Message to the people... For months the fate of Florida A&M University has been a topic of

discussion since the death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion, following the Florida Classic between the Rattlers and long-time rival, the Bethune Cookman University Wildcats.

As a proud graduate and long-time life member of the national alumni association, I was disappointed and saddened to hear of the death, especially when sources reported that hazing was involved.

As I traveled the country, and even in Africa, the discussion about FAMU’s future arose. President James Ammons responded quickly by immediately suspending not only the band, but any type of initiation processes on campus. He later suspended the Band for the 2012-2013 school year.Investigations led to charges filed against 13 band members and there were also some firings. Fingers were also pointed at others. Some alumni were adamant about their support of band director Dr. Julian White, who found his job in jeopardy after over 40 years at the University. Last week FAMU continued to dominate the headlines as Dr. Ammons tendered his resignation, effective in October.Well, earlier this week, once again my phone was racking up minutes as I received calls informing me that Dr. Ammons had stepped down immediately with the FAMU Board of Trustees accepting his resignation

and voting unanimously for Provost Larry Robinson, who has worked at FAMU since 1997, to assume the duties of president.

According to reports, Dr. Ammons “will go on sabbatical and then return to the university as a tenured professor.”

Lack of oversight of the band and the school accounting irregularities, graduation, retention and enrollment rates, and allegations of sexual assault are some of the issues that have been discussed along with FAMU’s future.

It is important to note that according to reports, based on an outside evaluation Dr. Ammons will receive a 25 percent bonus for his performance during the 2010/11 school year and a 5 percent bonus for meeting mutually agreed upon goals for the 2011/12 academic year.

This means that something good was happening at FAMU under his leadership. The issues facing Dr. Ammons did not pop up overnight and they couldn’t all be rectified or eradicated as quickly. Many have said that he inherited many of the issues and he deserved an opportunity to handle them.

I know Dr. Ammons made a lot of folks angry when he suspended the band, but as one alum pointed out to me, you shouldn’t want your child to join a band where there were so

many flagrant violations--something needed to be done. I also know that Dr. Ammons loves FAMU and would never do anything to hurt the University or its students. He is a man of integrity and sincerity who does not take lightly the passing of Mr. Champion or the illegal activities on campus.Unfortunately students, and the non students who were involved in activities that culminated with Mr. Champion’s death, paid no attention to the Florida hazing laws. They didn’t think that they would end up in jail, as is the case in more and more states.And while FAMU is dominating the headlines, this culture of hazing is not unique to the Tallahassee, Fla school or HBCUs. There have been incidents of hazing reported even at high school and middle schools and while you hear primarily about sororities and fraternities;

some who I have talked to say the culture of hazing is so wide-spread that even modeling troupes or dance teams are hazing. Someone jokingly told me that Chess Clubs and bowling teams haze their members.

Now, I understand the need to encourage excellence and that is exactly what was expected from FAMU’s Marching 100; however it is imperative that the system have penalties in place so that “creative” minds won’t come up with their own forms, which are most likely illegal. If he dropped the baton, I think there should be a punishment, like let him sit out a performance or two or make him clean instruments. Whatever you do, don’t resort to physical violence.

My heart goes out to Robert Champion’s parents. They have filed a few lawsuits but I know they would much rather be able to hear their son’s voice and to see him do what he loved to do so much--perform in the band.

There are so many casualties when hazing occurs. When parents send their children to school, they aren’t sending them with the thought that they are going to war and may not come home, but that is exactly what is happening. In addition to the Champion family, the band members who could be imprisoned, Dr. Ammons, Dr. White, staffers who lost their jobs, hundreds of students who were looking forward to attending FAMU to become a member of the incomparable Marching 100 and others, there are so many who will suffer because of a few. This is unfortunate. While the FAMU nation deals with challenges today, it is imperative that we not give up on our schools. No one should be celebrating right now. No one!

fundraising expectations

With less than four months to go before the November election, former state representative Carol Kent enters the general

election cycle with a distinct campaign cash advantage in the race for the new state house district 114 that includes Lake Highlands, Preston Hollow, and portions of East Dallas. Specifically, Kent has almost three times as much as the two Republican candidates combined who are currently tied up in the district 114 primary runoff. Kent raised $142,409.07 between January 1, 2012 and June 30, 2012, and has $127,156.82 cash on hand. In total to date, Kent has raised $200,196.21.“I’m pleased to have so much community support,” said Kent. “It’s truly humbling. It means a lot that the residents in the new state house district 114 believe so much in our campaign. As their representative, I will attract new businesses, grow the local economy, strengthen our neighborhood schools, and protect our air quality and water resources. I don’t intend to let them down.” Kent’s strong fundraising start comes after filing to run in District 114 earlier this year. She will face the winner of the Republican primary runoff on July 31.

