Here is a sparkling collection of Crown jewels--from amusing tales that humanize their subjects to dramatic stories of

martyrdoms, palace intrigues, and bloody battles. Elizabeth Longford, intimate of the royal family and biographer of Victoria

and Elizabeth II, has assembled the best anecdotes ever written and reported abut the kings and queens of England, across the

full range of Britain's history from the first century A.D. to the present day.

Scholars and versifiers, lawgivers and saints crowd the pages alongside soldiers, scallywags, and imbeciles, and never have

these distant figures been brought more vividly to life than in this splendid anthology. We read of Alfred's burnt cakes, Cnut and

the wolves, Henry VIII and his six wives, George III resigning himself to American independence, Edward VII's gambling habits,

and much more. There are samplings of royal wit (as when James I said of John Donne's poetry: Dr Donne's verses are like the

peace of God; they pass all understanding."), of royal modesty (as in Elizabeth II's explanation of why she wore no crown at the

musician Robert Mayer's 100th birthday party: "I thought it was Sir Robert's night, not mine."), and of royal certitude (as in

Victoria's comment during a dark moment of the Boer War: "Please understand that there is no one depressed this house; we

are not interested in the possibilities of defeat; they do not exist.")

The Countess of Longford's helpful commentary clarifies the complexities of royal genealogy and adds a sharp and often

humorous perspective to bygone events. Her sources range from the earliest medieval chroniclers to biographers and historians

of today, from dispassionate descriptions to intimate and revealing accounts from the letters and journals of the monarchs

themselves. The result is truly a historical feast fit for a king.

In the last half-millennium, as the noted cultural critic and historian Jacques Barzun observes, great revolutionshave swept the Western world. Each has brought profound change--for instance, the remaking of thecommercial and social worlds wrought by the rise of Protestantism and by the decline of hereditary

monarchies. And each, Barzun hints, is too little studied or appreciated today, in a time he does not hesitate tolabel as decadent. To leaf through Barzun's sweeping, densely detailed but lightly written survey of the last 500

years is to ride a whirlwind of world-changing events. Barzun ponders, for instance, the tumultuous politicalclimate of Renaissance Italy, which yielded mayhem and chaos, but also the work of Michelangelo and

Leonardo--and, he adds, the scientific foundations for today's consumer culture of boom boxes androllerblades. He considers the 16th-century varieties of religious experimentation that arose in the wake of

Martin Luther's 95 theses, some of which led to the repression of individual personality, others of which mighteasily have come from the "Me Decade." Along the way, he offers a miniature history of the detective novel,

defends Surrealism from its detractors, and derides the rise of professional sports, packing in a wealth oflearned and often barbed asides.

Never shy of controversy, Barzun writes from a generally conservative position; he insists on the importance ofmoral values, celebrates the historical contributions of Christopher Columbus, and twits the academic

practitioners of political correctness. Whether accepting of those views or not, even the most casual reader willfind much that is new or little-explored in this attractive venture into cultural history. --Gregory McNamee

Literary Theoryhas the kind of racy readability that one associates more often with English critics who have set their facesresolutely against theory ... Its not just a brilliant polemical essay, its also a remarkable feat of condensation, explication, andsynthesis ... Stimulating and entertaining.Sunday Times

This concise and lucid volume offers a satisfying survey of all the major theories, from structuralism in the 1960s todeconstruction today, that have made academic criticism both intriguing and offputting to the outsider.New York Times Book Review

    Description

A quarter of a century on from its original publication, Literary Theory: An Introduction still conjures the subversion, excitementand exoticism that characterized theory through the 1960s and 70s, when it posed an unprecedented challenge to the literaryestablishment. Eagleton has added a new preface to this anniversary edition to address more recent developments in literarystudies, including what he describes as the growth of a kind of antitheory, and the idea that literary theory has beeninstitutionalized. Insightful and enlightening, Literary Theory: An Introduction remains the essential guide to the field.

Duraid, is not so lucky. This husband-and-wife archaeological team was immersed in

unraveling the secrets of the "seventh scroll." Written in a type of shorthand, the scroll

dates back to the Hyksos invasion of Egypt and was recently discovered in the tomb ofQueen Lostris, whose story is told in Smith's River God (St. Martin's, 1994). Grieving over

the loss of her husband, Royan engages Sir Nicholas Quenton-Harper, a wealthy English

collector, to assist her in completing the work she and Duraid had begun by locating the

tomb of Pharaoh Mamose the Eighth, husband of Lostris. Through collective teamwork,

Royan and Nicholas travel to Ethiopia, at great peril to themselves, as they try to uncover a

4000-year-old secret. This well-crafted novel is full of adventure, tension, and intrigue.

Lee describes the rhythms of village life...so every smell and sensationof his Gloucestershire childhood comes alive

The England of this text is one of silence, of hard work and necessarypatience, of white roads, rutted by hooves and cartwheels, andinnocent of oil and petrol. It is the rich, sensuous world of childhoodand youth in a remote Cotswold village, a world that has mostlyvanished.

The Village by the Sea is set in a small village called Thul in Western India(near Bombay) and focuses on a family trying to makeends meet. The main protagonists are Lila, the eldest child who is 13 years old, and her 12-year-old brother Hari.

They also have two younger sisters, Bela and Kamal. They live with their mother, who has been chronically ill and is bed-ridden.Their father is an alcoholic, which forces Hari and Lila to manage the family. There is much stress on them due to the constantdemand of meeting the need of money. Although their father was earning money, he used to spend it to buy alcoholic materials.

With two younger sisters to take care of, life for Lila and Hari is too hard. Hari decides that he has had enough and leaves forBombay to find work. Lila is left alone to take care of her family, and struggles to do so. Help comes from an unexpected source, the rich De Silvas who have a bunglow or summerhouse- Mon Repos next to their hut.

Meanwhile, Hari is new in the great city of Bombay and all alone. A kind restaurant proprietor, Jagu, takes pity on him and

welcomes him to work in his restaurant. There, Hari builds a strong friendship with Mr. Panwallah, the lovable watch repairerwhose shop is just beside Jagus. Through his experience with Mr. Panwallah and Jagu and the chain of events that take place inBombay, Hari realizes that he could actually make a career as a watchmaker.

Meanwhile, Lila, Bela and Kamal admit their sick mother in town hospital through the help of the De Silvas. Their father turns overa new leaf, and accompanies their mother throughout her 7-month treatment. Then, when Hari returns home the environment ofhis home is totally changed.

Anita Desai has explicitly described in her very own style of writing, how Hari in the dilapidated conditions of the Sri KrishnaEating House finds warmth and affection through Mr Panwallah-owner and watch mender of the Ding-Dong watch shop. MrPanwallah instills confidence in Hari and comforts him when he is terribly home sick. He even gives Hari a vivid and inspiringfuture and teaches him watch mending. This shows that even in one of the busiest, rickety and ramshackle cities such as Bombay

there is still hope, love and affection.
