Message from Father Pergjini: “Saint John the Baptist had the most difficult office to fulfill: that rebuking a king. Not that it is difficult for a man of rude arrogant mind to say a harsh thing to men in power-no, rather, it is gratification to such a one; but it is difficult to rebuke well, that is, at right time, in a right spirit, and right manner. The holy Baptist rebuked Herod without making him angry; therefore he must have rebuked him with gravity, temper, sincerity, and an evident good-will towards him. On the other hand, he spoke so firmly, sharply, and faithfully, that his rebuke cost him his life.” This powerful quote written by the famous preacher of great

eloquence, Blessed John Henry Newman, is a very helpful meditation on the solemnity of the birth of Saint John the Baptist. What a great saint, prophet and martyr! This year June 24th falls on Sunday and the church in her wisdom celebrates this solemn feast even when it falls on Sunday. The whole story of his birth is very unique and echoes very well the Old Testament. Saint John the Baptist was fashioned in secret in his old mother’s womb. His parents, Zechariah and Elizabeth, humble, righteous and barren couple never thought that at their age they could be blessed with a son. Yes indeed what is impossible for men is possible for God. His birth, June 24th, six months before the birth of Christ is not a coincidence. Saint Agustin saw something very symbolic in the birth feast of Saint John the Baptist who was born in the summer, six months before the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, when the days are beginning to shorten, and Christ was born in the winter, when days are gradually getting longer. Also, Saint Agustin in the office of readings today states that: John was a voice that lasted only for a time, Christ, the Word in the beginning, is eternal." This humble and heroic Saint was the one to prepare the way of salvation, he baptized in the waters of the Jordan him who was the author of baptism, Christ. He pointed out that Christ is the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. And at the end of his humble and holy prophetic mission he shed his blood because he rebuked the sinful actions of the king Herod. During Advent and Lent we read his powerful voice to prepare the way of the Lord. At the Holy Mass before receiving Communion the priest holding in his hands the body of Christ says: Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world." And these are the words of this great saint that pointed out the physical presence of Jesus Christ to the crowds back then, and today the faithful who in reverence and adoration kneeling and looking at the sacred Host, listen again the same words of saint John the Baptist. I read and reread with great attention the significant quote of the Blessed Henry Newman and reflecting on the life of this heroic and saintly prophet, there is a powerful message for us today. Many Catholics today do not distinguish between the tolerance and the integrity of our faith. We as preachers experience frequently and encounter the angry and offensive words addressed to us after the Holy Mass is over when we touch the sinful moral issues that we experience today. On the other hand, if we are willing to compromise the truth and make feel comfortable people sitting in the pews we never can experience the power of his message. He denounced the sinful actions of the king and cried out in the dessert: repent and prepare the way of the Lord. Unfortunately, today certain sinful actions are not sinful anymore but just a life style feeling comfortable and pretending that Christ still loves all of us as long as we do not hurt each other. The love of Christ is the only thing that counts, purposely separated from the truth of Christ. But all we must know is that “Love and Truth" have the same source: Christ. It is impossible to separate one from the other. Saint John the Baptist moved by the Love and Truth of the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, Christ, rebuked the King Herod in order to save his soul. We as sinners, in desperate need of conversion, should take refuge in the powerful intercession of this great saint and beg for guidance to use the wise and prudent words of the Blessed John Newman in order to speak the Truth and Love of Christ to those who

do not have a clear vision of the these two fundamental and powerful elements of our faith: Truth and Love. “The holy Baptist rebuked Herod without making him angry; therefore he must have rebuked him with gravity, temper, sincerity, and an evident good-will towards him. On the other hand, he spoke so firmly, sharply, and faithfully, that his rebuke cost him his life.”

Saint John the Baptist and Blessed John Henry Newman, pray for us! Amen!