Stand Your Ground ....Vote

A coalition of faith, labor, civil and voter rights groups along with community activists launched the Stand Your Ground… Vote, 2012 Ohio Voter Empowerment Tour in Cincinnati this past weekend dispatching a mobile voter registration unit staffed by trained volunteers to various community events to help register new voters, verify voters' registration status, and provide citizens with non-partisan information about the upcoming election. "We registered over 100 new voters over the weekend,"says Petee Talley, convener of the Ohio Unity Coalition. "Thirty volunteers were trained on the process to register voters and looking up individual voter registration information to verify voter registration status. In addition to registering and verifying status, we are targeting voters who have moved or changed their names allowing them to update their registration." Cincinnati is the first stop of a multi-city tour across Ohio. Other cities on the tour include: Dayton, Columbus, Youngstown, Akron, Cleveland, Lorain and Toledo. The mobile unit will remain in each city 7 to 10 days. Election advocates estimate that as many as 1.3 million Ohio voters have been purged from the voter rolls since the last presidential election cycle. The Stand Your Ground… Vote, 2012 Ohio Voter Empowerment Tour is one of the many vehicles the Ohio Unity Coalition will employ to educate voters and make sure eligible voters are prepared to fully participate in the fall 2012 election. Local leaders were excited to partner in this effort, stated Pastor KZ Smith of Corinthian Baptist Church. "Every person needs to be able to exercise their voice and their vote in this election."

Pastor Smith continued, "If we do our part to educate and engage voters, we are empowering them to use the vote that many of us fought so hard to obtain. Our rights have been threatened by voter suppression tactics in recent years and this is our way to Stand Our Ground." The Ohio Unity Coalition is an affiliate of the national Unity Voter Empowerment Campaign covened by the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (www.ncbcp.org). In a recent interview, Princeton University Professor Cornel West and journalist Tavis Smiley railed against President Barack Obama, saying: "He’s rightly associated much more with the oligarchs than with poor people." When the black intelligentsia decides to speak the truth about how Obama does not care about poor black people, it’s a sure sign the average black American has long ago come to grips with this troubling reality. A black commentator, George E. Boykin, gives credence to this assertion in his scathing article “All Hype: Are Black Americans Abandoning Obama in Droves in 2012?” Another journalist, Andres Stiles, published his shocking article “Stunning lack of diversity in Obama campaign,” which shows how Obama has refused to put blacks in his Chicago campaign headquarters. Notably, in 2008, a journalist with the Boston Globe, Binyamin Appelbaum, was so appalled by what Obama did to poor blacks in a Chicago slum that he wrote a lengthy expose entitled “Grim proving ground for Obama's housing policy.” According to that article, then Illinois Senator Obama funneled tax payer’s money to his slum lord buddy and chief fund-raiser, Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who is now a convicted felon. Rezko took tax money but refused to rehabilitate dilapidated housing in a poor black neighborhood in Obama’s district, leaving the buildings to decay to the point where they were no longer habitable. Applebaum’s article also reports that five other developers who raised campaign money for Obama received tax dollars as well. Rezko alone raised at least $200,000, by Obama’s own accounting. Obama also made a shady deal with Rezko in 2005 that helped Obama buy an expensive house in an upscale Chicago neighborhood, well away from poor blacks. Since becoming president, Obama has created 17% black unemployment. He also terminated welfare reform in his budget, which stopped the use of the money to help blacks get jobs and off of welfare. Republican intervention in Congress forced Obama to reinstate welfare reform. Obama has sided with his left-wing supporters in the teachers’ unions, acting against the best interest of poor black children. He eliminated funding for the DC school choice opportunity

scholarship program that was helping black parents get their children out of failing schools. The article by Dick Armey “School Choice = Good for Kids, Bad for Unions. Can't Politicians Do the Math?” explains how Republicans made Obama reinstate the school choice program in DC.

