The student will also be able to demonstrate these numbers with manipulatives.

(This lesson will be used as a practice test after a lesson to determine which students

have mastered the skill and which need more assistance. This lesson could be used as a

pre-test as the beginning of 1st grade to determine if each student has mastered the

previous school years standards.)

I will bring the students to the reading rug with assigned seating. ELL’s will sit closest

to me in the front of the rug. Then they will see lined next to me in a desk are 20 red

plastic cups. I will introduce them to the cover of the digital book of Numbers. I will ask

them what they think this book is about. After a few students have raised their hands and

provided answers, I will then read the book once. While reading the book the written

numbers in the book will be in Spanish and English and I will point to the number

as I read the English word. When we get to page 4 I will ask for a volunteer to come to

the desk with the red cups. I will then ask that volunteer to point to the cups starting at

one while the class counts also, as I place the written number on the cup, ending at

number 4 which is where we are in the book. I will then ask for another volunteer to

come to the front and place the number of beans in the first cup that represents 1, then 2,

then 3, and so on till 4. Then will then be individually assigned a number but can work at

their tables together. They will need to write the number and written word for the number

on a sticky-note which they will see modeled by the teacher during the during-reading

strategy. ELL’s may write the number word in Spanish with my assistance write the

word in English also. Once they are complete they will then go to the desk with the cups

and count the cups till they find the one that represents their number. They will then

place the sticky note on that cup. Once they are complete and I check for correctness

they will then take the cup to their desk and count out the number of beans that are

represented. While I monitor each students while walking through the classroom. Once

everyone is complete each student will place their cup back on the desk in numerical

order. In addition the individual student will be able to represent their number in the

book as we continue the uncompleted book and work as a class to complete the digital

book.

Each student will write the number and I will check for correctness. They will then write

the word for the number underneath and I will check for correctness. Then by using

manipulatives to represent their number I will be able to determine if they can use the

manipulatives properly.

ELL’s may recognize and write or verbally state the number in their home language and I

will then write underneath that the English translation of the number to help assist them

in learning the English word. They will also be aloud to count their manipulatives in their

first language if need to express their knowledge of number 1 -20.

Possible conversion of the book to home language only to help students with the content.

Then review in English with Spanish words underneath the number for them to relate the

English term to the number and the Spanish word.
