When Pope Francis appeared on the balcony of the apostolic palace overlooking St. Peter Square, March 13, 2013 (his first appearance after being elected Pope) among his first words addressed to the thousands of people waiting at St. Peter Square, and mil-lions around the world, were: "Now, I would like to give you a blessing, but first I want to ask you for a favor. Before the bishop blesses the people, I ask that you pray to the Lord so that he blesses me. This is the prayer of the people who are asking for the blessing of their bishop. In silence, let us say this prayer of you for me."

He took a deep bow and waited silently for the prayer of the people. The whole world saw in awe and admiration that act of humility, a quality that has already endeared him to the world. That simple gesture spoke more eloquently than any words he could have spoken. The next day some headlines would recognize his humility. One newspaper said: “A Humble Man is Asked to Rebuild The Church.” Another headline said: “Pope’s Simple Actions and Dress Shift Vatican Tone.” Still another: “Pope Francis starts his tenure humbly” and many others similar headlines were heard and seen throughout the world.

Since that day Pope Francis has been witnessing to the Gospel with his simplicity and his humility; and his actions are speaking louder than his words. Because none of us is perfect, we need to witness to our faith with humility, knowing that it is God’s grace working in us and through us, not our own doing.

Humility opens us to know that we are special, to be aware of our talents, our achieve-ments, our dignity and our worth. The primary fiber of humility is truthfulness.

Humility makes room for God and for others in our lives. Without humility a believer cannot become truly wise, just or holy. We always need to remind ourselves that it is not all about us, that we are not at the center, but it is really about Jesus and about serv-ing others! To reconcile our sense of self-esteem with humility is to recognize that our self-worth, that our inner worth is derived from God.

From the beginning of his papacy, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI said he wanted his ministry to put the focus on Christ, not on himself as the pope. His first words after being elected pope were: “After the great Pope, John Paul II, the Cardinals have elected me, a simple, humble worker in the Lord's vineyard.” When he retired people were saying that his actions were an act of profound courage and great humility. I believe that is where Pope Francis is leading all of us…and leading by example.

Some have said that Bl. John Paul II could be described in one word: HUMILITY. His life was to show the light of Christ, not the light of himself.

This is how Pope Francis described Pope Emeritus BXVI: “Benedict XVI, during these years of his pontificate has enriched and strengthened the Church with his teaching, his goodness, his guidance, his faith, his humility, and his gentleness, which will remain a spiritual heritage for all.”

Saint John Vianney, the Curé of Ars, said that “Pride makes us hate our equals because they are our equals; our inferiors for fear that they may equal us; our superiors because they are above us." Therefore let us “walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8) - this will make us better people and contribute to make this world a better place.

Pre-World Youth Day Rally  and local Archdiocesan WYD celebration

Are there young people you know planning to go to World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 23-28, 2013? Perhaps there are many you know that would love to go, but are not able to at this time. Well, they can have a taste of World Youth Day by attending two rallies – one in June and the other in July.

The first rally is at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Bloomfield, NJ on Saturday, June 8, 2013, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The day will begin with a magnificent procession, complete with flags, dancers, inspirational mu-sic, and more! It will include a professionally taped dynamic catechesis geared toward young people by Bishop Edgar M. da Cunha; Eucharistic Adoration; Mass; an evening concert by exciting new bands; and much more! There will be food for purchase for a very nominal fee as well as WYD T-shirts with special graphics. http://www.rcan.org/evangelization/rio.pdf. To register email [email protected]. All youth are invited to these events – the June 8th event can be a precursor of WYD for those attending in Rio and inspire those that are not attending. The second rally, “Go and make disciples of all nations” will be on Saturday July 27, 2013 at the Archdiocesan Youth Retreat Center in Kearny, NJ from 1pm to 10pm. The cost is $10 a person and is open to all. Deadline to register at www.newark.oym.org is Friday July 12th. http://www.newarkoym.com/documents/Events/WYD/Local%20WYD13.pdf This is a great opportunity for those that can’t make it to Rio to have a full “taste of WYD” and includes cat-echesis and witness talks, live music, Eucharistic adoration, food, and “participation” in Pope Francis’ evening prayer vigil in Rio via a live satellite feed. For more information or to register contact Rich Donovan, Associate Director at [email protected] or 201-998-0088 Ext 4150.

The ChristLife series is bearing great fruit in many parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark. Following a two-day Arch-

diocesan Training Conference in April 2012, over 18 parishes have or are now offering the series. The average attend-

ance at each parish is 100 people. The enthusiasm grows as the series progresses from Discovering Christ to Follow-

ing Christ to Sharing Christ. Parishes are discovering the tremendous gifts and talents of their team members and

are using creative methods in their programs.

St. John the Evangelist, Leonia, shared:

“It was a very successful event here at our parish in Leonia as we had 75 people signed up. These parishioners came

faithfully each week to hear about Jesus Christ. ….Each session a different group from the parish cooked whether it

be K of C, Altar Society, Prayer group etc. Confirmation candidates served food and helped clean up. Everyone

pitched in which made it a truly successful event….Thank you for bringing ChristLife into our lives!”