Obama has done nothing to solve our nation’s housing crisis that was created by Democrats who forced banks to make loans to people who could not pay them back. To see just how blacks were devastated by the housing market crash read the article “How Obama Bankrupted Black Homeowners.” In a speech to the Congressional Black Caucus, Obama had the gall to tell black people to stop complaining and stop whining about the harm he has caused and go out to vote for him. Thomas Sowell in his article “Stop Whining'?” points out just how insulting Obama is to black Americans, while catering to other groups, such as gays and Hispanics. A hard-hitting article “Race In America - Are blacks hypocrites or stupid?” by Ben Kinchlow addresses the issue of why blacks are voting 80-90% for Obama in the face of his utter disdain for black Americans. Kinchlow wrote the eye-opening book “Black YellowDogs,” which further explores why black Americans now vote monolithically for the Democratic Party, even though, as author Michael Scheuer wrote, the Democratic Party is the party of the four S’s: slavery, secession, segregation and now socialism. There are two articles which demonstrate in stark detail Obama’s socialist end-game for America, an end where our entire country looks like the black communities he has destroyed. One article is “Detroit: The Moral of the Story” by Kevin D. Williamson. The other article is the Investor’s Business Daily editorial “Decline In Obama's Chicago Clue To His Second Term.” To understand how Obama could be so morally bankrupt that he would deliberately hurt poor black children, one need only look into his background that he and his liberal media allies have tried to either downplay or keep hidden from the public.

Obama’s white mother was a socialist from Kansas and his black Kenyan father was a Marxist, as was his Indonesian step-father. His childhood mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, was an avowed Communist. Obama had a 20-year relationship with

Rev. Jeremiah Wright who spewed out hateful, anti-American rhetoric. Obama also consorted with domestic terrorists, Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorn. In his book, “Dreams From My Father,” Obama bragged about how he sought out Marxists professors and used drugs while in college. The article “Obama and His Pot-Smoking ‘Choom Gang’” by ABC News reporter, Jonathan Karl, sheds light on Obama’s pot-smoking past. Another journalist, Gavon Laessig, went into further details about Obama’s drug abuse in the article “A User's Guide To Smoking Pot With Barack Obama.” While in Chicago, Obama took his Marxist leanings to a new height and joined a third party dedicated to socialism. Details are provided in the article “Obama’s Third-Party History - New documents shed new light on his ties to a leftist party in the 1990s” by Stanley Kurtz. An even more disturbing account of Obama’s radical socialist past is provided in the article “Barack Obama — portrait of a socialist as a not so very young man” by Paul Mirengoff . Obama launched his 2012 re-election campaign based on the Marxist tenets of class warfare and wealth envy. He has been the most divisive president in our nation’s history as explained in Salena Zito’s article “Obama's Hyphenated America.” He is also governing against the will of the people, witness how he is refusing to enforce our laws and crammed that tax-laden ObamaCare down our throats while the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress during Obama’s first two years in office. Charles Krauthammer wrote a chi l l ing ar t ic le “The imper ia l presidency revisited” that exposes how Obama is functioning like a socialist dictator. Come November, we, the American people, will decide between two competing visions for our country. Will we remain a free and prosperous pro-market nation, governed by the people and for the people through our elected representatives? Or will we c o n t i n u e d o w n t h e p a t h o f totalitarianism, ruled by an all-p o w e r f u l f e d e r a l g o v e r n m e n t controlled by Obama, a tyrannical Marxist dictator?

On Friday night, there will be a social mixer with food, socializing, dancing, vendors and photographs. Attendees will also be able to cast their votes for the 2012 Hamilton Park Wall of Fame.

On Saturday morning, participants will embark on a guided tour of the Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet School. On Saturday evening, there will be a banquet at the Hyatt Hotel in Richardson, where Hamilton Park graduates Marjorie Bowens Craft and Donald Payton will give speeches.

On Sunday morning, guests will attend Hamilton Park First Baptist Church in Richardson at 10:30 a.m., where Dr. Gregory Foster is the senior pastor.

The Hamilton Park community includes many notables NFL players Andre Tillman, Aundra “Boomy” Thompson, Carl “Spider” Lockhart, Everson Walls, Faddie Tillman, Kevin Murphy, and Terrel Harris, a member of the Miami Heat, the 2012 NBA championship winners.

had a way of making everyone feel special. Her pleasant smile and vibrant personality were two of her many attributes.

She was born in Midland, Texas and when she was a young child, her family moved to Dallas.

Even at a young age, people remarked about her personality so it was no wonder that at 11 there she was on television on a weekly WFAA-TV children's program called Gunnysack.

An accomplished journalist, Paula began her broadcast career in Dallas working as an anchor and weather reporter for KDFW-TV (Channel 4) ,while studying broadcast journalism at Southern Methodist University.

After graduation in the mid-1980s, she stayed with the station, hosting her own talk show, Tuning in With Paula McClure.

It wasn’t long before she hit the national scene, leaving Dallas to work with Entertainment Tonight as a celebrity correspondent.

Paula co-hosted AM Los Angeles (KABC-TV, ABC) and Best of L.A. (KCOP-TV). She hosted the syndicated series Preview-The Best of The New, NBC Network's Daytime Dateline, Inside Video, and was news anchor for Later Today at Walt Disney World. She also hosted the video Entertaining with the Stars. Her love for and years of experience covering the health and beauty industry landed her a job as the national health product specialist for America's Health Network.

