I-710 LONG LIFE PAVEMENT REHABILITATION PROJECTfrom just south of Firestone Boulevard to just south of Atlantic Boulevard

EXTENDED WEEKEND CLOSURES:

Approximately10ExtendedWeekendClosuresarescheduledbeginningFriday,August5,2011andcontinuingeachweekendthroughOctober. NoconstructionworkwilltakeplaceduringtheLaborDayholidayweekendoSeptember2-5.

ExtendedWeekendCl osuresbeginFrida yat8p.m.whenCaltranswil lcloseone laneinbothdi rectionsoI-7 10everyhour untilmidnight, (12:01a.m.Saturday),atwhichtimetheFULLFREEWAYCLOSUREisineect.Motoristswillbedirectedtousealternateroutes.

WiththeFULL FREEWAYCLOSUREin place,crewsworkthroughouttheni ghttoinstall atemporarymoveablemedianbarrie rsystemandto re-stripethelaneswithintheclosurelimits.

I-710will re-opentotrafc onSaturdaymorning at6a.m. Thetemporarymedianbarrierswill shitallmotor iststooneside othereeway. DuringeachExtendedWeekendClosure,twolaneswillbe availableornorthboundtra fcandthreelaneswillbeopenor southboundtrafc. Withareducednumberolanesandwithareducedspeedlimito45mph,motoristscancontinuetheircommutesonthissegment oI-710until Sundayat11p.m.whenthereewayullyclosesagaintoremovethetemporarymedianbarrier.

OnSundayat7 p.m.,Caltrans beginstoset-up orthesecondFULLFREEWAYCLOSURE. Onelanei neachdirec tionwillbe closedevery hour until11p.m.,a twhichtimetheul lclosureisi neect.Thetempora rymedianbarrier isremovedandtheroadwayisre-striped intimeorthe 6a.m.Mondaymorningcommute.

TheExtendedWeekendClosureplanallows orcontinuous53-hoursoconstructionworkonthepavementrehabilitationprojectwit hminimal impactstotrafcow.Thisplanexpeditestheconstructionproject,increasesthesaetyotheworkcrewsandothemotoringpublic,and minimizestheneedorweeknightlaneclosureswhentrafcvolumesarenormallyhigher.

Areducedspeed limito45mphwillbeposted andenorcedwi thintheconstruc tionzone.

Oversizedloadsarenotpermittedduetonarrowerlanewidths.

Motoristscanexpectdelaysandareadvisedtousealternateroutes.

Detoursignswillbeposted.Over30PortableChangeableMessageSignswillbeinplaceonreewaysandlocalstreetstodirectmotoristsaroundthe constructionzone.

Scheduledclosuresareweather-permittingandaresubjecttochange.

Caltransremindsmotoristst opleaseSlowortheConeZoneandtoobeytheMoveOverLawthatrequi resmotoriststoslowdownort omove overonelaneawayromashingamberlight sonvehiclesbelongingtocons tructioncrews,emergencyrespondersortowtruckoperatorswho maybeworkingontheroadside.

PROJECT DETAILS

TheCaliorniaDepartmentoTransportation(Caltrans)isworkingtorehabilitatetheLongBeachFreeway(I-710)pavementinbothdirectionsromjustsouthoFirestoneBoulevardtojustsouthoAtlanticBoulevardinthecommunitiesoBell,BellGardens,Cudahy,DowneyandSouthGate.

Theimprovements,aspartotheI-710LongLiePavementRehabilitationProject,willresultinlessuturemaintenance,therebyminimizingtra-fcdelays,costsandimpactsonsurroundingcommunitiesandtheenvironment.Theworkinvolvesrehabilitatingagingpavementandprovidingtheroadwaywithseveraldecadesoservicelie,improvedpavementperormanceandasmootherrideorthetravelingpublic.

Forthepastdecade,theI-710LongLiePavementstrategyhasbeenconstructedinstages:thefrstphaseextendedromthePacifcCoastHigh-way(StateRoute1)totheSanDiegoFreeway(I-405)andcompletedin2003;Phase2stretchedromI-405toI-105,andcompletedin2010.During2009toearly2011,Phase3continuedthepavementstrategyromI-105toFirestoneBoulevard.

NowinPhase4,Caltransiscontinuingsimilarworktoremovetheexistingpavementandreplaceitwithupto10inchesoLongLieAsphaltConcrete.Thisworkrequirescrackingtheexistingconcretepavement,thenreusingitasastrongoundationbase,ollowedwithanAsphaltConcrete(AC)overlay.Trafcmanagementequipmentsuchasfberopticcables,wire-loopdetectorsembeddedinthepavement,andClosedCircuitTVwillbeinstalledtomonitortrafcandtoprovidetrafcdatatotheLosAngelesRegionalTransportationManagementCenter.Theprojectincludessaetyenhancementssuchasaheightenedconcretemedianbarriertoreduceheadlightglare,drainageimprovements,lightingupgrades,signilluminationsystems,on-rampando-rampimprovementsandothersaetyeatures.

FundingorthisprojectwasmadepossiblebytheAmericanRecoveryandReinvestmentActo2009(ARRA),andbyProposition1B,the2006voter-approvedstatetransportationbond.

PROJECT STATUS:

FromApriltoJul y,2011,extensi veworkonthed rainagesystemand utilityli nestookplace intheshoulders betweenFlorence

AvenueandFirestoneBoulevard.

Theconcretemedianbarrierinstallationiscomplete.

AsoJuly2011,theprojectis30%complete.

Thepavementrehabi litationworko ccurringJuly throughOctoberencompassesthemajori tyotheprojec t.

BylateOctober2011,theprojectisexpectedtobe85%complete.

Thissegmentothe LongLiePavementRehabilita tionProjecti sexpectedto completebyspri ng,2012.
