ß What is unquestionably one of • the most significant 'books to come out of V½orld W• II, "The Turn of the Tide," by Sir Arthur Bryant, was pu,blishcd 'bY Double- day on May 20.

Based upon the intimate war diaries of Fie].d Marsl:.all Viscount Alanbrooke, Chief of the British General Sh'.ff, "The Turn of the Tide" is the most teadabble and most candid of a:l war" memoirs.

.

Lord Alan•)rooke wa• the man who saved the British Army at .Dunkirk, commanded the defense of the British Isles _agains_t the exp•ct•.d inva•i(•n, and from 1951

ß until the end of the war-was the •operational head of the British '•rrn¾.

It "was .Alanbrooke 'who con- ,c•eived the strategy tha't brought 'abOut the-'turn .of the tide and it •'was he'who played a leading role in inducing the American chiefs to adopt this strategy. Through-

..

out the war he Was seldom out of touch w. ith.Winst0n' Churchill for more than six hours at a'..time, ß and the volume-contains a unique :firs.t•hand.•..portrait . Of Britain's in- , d0.minatable 'P'rime • Minister. -" Field Marsh•ll'Alanbrooke ac-

Stalin. He was. in frequent con- tact with the Allied leaders--Ei- senhower, Marshall, King, De- Gaulle, Stimson, Hopkins, Mont- batten, and his estimate of their capabilities.

The unique personal quality of "The Turn of the Tide" derives from the fact that the diaries were written by Britain's top. :gen- eral for his wife. Sir ArthurBry-

' ant, the eminent British histor- ian, has added perspective and comment to make a unified his-

'•- tory of the war from its outbreak _

A Captain's House In Wiscasset, Maine :: ISCASSET, Maine, is known for its many fine old houses " erected in the early nineteenth century. The town's

wealth came from merchants and ship-owners who sent their cargoes into European ports under our neutral flag during the Napoleonic Wars. It is claimed that the French explored this coast in 1605 and sailed up the river to what is now Wiscasset.

But they learned that George Waymouth, an.. Englishman, had planted the Cross of St. George there a few weeks ear- lier and, wisely, did not return. The town was incorporated in 1760, after a century and a half ..

handsome three-story house of Captain Nichels. A beautiful arch separates the entrance hall and the stair

hall. The fluted pilasters are unique, and their fine detail and intricate carving place them among the best examples created at that time. It's said that ten years were required to build this house, which is filled with excellent design and workmanship.

The graceful stair starts with an unusually large voluted tread. The customary newel post is absent here.

The exterior of the house is

dignified. The front entrance contains a fine fanlight and side lights. There is a small en- trance porch supported by four columns whose capitals are carved with ascanthus leaf motives. Above this on the sec-

ond floor is a large well-scaled Palladian window. In the third

floor is placed an unusual fan window.

The house is on.a small rise, and has a balustered fence

more like the English stone ones than our American Fed- eral.

"One. of the most Persistent issues of modern times is the controversy over defense organization at the seat of gov-

ing from the need to eo. ordinate ground, air and naval forces.. At his greatest battle his army numbered but 36,000 men--about the size oœ two present-day divisions. As war became more and

more complex, Colonel Hittle finds, the single chief of staff or single commander system failed to keep pace. Indeed, he

,

believes that the ultimate defeat of Na-

poleon, another supreme commander with absolute power, was due to that failure, and that the emperor "did not comprehend sea power or naval pro,b- lems."

Colonel Hittle presents many convinc- ing arguments against the single chief system, and in favor of the JCS system we now have. To quote him 6nce more, "The JVS system assures full develop- rnent of land, sea and air warfare doc- trines and material, because no one serving can dominate another. All are partners in national security. The sin- gle chief of staff permits one-man and one-service control of the armed forces

and leads to stifling of progress and service initiative."

Where. Discipline Is Needed

Puppies invariably make a mess of homes--until they are sternly disci- plined and taught to be clean and decent members of the family.

One wishes that a similar discipline could be imposed on the "litterbugs" who strew discarded paper, beer cans, empty bottles and all manner of other% rubbish and dirt along the highways, in recreation areas, and in beauty spots throughout the nation.

The litterbugs have the crude and manners of untrained puppie.s•without any o.f the puppies' excuses.

Since November 12, 1951, more than 65 million passengers have traveled a total of nearly 40 billion miles .i n Pull- man cars without suffering .a fatality. In the same period more than 190,000 people have died in highway accidents.

A SHORT, SHORT STORY COMPLETE ON THIS PAGE

This. js a story of 1916, the' year that the schools.' did not open on schedule, the year that plague descended and caught us as ter- rified and defenseless as though we were dwellers in a medieval city faced with a new and dreadful scourge.

I was a child in 1916. My friends and I did-not understand. We asked questions but the•grownups were as bewildered and fright- eneCl as ourselves. "It,s infantile paralysis," they told us. "It kills you .or else it leaves you crippler forever. Don't go too close to anybody and don't touch anything that a strange child has handled."

