
Extending our powers:
Shaping: • Breaking, separating -cutting, piercing, pounding, smashing,
digging, drilling, splitting, etc.• Joining - fastening, nailing, screwing, gluing, welding riveting,
assembling, dissolving, molding, etc.Moving and protecting • Transporting – moving, sliding, raising, hauling, dragging,
catapulting, etc.• Sheltering and Covering - encasing, covering, housing, , etc.Guiding, feeling and measuring - sensing direction, monitoring and controlling physical quality, etc.
WE MAKE TOOLS FOR:
Assist thinking & communications - collecting multisensory information by the senses, storing, processing in and out of the brain and all associated neural and motor systems.
Today, we make “smart” tools and machines to assist our natural powers by imitating and extending our bodies (systems) and organs (subsystems):
Tools for:VISION (SEEING)TOUCH-FEELINGHEARINGSMELLINGTASTING
Tools for: Brain and memory LEARNING THINKING and DECIDING
Tools for:TOUCH-
PUSHING,IMPACTING,
SHAPINGand
MOVINGINFORMATION
and ENERGY
How do we extend our powers?:
INFORMATION and ENERGY
BIG DOG ROBOT
WARRIOR CYBORG (AVATAR)
MARS EXPLORER ROBOT
“Smart” Tools: we expand our Capabilities – with
tools that imitate Natural Systems
TOOLS for SEEINGExtending our powers:
TOOLS for HEARINGExtending our powers:
TOOLS for SMELLINGExtending our powers:
TOOLS for TASTING& FEEDINGExtending our powers:
TOOLS for TOUCHING-FEELING-DOING
TOOLS for THE BRAIN(THINKING and MAKING DECISIONS)
SHOULD THE “21st Century” K-12 CURRICULUM HAVE MORE FOCUS ON AGE-APPROPRIATE
TOOLS and TECHNOLOGIES, VALUE AND ENJOYMENT, WHILE ACTIVELY SUPPORTING OTHER
SUBJECTS & SKILLS (i.e.TEAMS)?
QUESTION:
“TRADITIONAL” SUBJECTS AND TOPICS, JUST IN A MORE RATIONAL, MOTIVATIONAL, LOGICAL ORDER, AND PACE