Paula was also a correspondent on the nationally-syndicated Lifestyles of The Rich and Famous, ABC's This Just In and Grudge Match, and was a co-host for the nationally syndicated series First Look and ESPN's Lifestyle Magazine. She's also been a consumer reporter for the popular Great Weekend series and a news reporter at KPNX-TV (NBC).

Paula's diverse experience includes hosting on Home Shopping Network, JC Penney TV Shopping Network, and infomercials from The Beverly Hills Diet to TV Music Classics. A former Kimball High School Homecoming Queen (first African American), she also served as a judge at the 1993 Miss USA Pageant.

Paula has been seen on the big screen with roles in Total Recall, Talent for the Games, and Transit. Television acting appearances include Lady Boss, Murphy Brown, The Gary Shandling Show and The Preppie Murder Case.

I can recall the excitement when it was announced that Paula was returning to Dallas in 1996 to co-host Good Morning Texas on WFAA-TV (Channel 80, where she was, as usual, a huge success. People loved Paula McClure. It was always a pleasure running into her.

She was committed to being involved in the community and she welcomed the opportunities she received from numerous invitations.

Her commitment was so deep that even after she arrived home from her honeymoon, which was also around the time of her birthday, she and her new husband, Gen. Hugh Robinson, joined me at the annual Don’t Believe the Hype Celebrity Bowl-a-thon.

Family was important to her. James and Fannie McClure did an excellent job with Paula. Oftentimes when I was in the area, I would see her father at work with her at WFAA-TV or accompanying her to one of the many events that she emceed or was a speaker at.

I also knew her proud mother and sister, who were always loving and supportive.

The popular Emmy award-winning television personality, motivational speaker, actress and fashion/beauty expert was in high demand, and with good reason. She was energetic, enthusiastic and engaging.

After leaving television, Paula opened the Paula McClure’s Mood Spa and introduced her signature line of aromatherapy products -- the Mood Spa System.

The Spa was just like Paula, first class! Upon entering the premises, you always felt as though you were special and valued. Always focused on attention to detail, Paula had done her research and she was determined to achieve success by providing quality service and products. When Paula received her diagnosis, she didn’t slow down. Brain cancer would not dampen her spirits, nor

would it keep her from continuing to be a joy in the lives of so many.

As she continued to live life to its fullest, Paula would talk about her cancer and she once attributed it to her heavy cell phone use, adding that her monthly cell phone bill was more than the car note for her stylish Mercedes!

Far be it for Paula to sulk and wallow in self-pity. She died as she lived and that is why she is still remembered and loved.

June 25, 2012 marked her 50th birthday. July 18 marked a decade since her death.

Paula left an indelible mark on the lives of so many.

Paula McClure’s life is definitely an example of all things noble and worthy of emulating.

Christian Chapel Temple of Faith CME Church sadly announced the passing of their Pastor Rev. Dr. Jerome E. McNeil, Jr. on Sunday, July 15, 2012. McNeil had just completed his Sunday morning sermon and collapsed in the sanctuary following the 10:45 am worship service. Dr. McNeil was the pastor of CCTOF, one of the oldest African American churches in Dallas County, for 21 years and under his leadership it grew to over 6,000 members, making it one of the largest churches in the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) denomination. Dr. McNeil was 63 years old. He was appointed by late Governor Ann Richards to serve on the Texas Marriage and Family Licensing Board for a three-year term. McNeil was hired as the highest ranking African American in Dallas County in 1981 when he named Assistant Director for the Dallas County Juvenile Department. In 1983, he became the first African American Family Court Investigator and Counselor for Dallas County. Dr. McNeil was one of the founding members of the Dallas African American Pastors Coalition, and Denominational Prayer Coordinator for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a Board member for the Phillips School of Theology of the ITC Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. McNeil served on the National Board of the One Church One School based out of Chicago, Illinois and was the Founder and Ex-Officio Officer of the Board of the Jordan Community Development Corporation of Dallas, Texas. He was a nationally recognized evangelist, counselor, teacher, workshop facilitator, speaker and author, who emphasized a biblical response to the current issues facing modern families and communities through his teaching and preaching ministries. Sylvia Woods, the "Queen of Soulfood," is the founder and owner of the world famous Sylvia's Restaurant, located in the historical village of Harlem, since 1962. Sylvia, young and determined received her beautician license at night while attending junior High School during the day. Sylvia opened the first farmhouse salon in her hometown of Hemingway, South Carolina. Sylvia, born and raised on her mother's South Carolina farm had dreams at a

