So it means even more when someone takes the time to express his or her thanks for ex- ceptional service. And each month the public does just that for the RTD, commending bus drivers and information clerks for their on-the- job performance. Many of the letters and calls mention basic qualities like politeness, patience and a helpful attitude. Tom Horne, passenger services supervisor in Customer Relations, explained passengers especially notice the drivers' greeting, their response to questions, and their overall ap- pearance. As one letter writer described an operator, "He wears his tie and hat even during these hot days we have been having. He just seems to shine." Some passengers develop a sense of empathy with the drivers, sympathizing with their situation during hectic periods. Faced with a crowded bus, heavy traffic and a few rowdy teenagers on board, another letter writer remarked, "This man is unrivaled in my opinion as an example of self control that I envy." While the information clerks don't have face-to-face contact with the public, the people they assist appreciate the same friendly attitude that's easily transmitted through a telephone. "Patience, courtesy and exact directions" are the keys, said Barbara Hagen, chief of telephone operations. Especially valued, she added, are employees who volunteer extra information that the caller hadn't realized he or she needed. Sometimes the simplest effort can make a big difference. A despondent job-seeker, newly arrived in Los Angeles and unable to find work, boarded a bus and was greeted with a "big broad smile and a warm hello" from the driver. That passenger wrote, "Looking at him . . . greeting other passengers with such sincerity, warmth and affection, made me feel I'm important. Employees of Month praisedContinuing their tradition of recognizing outstanding on-the-job per-

formance, the Board of Directors commended three District employeesduring July.

Jordan G. Holland of Division 7 was selected as Operator of theMonth because during the 17 years he's been with RTD, he's received39 accommodations—a remarkable record. Holland acquired thenickname "Ace" during his high school days and it's stuck with him inhis job as an "ace" operator with an excellent safety and work at-tendance record.

Honored as Information Operator of the Month was Gregory Pitts.Many callers have complimented him for his telephone service, men-tioning qualities like quick and cheerful answers, courteousness andpatience. Pitts has also established an outstanding attendance recordin the two years he's been a District employee.

Clevester Young of Division 1 gets along extremely well with fellowworkers and is always willing to lend a helping hand. He also does out-standing air conditioning and repair work and is quick to take care ofany other necessary trouble-shooting. His superior 32-year servicerecord earned him the honor of being Maintenance Employee of theMonth.

June's Employees of MonthThe three Employees of the Month honored by the Board of Direc-

tors during June were Charles Higgins, Leslie Mae Smith and CaldwellManley.

Operator Higgins of Division 3-10 was honored for his safe drivingrecord, absence of miss-outs and his ready smile and pleasant attitude '

in dealing with the public. His friendliness often brings letters of com-mendation from his passengers. Higgins has been an RTD employeesince 1974.

Smith, Information Operator of the Month, has consistently ex-ceeded District standards in the accuracy of the information sheprovides, the number of people she helps, and her courteousness inanswering their questions. Many callers she has assisted have ex-pressed their gratitude to the department she ably serves.

Manley, Division 15 mechanic, was selected as Maintenance Em-ployee of the Month because of his dependability and the quality of hisbody, engine and electrical repair work. In his spare time, Manley alsoserves as volunteer bus driver for the Senior Center of Pasadena.

RTD policies, concerns andgoals were defined on August 22at Division 9 during another of acontinuing series of RTDManagement Team Rap Sessions.

George Heinle, manager ofoperations, led the informalquestion-answer exchange amongboth the transportation and main-tenance division managers andrank-and-file employees. He wasassisted by George Wells, generalsuperintendent of maintenance andequipment; Jack Walsh, generalsuperintendent of transportation;Ted Brennen, superintendent ofdivisions; and Bill Weaver, directorof safety.

Among the topics brought up bythe operators during the mid-morning meeting were the newstudent passes, the running timeon certain lines, busway violationsby carpools, work attendancepolicies, and layovers.

In the early afternoon, the rapsessions moved to the main-tenance division, where questionswere answered about the re-building of some divisions, theDistrict's promotion policy, shiftassignments, road calls and in-

The 59-year-old communica-tions veteran was guest speaker atthe RTD's Management Forum onWednesday, September 21 in theBoard Room.

Spirited, outspoken and unafraidof the controversial, he commentedon a variety of subjects at theForum, including re-vitalization ofdowntown Los Angeles, nightlifeand women's liberation. "I don't liketo be told whom I should respect. Ilike to open doors for women andall those good things," heremarked.

Hermann started in the com-munications field at age 14 as anewspaper re-write man and re-porter for the Herald Express (nowthe Herald Examiner).

In 1940 he was editor of theUniversity of Southern California'snewspaper, The Daily Trojan. Thenin 1951 he moved to the broadcastindustry, becoming a sports writerfor KNBC-TV.

