We love Manchester in the summer. Long summer days. Long cold drinks. Barbecues. Picnics. Open air concerts. Rain.

The only bad thing about summer is the 12 week gap between the Champions League Final and the Community Shield when there’s no football.

But not this year. Just in case you hadn’t heard, the World Cup starts on June 12. Yay!

A feast of football - 64 matches in 32 days finishing on July 13 when England play someone else in the final. Or maybe not.

Just enough time for a quick holiday and back in time for the new domestic football season.

So get into the World Cup spirit. Be more Brazilian. Learn samba. Learn a few words of Portuguese. Olá (Hi). Boa noite (Good night). Saúde (Cheers). Gooooooooooooooooool do Brasil! (Brazil have scored). Go and play volleyball on Blackpool beach wearing a thong.

On second thoughts, stay in Manchester and watch the football in one of the many venues showing all the games. But make the most of it. Because the only bad thing about the World Cup is it makes the summer go far too quickly.

Valencia is Ecuador’s captain and a key player.

United fans will be keeping a close eye on the Netherlands not just because of van Persie but because of the new manager.

Nani is the sole Manchester player in the Portugal squad but United fans will probably be more interested in a certain former player who they still hold in high esteem.

One of several United players who will be keen to impress the new boss after a disappointing season. Will be in the starting line-up.

Although Spain are likely to have the biggest contingent of Manchester players (apart from England), such is the strength of their squad that it’s unlikely any of them will start. In fact, it’s so strong, particularly in midfield, that one or two of them (probably Mata and Negredo) may not even make the final 23. As third choice keeper, De Gea is the least likely to play.

So who will we be supporting? We reckon United fans will be rooting for Netherlands, City fans will be cheering Argentina and that neither set of fans will be too upset if Belgium and Spain do well, too.

IVORY COAST

Toure 82 caps 16 goals

Toure has had his best season for City, scoring 24 goals and finishing third in the PFA Player of the Year awards. With Drogba one of Ivory’s Coast’s key players.

MEXICO

Chicharito 58 caps 35 goals

Despite becoming increasingly peripheral at United, Chicharito is one of Mexico’s key players and with 35 goals in 58 games is as prolific for his country as he was for United in his first season at Old Trafford. For goals, add a little Mexican.

STEP 1

Let’s start by asking, who isn’t going to win the World Cup?

If the history of the World Cup teaches us anything, it’s that some countries are just not going to win the it.

When was the last time one of the outsiders won the World Cup? Answer: never.

(Yes, we know Denmark and Greece have won the Euros. But that was the Euros. This is the World Cup). The competition has been held 19 times but only eight countries have ever won it.

We all know who the no hopers are. They’re countries which don’t produce many world class footballers , either because their populations are small or they don’t have a footballing history.

Uruguay are the exception to the rule. Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America and has a population of only 3.4 million-less than

Panama, Bosnia and Ireland -yet they have won the World Cup twice (and the the Copa América a record 15 times). They are serial overachievers and consistently punch above their weight. (The next smallest country to have won the World Cup is Argentina with a population of 43 million.)

Most of the no hopers will be eliminated at the group stage. That’s what the group stage is for. To get rid of the weaker teams. Oh, and to enable FIFA to make more money from ticket sales.

If any of them do manage to get out of the groups, one or two may make it through the first knockout stage before taking a beating by one of the favourites in the quarter finals.

So who are the teams who won’t win the World Cup? We all know who they are so let’s name names.

Algeria, Australia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador, Greece, Honduras, Iran, Japan, Mexico, South Korea and USA.

That leaves 19 countries which could win the World Cup-Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Cameroon, Ghana, Columbia, England, France, Germany, Italy, Ivory Coast, Netherlands, Nigeria, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and Uruguay. What does it take to win the World Cup? Well, first of all you need some top players. And by top players we mean top top players. So we decided to find out which countries have got the most top top players in their preliminary squads. We consulted the Guardian’s top 100 footballers in the world for 2013. This is what we found.