very young age of marrying her childhood sweet heart Herbert, (whom she meet when she was eleven and he was twelve, while picking beans after school), and of one day trading in the cotton fields for the bright lights of New York City. In 1944, Sylvia married Herbert and started her journey towards a brighter future. Harlem called, and Sylvia answered, as she became a waitress at Johnson's luncheonette. In 1962, after several years of dedicated service to her employer, Mr. Johnson recognized Sylvia's

entrepreneurial spirit and sold her the luncheonette. Julia Pressley, Sylvia's mother, whom was a farmer and mid-wife, mortgaged her farm to loan her the money for the purchase. The then small luncheonette, consisted of a counter and a few booths, has now flourished into a family owned enterprise which consists of: Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem, Sylvia's Also, a full-service catering hall, Sylvia's Catering Corp., a nation-wide line of Sylvia's Food Products, two deliciously amazing cookbooks, and ATOC, Inc., a real estate firm. Sylvia's unwavering vision, hard work, and determination was shared by her late husband Herbert Woods, and was instilled in their four children, Van, Bedelia, Kenneth, and Crizette, who together with their children manage this family enterprise. To-date there are three generations of the Woods family working tirelessly, to ensure that their familyÕs business continues to make strides over the next 43 years. In keeping with the strong family values and support system that empowered Sylvia, in 2001, The Woods family created the Sylvia and Herbert Woods Scholarship Endowment Foundation. William RaspberryWilliam Raspberry was a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and the Knight Professor of the Practice of Journalism and Public Policy Studies at Duke University. As an urban affairs columnist for the Washington Post for nearly four decades, he wrote widely on education, crime, justice, drug abuse, and housing issues. William Raspberry's intellect and warmly personal writing style have attracted a legion of admiring readers to his commentary on social and political issues. In 1997, Raspberry was named one of the top 50 most influential journalists in the national press corps by Washingtonian. "Raspberry is among but a handful of journalists (with) the power to introduce new ideas and give them currency," the magazine said. Mr. Raspberry's column first ran in 1966 in the local section of The Washington Post. In 1971, his column was moved to the paper's op-ed page. Raspberry continued to comment on issues of education, crime, justice, drug abuse and housing, but added a national dimension. 'I Shall Not Be Moved' addresses this climate of NOW where the pimping of the masses has run overboard. The mind control of political dogma, the rejection and hiding of history, the fallacy of fame, injustice system, the radiation of reality TV, environmental injustices, the new whirl odor and its ignorance of real conditions and most of all the millennium attention span.

While I accept the change of times and ways I'm also aware that the peeps that swing the strings on the masses remain the same for years while invisibly manipulating tastes and flipping truth and redefining whatever they see, is the next carrot to capture the next drove of followers.

I'm not moved by bullsht. Below I excerpted the meaning of where 'I Shall Not Be Moved ' comes from a general internet search.

I Shall Not Be Moved is an African American spiritual. However, it has also gained popularity as a protest song as "We Shall Not Be Moved". "We Shall Not Be Moved" is a traditional American folk song whose original lyrics probably stretch back to the slave era, although there is no indication of when the song was written or who wrote it. It is a spiritual song that was adapted by the activists of the 1930s, with lyrics changed to "We Shall Not Be Moved," similarly to how "We Shall Overcome" took on the collective

voice in protest rather than its original singular voice.

"We Shall Not be Moved" lyrics are typical of traditional spiritual songs, "We Shall Not be Moved" consists of a series of verses wherein a single line changes for each verse. This folk song style is typical probably because it makes the song easy to remember and even easier for a song leader to sing with a group of people.

Also typical of many traditional folk songs, the lyrics have evolved through time to apply to the various causes about which the song has been sung. When the tune became an anthem of the labor movement, verses were adjusted to be appropriate to union organization. When the song was sung during the civil rights movement, verses were adjusted to reflect racial unity. Because of the song's structure, only one line per verse needed to be refashioned to be appropriate for the new context.

Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley recorded two of the most notable versions. Other great recordings of the song have come from the Harmonizing Four, the Jordanaires, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Ricky Van Shelton, and numerous others. Maya Angelou also titled a book of her poetry I Shall Not Be Moved as a tribute to the defiant American folk song and the movements it has inspired and accompanied.