;Fear gripped us so completeIv that we for- got how to laugh or to play. I can remem- •ber lying in bed at night waiting for the di:•ease to strike at me. I had no idea how it manifested itse}f and I lay very quietly pray- ing:.•that when next I wished to move my ]imIj• they. would respond as they had al- ways .done in the past.

There was one among us, however, who had no dread of the terrible plague. That girl was Irene Crane. In my mind's eye $ can still see her as she was back there in those difficult days. She was a yellow-haired child .with a gay ring to her laughter and the 'most inexhaustible capacity for fun of a•yone I've ever known. She was the school ß •muty, popular with teachers and .pupils alike and .if she was not the brightest of our ' .g•up that was easily forgiven for one does n• expect to find genius in a flower.

'• Irene had a sister who was a year young- li r. Her mother called her Caroline, but out-

de the house she was known as Irene's •ister. It was natural for her to ,be Irene's "•ster just as it was natural for us to .be a fi'ameless cluster of girls known as Irene's friends. Irene was the center of our small World and we revolved about her radiance an•l asked for no recognition for ourselves. Irene's sister, aware of her inability to com-

•n•re with the beauty and enchanting •man- of Irene, was perfectly content and ut- terly reconciled to be but a pale reflection (•f our yellow-haired commander.

.'Only once were we unable to think with h-ene. That was when she said, "I'm not -.ored of that infantile paralysis. We won't

get. it. You'll see. None of us will."

W • Were ashamed of our fears .but there they Were just the same.

I can remember the day that we all went over t Ginny Smith's house for games and light refreshments. For our health's sake, the grownups looked upon the gathering with misgivings, but for the ,good of our moral they consented.

"A ter all," they said to one another, "it's the •ame roup of girls who see each other anyway. tt',11 be all right."

"It's the same group" except for Irene's sister. She hadn't been invited because she was not in our grade and Ginny Smith hadn't known that Irene had a sister.

"It doesn't matter," Irene said. "Caroline isn't feeling well. She had an upset stom- ach,' I guess." . ......

.. PAGE FOURTEEN

The games •ere fun. the refreshments divine, we thought. It had been a beautiful day in which the most worrisome of us had forgotten that something stran•,e and ter- rible walked abroad beyond the cool comfort of Ginny Smith's hous. We •ere just col- lecting our belongings and thanking Ginny for a lovely day when the phone rang

I can still see Ginny Smith's mother as she stood talking on that phone. I can see the horror nd ity that appeared upon her face.. I ca• •.•ee th, tears that were ir

eyes when she hung up the receiver and turned to face us.

"Irene," she said in a choked voice, "that was •our mot he,'. Your sister has infantile paralysis. You can't go home. ' You'll have to stay here." There was a dreadful pause. Then, "It's too late for us 'to be afraid of you, child. You've been here all day."

We went away without touching Irene, some of us without speaking to her. The plague had reached out and flicked at us. We hurried home frightened of each other, ashamed of our fright and unable to keep back the thought that tomorrow we would all l• stricken •vith death or lameless.

Irene stayed with the Smith's, I suppose. I won't know. I dashed home and wrote at once to my father. It must have been an insane, frenzied little letter in •hich I begged him to come get me and take me to safety somewhere, anywhere. I did not know that the phgue •vas widespread. I thought it was just in our town. Anyway my father came and took me away. I wen! joyfully, thankfully, bu! I did not know as I went that it would b fifteen years before I ever saw that town again.

I was a woman when I returned to visit and the first night I was back I was sur- prised to find that my hostess's living room was .decorated as though for a party.

"Just the old group," she explained, "•nd their husbands. You remember Ginny Smith, Lila Day, the .Crane girls and that crowd."

A peculiar wave of terror ran through me at the mention of' the Crane girls. I was a child again cringing before a terrible mys- terious force-that wanted to kill. me.

"I remember them all," Isaid. "How are the Crane girls?"

"The same as ever ,but exactly the same. One popular and one a flop."

"It's cruel to say that," I protested. "Caro- line had 'paralysis. How can you expect he•' tto be--"

"But it's Irene who's a flop. She's silly. Remember how she used to laugh and 'play' joyes all .the time? She's still the same. BlJt you can't ask Caroline without asking Irefie so we--"

"But is Caroline well?"

"Of course she is. She had good care an d good sense used on her and she's as fine as anyone. A lot finer, I guess. She went through so 'much that she has more depth and understanding than most peoplet '•- She's so strong and dependable Of course she thanks her doctor and her nurse and her mother for everything and they say it was Caroline's patience and perseverance that helped them to help her. Wait tili you see her. She'• "

It was at that moment the bell rang and that my hostess's mother, who w, lo king out of an upstairs window, called o us, I'll never forget her words. She call , "Daugh- ter ,go to the door. It's Caroli 's sister."

My hostess looked at me and laughed. 'q•rhat .did I tell you?" she said.