Spain have 13, Germany 9, Brazil 8, Belgium 6, France 6, Italy 6, Argentina 6. By the way, Carlos Tevez is ranked 46 in the Guardian list but sadly wasn’t selected for the Argentine squad and will be taking his family to Disneyland instead. But there’s no point having ten of the world’s best players if nine of them are forwards. And as any football fan knows, it’s not always the team with the best players which wins. A good team needs a good coach.

So who are the best coaches at Brazil 2014? According to our research, the coaches with the best career records (games won as a percentage of games played) are as follows:

Del Bosque (Spain) 61%, Van Gaal (Netherlands (61%), Klinsmann (USA) 59%, Sabella (Argentina) 59%, Lamouchi (Ivory Coast ) 58%, Hitzfeld (Switzerland) 58%, Bento (Portugal) 58%, Sampaoli (Chile) 58% and Capello (Russia) 56%.We also looked at which coaches have the best record in their current jobs as coaches of their national teams. They are Del Bosque 81%, Scolari (Brazil) 76%, Löw (Germany) 69%, Herrera (Mexico) 66%, Appiah (Ghana) 64%, Pekerman (Colombia) 62%, Halihodzic (Algeria) 61%, Klinsmann 60%, Sabella 59% and Capello 59%.

Three names appear on both lists-Del Bosque, Sabella and Klinsmann. Now, it’s all very well being a good coach but without world class players you’re not going to win the World Cup.

So for that reason, we’ll put Spain and Argentina on our shortlist but can’t consider Jurgen Klinsmann’s USA. Two of the names on one list - Löw and Scolari - are coaches of countries with lots of top top players so we’ll add their countries to our shortlist. So we are left with four teams which have lots of top top players and a top coach-Argentina, Brazil, Spain and Germany.

STEP 4

How do we work out which of the four teams on our shortlist is going to win the World Cup? Well, we need to take into account imponderables such as injury, loss of form, luck and the extent to which home advantage will benefit the South American teams, particularly Brazil. And imponderables are, by definition, difficult or impossible to estimate or assess. Plus, it’s not always the best teams that win in a knockout competition.

So we put the names of the four countries into a hat and drew them out in reverse order.

As inspirational for England as he was for United, Robbo played in three World Cup finals but just eight games because of injury. Scored after 27 seconds in his first game against France.

David Beckham1998 2002 2006

Played 13 games in three World Cups (two whilst a United player), ten as captain. The first English player to score in three World Cup finals.

Vilified and abused after his red card against Argentina in 1998, he gained revenge when he scored the penalty which eliminated them from the 2002 finals.

A ruptured Achilles tendon ruled him out of selection for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Nobby Stiles1966 1970

A key member of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team, Nobby is remembered as much for his post-match jig as his outstanding performances as a hard tackling ball winner. The only Manchester lad to win the World Cup.

Walter Winterbottom1950 1954 1958 1962

Oldham-born former United centre half. The father of modern English football and the only man to coach England at four World Cup finals.

Norman Whiteside 1982 1986

On 17th June 1982, two months after making his debut for United, Norman Whiteside became the youngest footballer to play in a World Cup finals at the age of just 17 years 1 month 10 days-a record which still stands. Most lads are still playing in the park with their mates at that age.

Harry Gregg1958

Hero of Munich who was voted best goalkeeper of the 1958 World Cup Finals just four months later.

Jimmy Murphy1958

United coach and assistant manager who took Wales to their only appearance at a World Cup finals where they were undefeated before losing narrowly to eventual winners Brazil in the quarter final.

The National Football Museum moved to Manchester from Preston in July 2012. It celebrates the history of the beautiful game and has quickly become one of Manchester’s most popular attractions. At any one time, around 2,500 items from the museum’s collections are on display.These are our favourite items from its World Cup collection.