In today s' climate I wrote my version of ' I Shall Not Be Moved' to vouch for a myriad of thoughts and feelings I've had these past couple of years since the success of our independent 2007 song 'Harder Than You Think'. I wanted to make a statement that RAP music can be powerful in its most simplistic form ...words, passion and the beat. Thus this version shares the title and conviction. The cooks in the kitchen of culture have poured too much sugar in the music resulting in too much salt in our wound in my opinion. Corporate dominance of recording ,radio ,television and thus culture has dictated the actions and movements of human beings after it first merely reflected. Even dictating the freedoms of the World Wide Web. The masses are being moved by the tricks of an industry rather than the skill of the musician. Its amazing that a beautiful culture born out of the people, black people as much as the Blues, and Jazz has been turned around to attack the same people in the name of entertainment.

There's a lot of guilty individuals out there who have sheepishly rode the ship of greed to lead to this american cultural demise of a great art form. Many of them remain invisible to the public they pimp. Others for the godless sake of just getting paid and flaunting this with fabricated exalted status orchestrates the method of the many

being screwed by so few. I maintain to the many that witness this song that my statement about RAP and Hip Hop is that its a craft NOT a hustle. Hustle is the language of a scavenger. I am NOT asking people to buy this record with their i tunes link. I tunes will give you a minute and a half of listening time to figure if you dig it. Just listen to the music AND the beat. I would hope this song gets 'HEARD' at least 25% of the time the world masses are forced to hear NGAS In Paris. WTF? The responsibility of those at the head of the art form is to path a high standard for the many to follow instead of tricking for the benefit of a few.

In Public Enemys 25th year the words I print, text and speak will be perhaps confrontational but not for selfish reason. 'I Shall NOT Be Moved' pays homage in its title to the forward movement of a people. Standing up for something instead of falling for anything is a beautiful thing....

Two minutes, 6 seconds. That is the climactic point in the song “Even Me” by up-and-coming Gospel sensation Anita Jarrell-Robertson. Though virtue springs forth from the very beginning of the song, the second minute and sixth second of that track sets the tone for a soon-to-be-released album that is certain to command rave reviews. Jarrell-Robertson says what the listener hears at that point in the song is her pouring out her soul before the Lord. The intensity of that moment was birthed from her deliverance from a dark place in her heart. “That’s the part where I accepted His healing and deliverance,” Jarrell-Robertson says. “I was literally sitting in my closet; that’s where I pray. I was in my master bedroom walk-in closet. I don’t want anybody to freak out about that,” a tickled Jarrell-Robertson says about her prayer closet being as much literal as it is metaphoric. “It is a walk-in closet, and I had my Bible, my journal, a pen and my ‘Steps’ book, a book that walks you through reconciliation with Christ.” What Jarrell-Robertson says next is quite revealing. “I was wrestling with a decision to cheat on my husband, and I wasn’t quite sure how to pull it off,” she says as she explains further how “Even Me” came about. “I just wanted to make him mad. It wasn’t that he was cheating or anything. It was trivial things,” she says, adding

that she had those thoughts even though there was never another man in the picture. “He didn’t wash the dishes enough; he didn’t help me enough with the kids; he didn’t date me enough; he didn’t talk to me the way that I wanted him to talk to me all the time. But he’s actually the most faithful man I’ve ever been with. “So, out of anger and hatred, I was going to cheat,” Jarrell-Robertson says. “What slowed my progress was I thought about my children and I didn’t know how to look them in the eye and tell them that I had cheated on their father. I really didn’t have a good reason. I knew that if I’d have made that choice to do that, I knew that I could potentially damage their destiny. I grew up with that kind of dysfunction as a preacher’s kid: Hearing one thing said and seeing something else done.” At that point, Jarrell-Robertson began to see that her inner-being had become as a land ravaged by drought. What was going on within her was much bigger than the “little things” that she didn’t like about her husband Jesse. “After about 20 minutes or so of just weeping in despair, just frustrated about the condition of my soul, I just asked God to help me,” she says. “And He gave me this song. I believe His answer to my prayer was this song. “This was the first time that I really internalized the message of the cross for myself versus making sure that everyone else on the planet got the Gospel, literally.” Jarrell-Robertson says the Spirit of the Lord showed her that she was living her

life inconsistent with the message she’d preached to others. “It’s like there was a different set of standards for me than for other people who didn’t know as much scripture as I did or who didn’t know how to pray as well as I did or who didn’t know as much Greek and Hebrew as I did, (who) didn’t know how to exegete as well,” she says. “But that was all a huge lie from the pit of hell. “I was in the closet with my little thoughts. So I came to this realization that I can come to the cross even with this, in whatever mess that I’m in, I can still come to the cross with it,” she says. “Basically, God was not surprised about the condition of my heart, the wickedness in my heart. I was, but He wasn’t. His blood was powerful enough to save and deliver ‘even me.’ Jarrell-Robertson says she was so inspired by Isaiah 44:3 that the passage

