discussion- of Saturdays bank statement was rather pessimistic and the lower prices for American shares in London and the fur- ther decline In British consols were in- fluences by no means stimulating sup plied by higher cables bulls supported the later positions on prospects that the SUit storm might work into the cotton belt delaying receipts and Injuring the crop Good general buying took place An attempt was made on the call to de- press the list notably October but de- mand from room and outside sources was too vigorous and prices immediately rallied The bull leader seemed to te supporting September which on the call sold up 20 points After the call prices yielded a little under realizing but in tho main held firm The market was oft several points from top toward midday but retained a steady undertone on demand from shorts and what seemed to be Investment buy- ing The late cables from Liverpool were favorable to a firm market here and Europe seemed to be buying moder- ately In our causing much apprehension It is more than probable that in the near future the Bank of England will make another advance in Its discount rate to prevent shipments of gold to the United States The market for Americans is lower but this is not considered important owing- to the unsettled The public continues to be apathetic and the banks and trust companies will do all thoy can to discourage The continued weakness of Brooklyn Rapid Transit Is attributed to the fact that all the earnings of the season have been used In Improvements Further- more pool operations of extensive pro portions which were expected to find a market at a high price have been un- able to sellS except on a declining market This is all there is to Brooklyn Rapid Transit and when liquidation of this pool stock Is completed there may be some reaction to considering Influences on the se- curity market the hope of good crops and consequent business activity In tha South and West Is the mainstay of tho market Should this be Jeopardized in the early news of the week it woqjd bo difficult to see how the market can be more than sustained If that Eightytwo roads for July show an average net Increase of 2610 per For the first week In September one roads report an average gross In crease of 943 per cent Farmers admit the crops are above normal In prices and what Is said in the London market may be quoted to describe the local state of affairs a condition bordering on Imbecility The new week opens with little en- couragement to those who hope for Im- provement and with more confidence on the bear side Four factors favor tho bear outlook These are the action the banks In retiring a large amount of accumulation at a time when the ury is trying to help the unsatisfactory showing of Brooklyn Rapid Transit for the year the uncer- tainty regarding weather and crops for the remainder of the month and the absence of the public from the market One of the most potent causes of hard times In this country In the quarter of a century previous to 1306 was recurrent periods of agricultural this in turn having been by overproduction of foodstuffs the world over which so low ered the price of grain that the American farmer was on oc casions almost driven to the wall The grainproducing area of the world In- creased faster than did the population that was the trouble about 1808 various geographers and statistical w- uthorltles began to call attention1 to the fact that practically no new grainpro ducing lands were opened while popu lation was making giant strides and their theories were accentuated by the great rise in wheat prices that year FISHING AT CHESAPEAKE BEACH Judging from the large sacks of crabs and long strings of fish that are being carried from Chesapeake Beach day the supply Is unlimited It necessary to throw a line with a piece of meat tied to the end Into the water any part of board walk to large crabs as fast as it Is pos sible to pull them out It has long been- a standing tradition that Chesapeake Bay crabs are the finest In the world The fish tailors sea bass croakers white and yellow perch cat carp and flounders seem to be more plentiful this year than over before To gratify the desire of anglers and the Chesapeake Beach will operate excursion trains a few days longer and a copy of the schedule may- be in the railroad column of this GROWTH OF AMERICAN BANK Banking circles all over the country are interested in tho surprising progress made by the American National Bank of this city at the close of its first tout months existence The institution has only about 10000 Invested In fix tures and sundries and on the last call showed undivided profits to tho amount of 519948 The business of the bank has increased steadily ever since the opening day May 4 when the deposits registered fl0766205 They stand today at 61684674 The officials of the bank have received numerous congratula- tory notes and telegrams on their show Ing and themselves feel gratified at the results In its infancy the American National Bank is close to banks which have been established from twelve to fifteen years HEADACHE RELIEVED INSTANTLY Got a constant America No ever tram the Cabers foul hear specula- tion Ca- tarrhal ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ The monetary outlook is giving less rather than greater anxiety as the crop moving pinch approaches This leaves tho outlook more dependent upon the crop situation The Governments has made excellent reports which the crit- ics are picking to pieces The critics are so seldom disinterested that their viewpoint is necessarily to be consid ered The criticisms the cotton yield have behind them apparently little be yond tho weight attaching to the utter ances of those affiliated with the cotton bulls But the critics of the crop statement condemn it upon its face The averages are high only In the States which produce little corn arid they are low In the States which produce the bulk of the crop A twobilllonbushel crop would seem the best to be ex- pected even if the frost does not dam age and there are many who would not be surprised by a smaller yield even if all goes well The annual report of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway which appeared- In the last days of August created a mild sensation among railway statisti- cians and analysts In a general way the results shown were not unexpected- for there has been a thorough apprecia- tion of the large inroads now being made in railroad gross earnings by operating expenses but as the Northwest is one of the most conservative roads in the country and money has been spent most lavishly In keeping it In firstrate condi tidh the feeling was that net earnings would snake at least a much better showing along Its lines than on those of many other systems A good deal of prlse therefore was manifested when it was found that the Northwest net had been reduced by 55000 and that its sur plus had fallen over 700000 Increased cost of transportation and general ex penses told the story although the loss In surplus was partially accounted for by an increase In construction account FINANCIAL STATEMENTS REPORT OF THE NEW YORK COTTON MARKETNEW YORK Sept 14 There was an