AT THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL MUSEUM

THE LIPTON TROPHY REPLICA

The Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy was the first attempt at organising a global football competition and is therefore considered to be the first ever World Cup. It was first held in Turin in 1909 and was won by West Auckland, a team of miners representing England. Two years later, they retained the trophy when they beat Juventus 6-1, becoming the only team to ever win it. The original trophy was stolen from West Auckland Working Men’s Club in January 1994 and has never been recovered.

MARADONA’S HAND OF GOD SHIRT

The shirt worn by Maradona when he scored one of football’s most controversial goals against England in the quarter final of the 1986 World Cup Final. It is, of course, also the shirt in which he scored the goal of the century just six minutes later.

BALLS FROM THE FIRST EVER WORLD CUP FINAL

Uruguay and Argentina couldn’t agree on who should provide the match ball for the first ever World Cup final in 1930. FIFA intervened and decreed that Argentina should provide the ball for the first half and the Uruguayans for the second.

Bobby Charlton was England’s outstanding player in the 1966 World Cup.

Collyhurst kid Nobby was one of the heroes of England’s 1966 World Cup triumph.

JULES RIMET TROPHY REPLICA

The Jules Rimet Trophy was the original trophy awarded to the winners of the World Cup. Brazil got to keep the trophy when they won it for the third time in 1970. The original was also won by Uruguay (twice), Italy (twice), West Germany and England. It was stolen whilst on display before the 1966 tournament and found by a dog called Pickles.

PELE’S SHIRT FROM THE 1958 WORLD CUP FINAL

In 1958, Pelè became the youngest footballer to play in a World Cup Final at the age of 17 years and 249 days.. He scored his first goal in the 1-0 quarter -final win over Wales, a hat-trick in the semi-final against France and two more in the final against hosts Sweden.

BALL FROM THE 1966 WORLD CUP FINAL

The tradition in British football is that the scorer of a hat-trick keeps the ball at the end of the match. Geoff Hurst didn’t claim the ball at the end of the 1966 World Cup Final and it was taken by Helmut Haller, scorer of West Germany’s first goal. Haller returned the distinctive orange ball following a campaign by the tabloid press ahead of Euro 96 in England.

CRISTIANO RONALDO

They say the only way is down when you leave United. Tell that to Ronaldo.

MAICON

Another one season wonder, Maicon was bought from Inter Milan after an embarrassing performance against Gareth Bale in the Champions League from which it seemed he never recovered. Like a fish out of water in the Premership; struggled with injury and struggled to get a place on the bench, let alone in the first team.

GEORGIOS SAMARAS

Signed by Stuart Pearce and sold by Sven-Göran Eriksson two years later, Georgios Samaras flattered to deceive and after some disappointing performances was moved on, having scored eight goals in 58 appearances. Has been frustrating Celtic fans since 2008. Eight goals in 71 appearances for Greece.

NIGEL DE JONG

Three and a half years at the Etihad but will always be best remembered for that challenge on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 final. Now a stalwart of AC Milan’s midfield but no longer guaranteed a place in Netherlands’ starting line-up. Then again, no one is, apart from van Persie and Robben.

MARIO BALOTELLI

Greater Manchester’s former ambassador for firework safety scored 20 goals in 54 appearances in two and a half years for City An enigma of a player who delighted and frustrated in equal measure, he was thought to have blown the Premiership title in 2012 when he was sent off at Arsenal but went from zero to hero in the final game of the season against QPR when he flicked out a leg which led to Sergio Aguero’s last gasp winner. A lethal penalty taker. Balotelli became the first black player to play for Italy in a major tournament. Now Italy’s regular first choice striker. Balotelli famously said he found living in Manchester depressing. Count yourself lucky you weren’t playing for Aston Villa, Mario.