Little did I know, the song would end up on a CD somewhere.” And “Even Me” is by no means the only song on the Maxi single worth listening to. There are three other tracks, including “Future Generations,” “Never

Forget Your Maker” and “On My Way,” that are phenomenal. Jarrell-Robertson wrote, arranged and performed every song on the project. “Future Generations” and “Never Forget Your Maker” were written when the couple’s daughter Jessica, 6, was undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia. She is now healed. “On My Way” was written when Jarrell-Robertson’s father was dying in the hospital. The Lord Jesus let her know her father was on his way to heaven. LOS ANGELES - It only made sense that Roland Martin, host of Washington Watch and a social media aficionado, would use only technology to invite friends to a private dinner party at the Los Angeles home of actress Vanessa Bell Calloway. The "digital list" of attendees - culled from Martin's cell phone - included Elise Neal, Jesse Williams, Tracey Edmonds, Salli Richardson, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Tatyana Ali, Judge Greg Mathis, Robinne Lee, Dondre Whitfield, Tanika Ray, Chris Spencer, Jackee Harry, Bill Duke, Sonja Norwood, Erica Campbell of Mary Mary, Judge Kevin Ross and a host of entertainment and media executives.

"I grew up in Houston where my family would throw get-togethers just for the fun of it, so this party is what I like to do when I come out to the west coast; I simply do not have enough time to do lunch with everybody," said Martin. "There's no rhyme or reason to it. I simply sent out a text message on Thursday and here we are!" Guests dined on a gourmet meal prepared completely by Calloway. The menu featured slow roasted chicken, "Killer Shrimp" in spicy champagne and garlic sauce, Korean BBQ, fried catfish, coconut rice, potato salad, grilled mixed

veggies, and a mixed greens salad with candied pecans and goat cheese in a raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Martin thanked Calloway who was gracious enough to open her home and host the party. "I enjoy hosting people and cooking for family and friends," said Calloway. "I'm getting a chance to meet some new people tonight. It has been my pleasure to help Roland celebrate community and fellowship."

DNA study looking for participants

Researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center are interested in learning about how genetics contribute to heart disease and other related chronic illnesses. The BioBank is a DNA repository that we are building to aid in that research. “We are currently seeking 10,000 African Americans and 10,000 Hispanics to complete one, short study visit where they will be asked to complete a health survey and provide a small blood sample (5 teaspoons). All participants will receive a free report of their blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels as well as a $25 Target gift card.”

Participating in the BioBank Study is a great opportunity to contribute to ground breaking research. It is also a chance to learn about one’s health status. We hope that the knowledge gained from this research study will assist with the development of new therapies and strategies to prevent and treat such illnesses.

Parkland reorganizes senior leadership team around transformationNew leadership group to drive

change throughout hospital system

DALLAS – Parkland Health & Hospital System announced, today, a reorganization of its senior leadership team. The new leaders have been given a mandate to focus on a rapid and sustainable turnaround at Parkland.

“We’re entering a new phase in our corrective action plan,” said Debbie Branson, Chair of the Parkland Board of Managers. “The emphasis must be on ensuring the changes we’ve made in our operations become permanently woven into the Parkland culture. This group of leaders has the talent and turnaround experience to get that done.”

“I sincerely appreciate the effort every employee at Parkland continues to put forth to complete our corrective action plan. The Board has now assembled a team with proven track records when it comes to turning around health care institutions to lead the ongoing process. I look forward to working with them in this important transition period,” said Parkland’s interim CEO Thomas Royer, MD.

The new Parkland leadership team includes:

• Ron Laxton, RN, Interim Chief Operating Officer for Hospital Operations– Laxton is currently serving

as Chief Implementation Officer (CIMO) under the Systems Improvement Agreement with CMS. He will now oversee Parkland’s acute care hospital operations. This position was previously vacant. Laxton previously served as CEO of Renown Regional Medical Center & Children’s Hospital—an 800 bed facility in Reno, Nevada. He has led turnaround efforts for health care institutions in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Nevada.

• Sharon Phillips, RN, Interim Chief Operating Officer for Ambulatory Care & Behavioral Health Services – Phillips is serving as the executive in charge of off campus operations. She has an extensive background in turning around health care operations, as evidenced by those services now provided in the adult and juvenile Dallas County Jail system. Phillips spearheaded the startup of Parkland’s Medicaid Managed Care operations. In addition, she has had several successful personal entrepreneurial endeavors.

