EDENin SLOVENIAThe “European Destinations of ExcelleNce” project or, in short, EDEN was designed by the European Commission in accordance with the guidelines of the European tourism policy. The overall objective of the project is to draw attention to the value, diversity, and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations, and to promote destinations, where the economic growth objective is pursued in such a way as to ensure the social, cultural, and environmental sustainability.

In Slovenia we decided to participate in the EDEN project in order to identify and award the most sustainable or green destinations, which act in accordance with the principles of environmental, socially responsible, and cultural sustainability, and thus facilitate their further development.

EDEN 2011: Idrijawww.idrija-turizem.si

STORIES OF PASTCENTURIESThe town with the once second largest mercury mine in the world boasts an amazing technical heritage: water channels (“rake”), the mighty wooden water wheel (“kamšt”), and the biggest preserved steam engine in Europe (“Kleyeva črpalka”). You can descend into the ANTONIJEV ROV shaft, the best arranged part of the mine for visitors. Here you can get lost in the memories of a 500-year-long mining tradition and maybe even chance upon the cave dwarf! The nearby IDRIJA MINER’S HOURSE from the 18th century provides you with an insight into the mining heritage. The CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY, the oldest church in Idrija, which stands on the site, where, according to folk tradition, the tub-maker discovered mercury. Above the city reigns the GEWERKENEGG CASTLE with the Idrija Municipal Museum that goes deeper into the mining heritage, and displays geological valuables and famous Idrija laces. The Idrija Lace-making School preserves the special style of hand bobbin lace-making technique, whereas the luxury of this tradition is presented during the annual IDRIJA LACE FESTIVAL. Enter a different life! Get to also know Idrija as the world of wild waters – it was one of the EDEN 2010 finalists!

THE UNDERGROUNDOF PECAUnder the 2,126 metres high mountain, known for the legend of the sleeping king Matjaž, lies a labyrinth with 1,000 kilometres of shafts resulting from the many centuries of digging for lead ore. The deserted mine of this remote and wooded part of Slovenia offers a unique experience. In the glow of overhead lamps, accompanied by a guide, you can cycle through a 5-kilometre long UNDERGROUND CYCLING TRAIL, which is an experience unlike any other! In a smaller group you can explore the UNDERGROUND WORLD BY CANOE. Under the guidance an expert you can visit famous PROTECTED WULFENITE DEPOSITS. The old administration building of the mine holds a MUSEUM with mineral and fossil collections, and a cave-surveying room, which offers ethnological presentation of the mining culture. EDEN 2010: Kolpawww.riverkolpa.eu

TOUCH THESTORYAt the southern edge of Slovenia the unique river Kolpa links a picturesque destination to neighbouring Croatia. Here, the river Kolpa is full of surprises with its natural channel, rapids, gorges, and gravel beds, while the countryside along its banks is remarkable for its biodiversity and a wealth of natural and cultural features such as steljniki – stands of birch trees with bracken undergrowth. One of Slovenia's warmest rivers offers a variety of experiences 'DOWNSTREAM ALONG THE KOLPA, UPSTREAM ALONG THE BANK'. The numerous walking trails running along the river are also great for cycling. Rafts and canoes are available for trips down the river. The river is suitable for swimming and, with many different species of fish, is popular with anglers. Experience the EXUBERANCE OF NATURE – in an area of extraordinary biological diversity you can encounter as many as 30 species of fish (nine of them on the list of endangered species) and around 100 species of birds. Karst waters are home to the endemic black proteus or 'human fish'. Other species found in the area include the European pond turtle, otters and beavers. The wider area of the Kolpa is an area of unspoilt nature which is still home to bears, lynx and wolves. Over the course of history, the Kolpa area has been a point of contact for three religions and five different peoples. As a

result, some truly special KOLPA STORIES are preserved here. Allow your imagination to be stirred by figures of myth and legend such as Green George and Peter Klepec and creatures such as the Bilpa Devil and the Kolpa Fairies. Feast your eyes on brightly painted Bela Krajina Easter eggs, embroidery, pottery, ceramics, wicker baskets and other local crafts products. Delight your taste buds with genuine local specialities such as Bela Krajina flatbread, Kostel-style stuffed pig's stomach and rusk-filled sausages. Make sure you sample the excellent local wines, Kostel brandy, fruit juices and natural mineral water. Fill yourself with energy with a visit to the vital energy centres and natural temples that form part of the 'World of the Kolpa – A Gift for the Soul' programme.

