'1111e Stol'Y of the Play"Everyone should know nowadays the unimportance of the

photographic in art: That truth, life or reality is an organic thingwhkh the poetic imagination can represent or suggest, in essence, only through transformation, throllgh changing into other formsthan those which merely present i1appearance. These remarks arenot meant as a preface only to this particular play. They have to dowith a conception of a new, plastic theater which must take theplace of the exhausted theater of realistic conventions if the theateris to resume vitality as a part of our culture,"

Thus does Tennessee \Villiams explain the format of "TheGlass :Menagerie," his «memory play." In many respects, it is themost unusual drama ever presente,! by Hcd Mask Players.

The story is of four people and how their lives impinge oneupon another. It is told by Tom Witigfield, the son ... and the audi-ence sees through his eyes as he roereates a memory of his family. He sets the mood early with this observation:

«, .. I am the opposite of thJ stage magician. He gives youillusion that has the appearance 01 truth. I give you truth in thepleasant disguise of illusion .... B~ing a memory play, it is dimlylighted, it is sentimental, it is not r~alistic

We think you will agree that Ithis is thc American theater atits finest.-RB.W. I