• Ted Shaw, CPA, FHFMA, Interim Chief Financial Officer – Shaw has served as CFO and CEO at both public and private health care organizations. He has turned around several large health care systems including four academic medical centers. Shaw will replace John Dragovits, who recently announced his intention to leave Parkland to join a new health care venture in Dallas as its COO.

• Mary Eagen, RN, Chief Nursing Officer. Eagen has been serving in this role for the past six months, leading the restructuring of the Parkland nursing organization. Eagen, who is a seasoned Chief Nursing Officer, contributed to the successfully turnaround of two Texas regions within the CHRISTUS Health System.

• Christopher Madden, MD, Interim Chief Medical Officer – Dr. Madden, a neurosurgeon at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, has been practicing at Parkland since 2003. Dr. Madden is an Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at UT Southwestern. He is a nationally recognized surgeon, teacher and author in the field of neurosurgery. In addition to his clinical and teaching practice, since December Dr. Madden has been serving as UT Southwestern’s Assistant Vice President for Parkland Health & Hospital System Affairs. Dr. Madden has agreed to serve as Parkland’s Chief Medical Officer until a permanent Chief Medical Officer is recruited. Dr. Madden will be replacing Dr. John Jay Shannon, who recently announced his intention to resign as CMO.

“The Board of Managers is unanimous in its support for this new leadership team. Ron Laxton, Ted Shaw and Mary Eagen have a track record of success turning around organizations in crisis and Dr. Madden has emerged as an instrumental player leading change on the UT Southwestern side of the Parkland equation,” Branson added. “Transformational change of Parkland is not an option, it’s a necessity and we believe this team is qualified to bring it about.”

"ALMOST A SENIOR" BY BRENDA FAYE

High school is an unforgettable experience. The challenges we face and decisions we make during those delicate teen years can shape our lives forever. It is an exciting, adventurous time of life. Brenda Faye Collie takes us back to that time period in her debut novel, Almost A Senior.

The main character, Loresha, is a junior at Major Horris High School in Harlem. She has just been elected as the student body president, and is

full of hope and promise. She is a good student with a bright future ahead of her. She is very driven to make improvements in her school. Soon after the election, she begins to make changes. Even though some of the changes are unpopular, she shows

a strong conviction and determination to be a good leader.

Loresha faces many challenges. She is the product of a single-parent home. Her mother, affectionately referred to as "Mama Police," is a strong black woman. Mama Police has done her best to take care of her children and set a proper example for them. Loreshas brother, Jason has had his own struggles that have affected the whole family. The family dynamic is one that many can relate to.

Peer pressure is common during the teen years. Peers can exert a very powerful influence - either good or bad. Loresha starts dating one of the popular boys on the basketball team. He introduces her to a new group of people and a new set of standards. She chooses to experiment and she quickly finds out that people are not always who they seem to be. However, she learns to recognize and appreciate loyal friends.

In this coming of age novel, we follow the main character through various ups and downs. Dating, betrayal, drugs and alcohol are just a few of the tests Loresha encounters. Although she makes mistakes along the way, she comes out successfully.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was easy-to-read and very entertaining. It is great for summer reading while lying on the beach or sitting on a park bench. Many teens and young adults can relate to the characters and situations in this story. Brenda Faye Collie is a wonderful storyteller.

She is an award winning playwright and I am confident that she will continue as a successful author for many years. I look forward to her next book.

The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation and The Passport Project have partnered to help 50 "Afripolitans" make a voyage to West Africa by donating the cost of a passport to a college-aged young person. Afripolitans as defined by the Sullivan Foundation are leaders under age 40 who seek to make dynamic change in the world, which includes defining Africa in terms beyond foreign humanitarian aid. The trip is a part of the 9th Leon H. Sullivan Summit being held August 20-24 in Equatorial Guinea.According to the World Bank, 200 million people in Africa are between the ages of 15-24. "We really wanted an opportunity to engage young people in the exciting things happening on the continent and this partnership helps us bridge that gap and focus on the next generation of leaders," says Hope Sullivan Masters, CEO of the Sullivan Foundation and daughter of the late Rev. Leon H. Sullivan. Rev. Sullivan, famous for his Sullivan Principles around human rights and corporate responsibility, began the summits as a way to open dialogue and investment

between African Americans and Africa. The goals of the summit focus on inclusive growth and self-sufficiency. This year's summit is chaired by former President of Ghana, the Hon. John A. Kufuor and will be attended by U.S. Government officials and many Heads of State and government officials from Africa and Latin America and corporate entities from the energy, telecoms, mining, finance, and agriculture industries."This partnership aligns with what we are doing with Passport Project - giving young people the keys they need to unlock the door to the world and realize their full potentials," says Kenji Summers, Founder of Passport Project.
