VOLUNTEERING
Volunteering is an activity intended to promote goodness and improve
standards of living. It consists in helping, assisting or serving others
without expecting something in return.
This activity has benefited me in many aspects. It has impacted me in the
way I see life, in my personality and also in my way of living.
“The only gift is a portion of thyself.”
Ralf Waldo Emerson.
Ways in which I have volunteered
• Educating.
• Entertaining.
• Community Service
• Donating.
Educating• Ethics and values (Recommending concepts of
right or wrong, instructing about principles or
standards of behavior)
Contribute with the formation of young people who
have limited access to education and are surrounded by
an environment full of violence and drugs. To teach
them how to act in such circumstances.• Tools for approaching problems (offering
advice to face daily life challenges)
Taking into account the problems young people
confront on their daily life, I participated in a group
at which we discussed what each one was going
through and the best way to handle it.
Educating
• Math (Teaching math skills to those who have
been left behind in their studies)
Help those needing to improve their math skills, so that
they can reach another level of studies, contributing in
this way to their preparation for facing the business
world and the possibility of making a living.
• English (Teaching English as a second language)
Giving kids coming from lower classes the opportunity
to learn and understand English and get to open new
doors with this language.
Entertaining
• Games (Organizing games and activities to ease tension among people who live in
communities where violence and drugs prevail)
Organize activities and play games with kids and adults. In this way, we help them reduce tension that may exist
in the different groups of their communities
Help kids relax and distract them from a difficult situation they might be facing at their home. To give them the
chance to have a different time, sharing moments with their community.
Teach children how they can spend their spare time in a fun and healthy way instead of heading for the use of
drugs that are the cause of all of their problems.
Community Service
• Activities for improving conditions of educational institutions.
Performing habitat restoration, reconstruction of new classrooms for public
schools in low-income areas.
• Assisting the elderly and orphans.
Give these people a spirit of happiness, an opportunity to spend a different time
by doing activities in which they can interact with each other. In this way, they
receive a positive impact by feeling alive.
DonatingMember of a corporation that executes projects for donating and collecting things for
those who are in need.
• Collect books for building a library at a public school. In this way, we contribute to
the education of children by providing them the necessary tools for studying.
• Collect clothes for people who need them.
• Make baskets full of gifts for children in Christmas, offering them a moment of
happiness with a smile in their faces.
How it contributes to my personal and
professional development
• I have opened my mind to different realities. I have learned how to see life from another
perspective and understood what others might be passing through.
• I have learned about myself. Thanks to all the activities I have done while volunteering, I have
developed hidden skills that have helped me in my development as a professional at the time of
making a presentation or working with a team and also at the time of organizing events.
• I have gained self-confidence. Being a volunteer gives me a sense of pride and identity, which has
helped me feel better about myself and have a positive view of my life and future goals.
• It has broaden my network. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to meet new people and
to make new connections with people that otherwise I would not have met.
• It has made me a grateful person. After sharing many experiences with less privileged people, I
value things more than I used to and appreciate everything that anyone does for me.
• I have gained patience. Since I began providing help to people by tutoring them or giving classes,
I have developed patience and also learned to control myself. This ability has helped me improve
my relationships.
• I have grown as a person. Volunteering has contributed to my personal development. I have
grown as a person, strengthening my values and principles. Now I feel prepared for future
challenges.
• I have learned many new things. Volunteering has given me an experiential learning, I have
learned through experiences, through action and by doing. This has given me the ability to
know how to face daily-life obstacles.
• It has given me the feeling of belonging to something. Volunteering gives me the sense of
being needed and valued for my contributions while keeping me mentally and physically
active. At the same time, this has given me self-confidence, taught me not to give up, and
remind me of what I am capable of.
• I have gained responsibility. Since volunteering activities require responsibility, I have
become an organized person who can manage time for everything.
• It has given me a good feeling about myself. While I make volunteering activities and see
their results and the impact they have on society, I feel good about myself because I can see
that with small efforts, a big difference can be made and that someone benefits from my help.