FRESH. VERY ACTIVE! 2010: Aquatic Tourism.

Rivers, lakes, waterfalls, the sea, springs of thermal and mineral water -- when it comes to water, Slovenia is the treasure house of Europe. Slovenian tourism develops in coexistence with water. Sustainable principles of development are inseparably connected with the conservation of natural features and the purity of water. Tourist destinations which have found their own special advantages in water competed to become Slovenia's European Destination of Excellence in 2010. The title was won by KOLPA: TOUCH THE STORY. Four other outstanding destinations competed in the final for this prestigious proof of sustainable development of tourism. Discover your favourite!

Idrija and the Zgornja Idrijca Nature Parkwww.idrija-turizem.si

A MYSTERIOUS WORLD OF WILD WATERSIdrija, which has previously submitted an EDEN entry based on its notable lacemaking and mining traditions, lives with powerful waters. The ZGORNJA IDRIJCA NATURE PARK is an area full of natural features and interesting technical and cultural heritage. A short walk from the town brings you to the RAKE, the channel that once drove the KAMŠT, the largest surviving wooden water wheel in Europe. A path running along the Rake leads to DIVJE JEZERO ('Wild Lake'), out of which flows Slovenia's shortest river – the 55-metre-long Jezernica. Not far from here are Jez pri Kobili and the picturesque STRUG valley with its pools, hanging bridges and overhanging cliffs. One of the most famous sights of the Idrija area is the KLAVŽE dam, sometimes referred to as 'Slovenia's Pyramids' because of its monumental size. LAJŠT is a natural bathing place at the convergence of the Idrijca and the Belca rivers. With its cool, clean water it is a paradise for bathers in summer. Besides swimming, activities include hiking, cycling, hillwalking and climbing.

THE ŠALEK VALLEY – THE DRAGON AWAKESThe Šalek Valley, famous as an important energy basin, has some remarkable water features: lakes that were formed by flooding the former coal pits. These lakes are home to a legendary lake dragon, Pozoj, who returned home when the once-polluted environment became clean again. The valley is a unique example of an environmentally rehabilitated area in Slovenia. The dragon is a symbol of sustainable green tourism on and around the lakes, with their walking, cycling, horse riding and other trails and recreation areas. The lakes themselves are ideal for boating and sailing. The surrounding area offers unique experiences of cultural and technical heritage. The castle houses the collections of Velenje Museum, while the underground Coal Mining Museum is a popular attraction. Tourists can discover the customs and traditions of the past at the Gril and Kavčnik farms and enjoy the present at summer events in Velenje!

THREE VALLEYS IN UNISONSolčavsko is an area comprising three valleys below the peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and the Karavanke range. LOGARSKA DOLINA is one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in Europe; ROBANOV KOT is a valley of large mountain farms; MATKOV KOT, the smallest of the three valleys, is full of surprises. The Solčavsko Panoramic Route leads to the Church of the Holy Spirit, the starting point for the route to the POTOČKA ZIJALKA CAVE below Olševa. Twenty thousand years ago this cave was the home of Ice Age hunters! The extensive Natura 2000 area is evidence of an outstanding level of nature conservation, a cause for admiration and respect and an invitation to discovery and enjoyment. In summer the valleys are the starting point for hillwalking tours, hikes and mountain biking. In winter, for ski touring, cross-country skiing and tobogganing. In this land of big old farms, venerable trees and waterfalls, you can experience ancient stories and treat yourself to typical local specialities!

Tolmin-Kobaridwww.lto-sotocje.si

LAND OF LIVING WATERThe TOLMIN GORGES are one of the most beautiful points of entry into the Triglav National Park. One particularly memorable experience can be had on the nature trail running along the deep narrows of the crystal-clear Tolminka and Zadlaščica rivers, past a hot spring and the wedge-shaped rock known as the Bear's Head, to Dante's Cave, the inspiration for the description of the Inferno in Dante's Divine Comedy, and then back across the Devil's Bridge, 60 metres above the river.

The wild gorges, roughly 200 metres long and between 5 and 10 metres wide, are an outstanding natural monument that you can discover by following this circular trail. The trail has been planned with a special respect for nature. Around the gorges, the Land of Living Water tourist destination has been developed in accordance with sustainable principles. Together with the Soča Valley it offers examples of extraordinary historical and cultural heritage, unique monuments of nature, summer festivals and opportunities for sports of all kinds in a natural environment.

