BOARDWALKQUARTETThe phrase “This is not your father’s quartet” does not apply to Boardwalk! Created from a rich history of fatherly musical influences, Boardwalk combines great barbershop harmo-nies, creative instrumentation, and vintage folk music to create the unique and highly enter-taining fusion they call barber-folk. Inspired by the music and fashion of the 1920’s, this group takes audiences on a journey back to a simpler time, where the songs of the day put a tap in your foot and a smile on your face. Hang on to your seats, as you are about to see what the Boardwalk experience is all about. Fun things happen here!

Brad Hine, tenor, is an alumnus of the Univer-sity of Georgia where he started as a classical guitar major, and finished with a political science degree. An accomplished performer, he has sung with the Zamboni Brothers and The Bungee Chords quartets and has never met a string instrument he didn’t like.

David Calland, baritone, toured Europe and Mexico with the American Boy Choir Fed-eration at age 11 and then was introduced to barbershop singing by his grandfather. He studied Music Education at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. David is a five-

PAUL WIGLEYPaul Wigley graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in music education (’77) and received his master’s degree in music education from the University of Northern Iowa (’93). Recently retired from teaching choral music, advanced placement music theory, and class guitar at Lakeville (MN) North High School, Paul enjoyed numerous regional honors for his vocal jazz ensemble and toured extensively in Europe with the LNHS Chorale. He previously taught for the Algona (IA) Community School Dis-trict, which was the recipient of the Iowa Exemplary Music Program Award in November of 1998. He has delivered lectures on vocal jazz and barbershop harmony to many colleges and choral directors associations throughout the Midwest.

A popular clinician, Paul has worked with barbershop Youth in Harmony festivals in Wisconsin, Iowa, and Minnesota, and is currently the director of the Minneapolis Commodores, who qualified for the international barber-shop chorus contest in 2007 and 2009. He is currently Category Specialist in the Music category of the Barbershop Harmony Society judging system, and most recently served as facilitator for the BHS judging seminar in the United Kingdom.

time international medalist quartet lead singer, and directs The Alliance of Greater Central Ohio, a three-time international medalist chorus.

Mark Schlinkert, lead, began vocal training quite early as a boy soprano. His parents were barbershop harmony singers, so this exposure to singing and performing gave him a true love for the stage.

Jared Carlson, bass, was the tenor singer in BHS International gold medal comedy quartet, Fred. His quick wit and penchant for comedy makes him a highly sought after coach for comedy work. Jared has a wonderful eye for costume fashion.

ANDY LASTDr. Andrew Last is an Assistant Professor of Music at Luther College where he conducts the Collegiate Chorale and the first-year men’s ensemble, Norsemen, and teaches conduct-ing. Last holds a DMA in choral conducting from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a MM from Northern Arizona University, and a BA in music education and voice from Luther College. His high school teaching experience includes positions at both Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids and Tipton High School.

About his session... Making Your Minutes Count Every day, teachers walk into rehearsal with a finite number of minutes to get everything ac-complished. How we, as teachers, manage that time is of utmost importance as we get past the paperwork responsibilities, get past the notes and rhythms, and really get to the heart of the music. This session explores proven strategies that make every minute of every rehearsal count.

SARAH VANWAARDHUISENSarah Van Waardhuizen is in her 11th year of teaching. She has taught choral music to stu-dents at all grade levels and is currently a voice instructor at Central College. Van Waard-huizen enjoys judging show choir and solo/ensemble contests and working with teachers to empower their students in the classroom through autonomy-centered motivation. She has one more year of coursework at The University of Iowa, where she is working on a Ph.D. in Music Education.

About her session... Vocal Pedagogy Through the Ages: Empowering Expansion and Expedi-tion High school singers are establishing their own foundational singing techniques and exploring their sense of vocal freedom. In this session, we will discuss how to talk with a high school student about using their vocal mechanism correctly, what types of language “makes sense” in explaining the vocal tract, and help you feel equipped to teach your students how to care for their own instruments so they can experience a healthy, life-long vocal adventure.

Please consider staying in the NEW, AIR-CONDITIONED rooms at NIACC this year. Think comfort, cost-savings, and community! The costs are outlined on the Registration Form. They are much less expensive than a hotel room, but just as comfortable. Doubles and singles are available. In addition, they are close to our programming and offer a better opportunity to connect with choral colleagues. NIACC has worked hard to design housing that resembles a hotel experience, but with significant cost-savings. Please stay with us and enhance the whole Symposium experience.

STAY AT NIACC!
