using nipa oranahaw leavesbuilt by myfamily and myneighborhood.



I am from the rice cooked by heating in boilingwater or steam that warmed my body andmade me do well in school, and made myNanay and Tatay proud.



I am from the smellof sampaguitaflowers as they

embraced my leanslender body formother strung theminto a necklace ashonorary symbols formy achievements atyear ends.



I am from the dirtroads adorned withipil-ipil trees andwooden bridgesthat connect smallrivers in the middle

of green valleys.



I am from the long almost empty dining tablewith two benches warmed by ten off-springswaiting on the sides to fill a predictable scarcenourishments.



I am from a family of one girl and nine boyswho trod to church on Sundays and listened topriests from foreign lands.



I am from fighting cocks in an arena…..

… and some buddieshaving fun with gin tonic andadobo.



I am from folktales,legends, and

stories from myfriends’ old grand

about my littlebarrio lit by lanterns

at dusks.



I am from songs and

words that I did notunderstand from aplace beyond on earlymornings.



I am from schools of a national anthem sung infour languages – Spanish, English, Filipino, andIlocano, my mother tongue - during those morningceremonies at school.



I am from the dream of adventure, recurringchildhood dreams of flying over mountains,

hills and glass houses, in search of new life,new beginnings amidst the hustle and bustlepursuit of the glorious American dream.