active and somewhat excited opening incotton today Besides the impetus supplied by higher cables bulls supportedthe later positions on prospects that theSUit storm might work into the cottonbelt delaying receipts and Injuring thecrop Good general buying took placeAn attempt was made on the call to de-press the list notably October but de-

mand from room and outside sourceswas too vigorous and prices immediatelyrallied The bull leader seemed to tesupporting September which on the callsold up 20 points After the call pricesyielded a little under realizing but intho main held firm

The market was oft several pointsfrom top toward midday but retained asteady undertone on demand from shortsand what seemed to be Investment buy-ing The late cables from Liverpoolwere favorable to a firm market hereand Europe seemed to be buying moder-ately In our market Sefcral beat

persistently sold the October option but that option held relativelyfirmer than later months all the fore-noon Fear of lower temperatures andof storm damage over the central belttoday checked conical bear selling

to the unsettled

The public continues to be apatheticand the banks and trust companies will

The continued weakness of BrooklynRapid Transit Is attributed to the factthat all the earnings of the season havebeen used In Improvements Further-more pool operations of extensive proportions which were expected to find amarket at a high price have been un-

able to sellS except on a decliningmarket This is all there is to BrooklynRapid Transit and when liquidation ofthis pool stock Is completed there maybe some reaction

The new week opens with little en-

couragement to those who hope for Im-

tainty regarding weather and crops forthe remainder of the month and theabsence of the public from the market

One of the most potent causes ofhard times In this country In the

quarter of a century previous to 1306

was recurrent periods of agriculturalthis in turn having been

by overproduction of

The monetary outlook is giving lessrather than greater anxiety as the cropmoving pinch approaches This leavestho outlook more dependent upon thecrop situation The Governments hasmade excellent reports which the crit-ics are picking to pieces The criticsare so seldom disinterested that theirviewpoint is necessarily to be considered The criticisms the cotton yieldhave behind them apparently little beyond tho weight attaching to the utterances of those affiliated with the cottonbulls But the critics of the cropstatement condemn it upon its face Theaverages are high only In the Stateswhich produce little corn arid they arelow In the States which produce thebulk of the crop A twobilllonbushelcrop would seem the best to be ex-pected even if the frost does not damage and there are many who would notbe surprised by a smaller yield even ifall goes well

The annual report of the Chicago andNorthwestern Railway which appeared-In the last days of August created amild sensation among railway statisti-cians and analysts In a general waythe results shown were not unexpected-for there has been a thorough apprecia-tion of the large inroads now being madein railroad gross earnings by operatingexpenses but as the Northwest is oneof the most conservative roads in thecountry and money has been spent mostlavishly In keeping it In firstrate conditidh the feeling was that net earningswould snake at least a much bettershowing along Its lines than on those ofmany other systems A good deal ofprlse therefore was manifested when itwas found that the Northwest net hadbeen reduced by 55000 and that its surplus had fallen over 700000 Increasedcost of transportation and general expenses told the story although the lossIn surplus was partially accounted forby an increase In construction account