DIEGO FORLAN

Another exception to the rule. Despite scoring some spectacular goals, mainly from the bench, Diego was a chronic underachiever for United scoring just 17 times in 98 appearances but is still celebrated for his two goals at Anfield in 2002. Pioneer of the alice band and shirt off celebration, he is fondly remembered for the occasion on which he came off the bench against Southampton at Old Trafford and couldn’t get his shirt back on after scoring a late winner. Became a prolific goalscorer for Villarreal and Athletico Madrid and is now Uruguay’s most capped footballer with 36 goals in 107 appearances Won the Golden Ball for best player at the 2010 finals. Past his prime but likely to play some part in the tournament.

GERARD PIQUE

Another exception to the rule. Pique spent three seasons at Old Trafford (including a period on loan at Zaragoza) as understudy to Ferdinand and Vidic but returned to Barcelona when his first team chances became even more limited with the emergence of Jonny Evans as a promising central defender. Has developed into an accomplished defender who has won every honour for club and country.

PAUL POGBA

Another exception to the rule. Former academy star who should have been playing in United’s midfield for years to come but was allowed to leave after failing to agree a new contract. Pogba made just seven substitute appearances for United before heading to Juventus in 2012 for whom he has scored 14 goals in 86 appearances. Now rated the best under-21 player in Europe and a regular for France. Definitely one to watch in Brazil.

JEROME BOATENG

One of Roberto Mancini’s first signings and promptly played out of position at full back, Boateng never settled and was moved on to Bayern Munich after just one season. The only player thought to have aggravated a knee injury in a collision with a drinks trolley on a plane.

JO

Spent an underwhelming three years at the Etihad during which he scored six goals in 41 appearances and was on loan more often than a payday lender’s cash. Most City fans will be surprised that he has even made the Brazil squad.

GUISEPPE ROSSI

Another promising United academy player and Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year in 2004/5 who was allowed to leave the club after a handful of appearances. His career blossomed after moving to Villareal in 2007 as a replacement for Forlan. Now leading scorer in Serie A where he plays for Fiorentina. Suffered cruciate ligament injury In January but will be ready for the tournament.

Comprehensively outpaced to the ball by Mesut Özil who supplied the killer pass for Thomas Müller to score Germany’s fourth goal. It didn’t make much difference to the result. England were already well beaten.

Is there anything you don´t like about Manchester? It’s quite obvious that I have to say, the weather. The accent is so hard to understand when

you first arrive, but now I love to speak Mancunian!

What do you miss most about Spain? Family of course, sometimes it is hard being away. And spend more time outside in the sun having tapas.

Do you support a Spanish football team? If so, which one? Yes. Real Madrid.

Do you support a Brazilian football team? Yes, I support Flamengo. That’s the team Zico used to play for. Flamengo beat Liverpool 3-0 in the Clubs World Championship final in 1981 and is the most popular club in Brazil.

Where will you be watching the World Cup? Here in England and from July I will be in Brazil to hopefully watch a Brazilian or even an English game.

Who is your favourite Brazilian player? My favourite Brazilian player is Romario. I have never seen anyone as clinical in the area as him.

How far do you think Brazil will get in the World Cup? I strongly believe Brazil will go all the way to the final and win it.

How far do you think Netherlands will get in the World Cup? Well, as always, the Dutch are a bit of a pessimistic breed. However, as the World Cup four years ago proved, dreams can nearly come true.


amba brings a bit of Brazilian sunshine to Manchester

Manchester School of Samba was founded by Tony Watts in March 1995. It’s a noisy, fun- filled celebration of the joys of being alive using dance, percussion, costume and floats to perform in the various styles of Brazilian carnival. They’ve played Notting Hill Carnival and Coburg Samba Festival, the biggest samba event in Europe, but perform mainly at local festivals in north west England. Rehearsals are at Sacred Trinity Church, Chapel Street, Salford on Wednesdays at 7p.m. Drums are provided. If you’d like to get involved, just turn up, pay your entrance fee (£5/4.50) and join in. You can’t beat a good sausage. The Splendid Sausage Company is an intriguing hybrid of the very best of British sausages and American hot dog culture.