KOzJANSKIPARKThe KOZJANSKO APPLE FESTIVAL is just one of the attractions of this area where sub-Alpine hills meet hilltop vineyards and the plains along the river Sotla meet the traditional meadow orchards that enrich the attractive appearance of the landscape. The traditional festival takes place every year on the second weekend in October. The Kozjansko Regional Park (Kozjanski Park) protects a rich cultural heritage in a well-conserved natural environment. Walks along the network of footpaths constantly reveal new details in the life of nature. The orchards of Kozjansko are the habitat of rare and endangered birds: here you can watch them, listen to them and photograph them. Sustainable orchard management provides apples and other fruit and an abundance of apple juices, vinegar, perry, traditional dried apples and pears and other tasty things. Other attractions in the park, other than the meadow orchards, include a diversity of natural sights, specific local cultural elements, castles, old mills, and so on.

NATURAL. VERY HOSPITABLE! 2009: Tourism and protected areas.

National parks, regional parks, protected landscapes, nature reserves and natural monuments and areas of outstanding biodiversity – all of these are examples of nature conservation. Over a tenth of Slovenia falls into specially protected areas, while more than a third of the national territory is protected as part of the Natura 2000 network, which protects the habitats of endangered plant and animal species important for the European Union as a whole. Tourist areas that concern themselves with sustainable development in connection with areas of this kind were the subject of special attention from the European Commission within the context of the EDEN 2009 project. In Slovenia, the title of European Destination of Excellence on the theme of tourism and protected areas was won by SOLČAVSKO: THREE VALLEYS IN UNISON. The other finalists were LAND OF LIVING WATER and KOZJANSKI PARK.

STORIES OF THE SOČAALONG THE PATH OF PEACEEvery year the mighty KLUŽE FORTRESS is the venue for STORIES OF THE SOČA: a re-creation of times past in the valley of the river Soča, from local cultural curiosities to the remains of the heritage of a cruel war. Stories of the surprising valley draw visitors to the Path of Peace, which connects the beauties of nature with memories of the First World War and the Soča (Isonzo) Front. The message of peace echoes among the Alpine peaks above the emerald river and into every corner of the TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK. No one who walks the Path of Peace from Log pod Mangartom near Bovec to Drežnica near Kobarid and to Mengore near Tolmin will forget the obligations of peace! One of the best conserved areas in Europe, it is popular with hikers, cyclists, lovers of water sports (canoeing, rafting, canyoning), anglers, hillwalkers and climbers, paragliders, skiers and others seeking an active holiday.

THE PREŠERENFAIRThe town of the famous poet Dr France Prešeren was once an important centre for agricultural fairs and markets. You can feel the pulse of the past on Slovenia's national cultural holiday (8 February) at the PREŠEREN FAIR. Cultural associations and folk groups in traditional costumes and the clothes of Prešeren's day conjure up a nostalgic atmosphere. Scenes from the life of Dr France Prešeren are acted out and his poems come to life on a stage in the middle of Glavni Trg, Kranj's main square. Visitors can try their hand at Brin (a traditional game where players use a spinning-top to knock down figures placed on a board), print their own copy of Prešeren's censored poem The Toast, or have their hair done and have their photograph taken dressed in the fashions of the 19th century. They can ride through Kranj in a horse-drawn carriage and fortify themselves with traditional dishes and beverages. The town on the gorge of the river Kokra is also attractive for its natural and cultural sights and events, particularly notable among which is the summer Carniola Festival.

LACE FESTIVALIdrija, a town whose connections with nature and water place it among the top destinations in the EDEN 2010 competition, is known throughout the world for its snow-white lace. Every year, at the end of June, the town and its extraordinary tradition of handmade lace come alive during the IDRIJA LACE FESTIVAL. The festival combines the tradition of skilled lace makers and that of the miners from the mercury mine, which opened way back in 1490. This internationally famous event is just one of the attractions of the town, whose mining traditions give it an important place in the technical heritage of Europe. Today, Anthony's Shaft offers tourists the chance to learn about the work of the miners, while numerous monuments of technical and cultural heritage teach visitors about the creativity and ingenuity of bygone days. The stories of miners and lace makers can also be discovered in the exhibition halls of Idrija Municipal Museum in the Gewerkenegg Castle and at the Idrija Lacemaking School and the International Idrija Lace Centre.