E-Share

This e-share was submitted by a member of the team that is running the ChristLife series at St. Cassian’s Parish in

Upper Montclair:

Last summer I was asked to help facilitate a group for the new Discovering Christ program at our church. I hesitated

just because the fall is a busy time for me both at work and in terms of our teenage daughter’s after-school commit-

ments. However, I decided to give it a try. I cannot express how glad I am that I did.

Discovering Christ, followed by the second session of Following Christ in the spring, has been one of the best spiritu-

al experiences of my life. I felt so moved and touched by the Holy Spirit in ways that will remain with me always.

The relationships made have continued, and I am thrilled to say our small group is continuing to meet during the

summer. (We just didn’t want to wait for the third session, Sharing Christ, in the coming fall.)

Though we moved to this parish less than two years ago, I feel more connected here than I did in my former parish

(even though I loved it there and hated to leave it when we moved). I am so grateful to our Lord for leading me to

the Discovering Christ/Following Christ programs, and for leading me to a church family that reminds me of the ear-

ly church in terms of commitment and love for one another.

There was a palpable excitement in the air as 2,500 Catholic men entered the Seton

Hall University campus for the Fifth Annual Men’s Conference on March 2, 2013!

The Conference theme, “We Walk by Faith…” 2 Corinthians 5:7, was enthusi-

astically shared by the dynamic speakers.

Three speakers shared the stage at the English track. Michael Barber, Professor of

Theology, Scripture and Catholic Thought at John Paul the Great Catholic Universi-

ty, shared on “Overcoming Temptations in the Wilderness: Jesus as the Model of

Faith”; Thomas Smith, a convert from Mormonism, and the Baptist tradition, shared

his amazing life testimony as well as nuggets of wisdom from the Scriptures, and Richard Moore, Founder

of Children in Crossfire, and a child victim of the violence in Northern Ireland, shared not only how to

overcome tragedy, but how to use it as a vehicle for healing.

The Spanish track had distinguished presenters as well – Ruben Quezada, author of “Cristiada” and

Jose Prado Flores, lay evangelist with the San Andres School of Evangelization and prolific author and

lecturer at the Vatican.

The Holy Hour conducted by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and Holy Mass with Archbishop John J.

Myers as main celebrant were truly holy moments in time.

The Office for Evangelization was involved in various aspects of planning and coordination of this event

and was able to have a visible presence, sharing with the attendees the various offerings of the Office.

As part of the Fortnight for Freedom for Religious Liberty, a Holy Hour is planned for each county in the Archdiocese:

Bergen County on Wednesday, June 26th at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 787 Franklin Lake Road, Franklin Lakes at 7:00 pm with Bishop John Flesey presiding.

Essex County on Tuesday, June 25th at St. Philomena’s Church,

386 South Livingston Ave., Livingston at 7:30 pm with Bishop Edgar

da Cunha presiding.

Hudson County on Monday, June 24th at St. Henry’s Church, 82 West 29th St., Bayonne at 7:00 pm with Bishop Thomas Donato presiding.

Union County on Sunday, June 30th at St. Bartholomew’s Church, 2032 Westfield Ave., Scotch Plains following the 12:00 noon with Bishop Manuel Cruz presiding.

Archbishop Myers in a recent letter to the priests of the Archdiocese wrote:

“I am hoping and praying that a more earnest reflection by those entrusted with the care of the common good, will lead them to embrace the broader view of religious liberty and respect for the individual conscience that is both the tradition and the hallmark of the American com-mitment to ordered liberty.”

Archbishop William Lori of Baltimore also explained:

“The need for prayer, education, and action in defense of religious liberty has never been greater. The Fortnight for Freedom exists to meet that need. This year's Fortnight occurs just weeks before August 1, when the administration's mandate coercing us to violate our deeply-held beliefs will be enforced against most religious non-profits. During the Fortnight the Su-preme Court's decisions on the definition of marriage will likely be handed down as well. Those decisions could have a profound impact on religious freedom for generations to come."

Please join in prayer with brothers and sisters throughout the Archdiocese for the protection of our most precious freedom.

New Communication and Formation Tool - Webinar Series

Because of a generous anonymous donor, the Office for Evangelization has been able to initiate a new method of leadership training and formation using a webinar service. This service allows the OFE to give presentations via power point slides and audio talks through the computer. This donated service is presently addressing the needs of the Ecclesial Movement Partnership Commit-tee. The first in the series was on February 26, 2013. Our initial webinar speakers, Bishop Edgar da Cunha, Vicar for Evangelization, and Mr. Ron Pihokker, Director, Office of Catechesis of the Archdiocese of Newark, and member of the Evangelization Commission, focused on the recent history of the relationship of new ecclesial movements and the Church as well as important documents related to the Apostolate of the Laity.

In our second webinar presentation on April 23, 2013, Mr. Ron Pihokker focused on evangelization and ecclesial movements. At our third webinar presentation on May 22, 2013, Mr. Richard de la Fuente, member of the Evangelization Commission of the Archdiocese of Newark and member of the Bukas Loob Sa Dios Community, led us in a discussion of the Criteria of Ecclesiality. An added bonus segment was the personal witness and testimony of a member of The Bonds of Marian Love and a member of the Neocatechumenal Way.