Heinle cited exampleswhere valuable employeesuggestions were put into work, in-cluding the recognition of a bus'semergency flashers as a sign ofdistress to fellow operators orchanges in the location of a busstop. "These are specific thingsthat only the employee working dayin and day out would know about."

Another benefit is that the rapsessions give all employees, par-ticularly new ones, a clearer pictureof the District's policies andoperations, he said. As a result,when they encounter commentsand questions about the RTDduring social situations, they're bet-ter prepared to provide informedanswers.

"I work eight days a week, 26hours a day," he jested. Actuallyhe's on the job each weekday by10 a.m., and if things aren't wrap-ped up by 8 or 9 p.m., he'll continueworking through the night.

The RTD Management Forumconcept started in October, 1976to provide an entertaining and in-formative stimulus for both man-power and management during theworkday.

Recent Forum programs havebeen presented by TWA, CaliforniaInstitute of Technology, the Leagueof Women Voters, City AttorneyBurt Pines' Office, and theAssociation of Motion Picture Artsand Sciences.

Cash Counting: Some surprises amid dollars and dimesSituated in the central Los

Angeles area adjacent to a busyfreeway is a single, square brickbuilding. Aside from a lone windowand loading dock in back, there areno signs or markings to distinguishit. To most passersby, it's uni-dentifiable and uninteresting. Andthat's exactly what the building'sdesigners intended.

Within the structure, a highlyfascinating, top security operationbegins early each day. Literallytens of thousands of coins andpaper currency are sorted out,counted and prepared for bankdeposit.

Since 1969 when exact faretook effect, the RTD's cashcounting section has been handlingall the coins, bills and tickets drop-ped into all RTD bus fareboxesthroughout the District.

The first phase of the processoccurs when the bus pulls into thedivision for refueling. Its farebox isopened and the vault inside—containing all the money andother notes of value—is removedand secured onto a vault cart.

These carts, which can carry upto two tons, are then rolled into aRTD armored truck and driven totheir downtown destination. Whenthe truck backs into cashcounting's loading dock, the vaultcarts must pass through twoseparate sets of electronically-controlled doors before they reachthe building's main counting sec-tion.

Division 5 averages the mostamount of money . . . Division9 brings in the most tickets.

Inside, the pace quickens. Thevaults are unlocked and their con-tents dumped out. Cash clerksquickly set aside the dollar billswhile the remainders are fed intoone of three giant, metal cashcounting machines. Equipped with

a series of arched, black rubberhoses, the machines resemble atrio of deformed octopuses.

Within the machine, an airblower separates the tickets whilethe coins continue along a con-veyor belt. The coins pass througha set of vibrating plates which sortthe coins by diameter.

Dimes, nickels, quarters andpennies continue steadily alongtheir routes, passing through thehoses into the counting heads.From there they drop into the ap-propriate bag. Silver dollars, fifty-cent pieces and tokens, which aremuch less numerous, are detouredinto different bins and counted onspare machines.

As the cash clerks quicklylearn, the old cliche about"dirty money" is very true.

The process is amazingly ac-curate and quick, requiring about2'/2 minutes to fill a bag. It takes5,000 pennies, 4,000 nickels,10,000 dimes or 4,000 quarters tofill a single bag. Each one weighsbetween 34 and 50 pounds,depending upon the denominationof coins inside.

After the bag is full, it's removed,sealed, tagged and its weightchecked. Then it's placed aside,ready for bank deposit.

The cash clerks count onedivision's receipts at a time.Division 5 averages the mostamount of money, about $30,000or more on a weekday, reportedBob Miller, cash counting super-visor. Division 9 brings in the mosttickets.

Throughout the process, com-prehensive records are made ofthe number of vaults arriving, thedivision and bus they came from,who handled them and how muchmoney was collected. The totalsare re-verified by readings takenfrom the cash counting machine.

All the counting activity takesplace inside a bullet-proof, heavilyprotected structure, equipped withintercoms and television monitors.A communication link-up to thepolice is also available.

When the employees report forwork, they enter isolated dressingrooms to change into their pocket-less uniforms. They're prohibitedfrom wearing undergarments withpockets. No one leaves thepremises during working hours; allbreaks and lunches must be eateninside the building's kitchen.

It's a seven-days-per-weekoperation, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ifthey're not finished counting all thereceipts from the previous day,they stay over until the job's done.No money is left in the buildingovernight.

As cash clerks quickly learn, theold cliche about "dirty money" isvery true. Filth from the coins buildsup inside the machines, requiringfrequent servicing. Most em-ployees wear gloves. Overhead, afiltering system removes dust cir-culating in the air.

Cash counting is also a noisytask, as the sound of coins janglingin a pocket is multiplied hundredsof times over within the work area.Protective ear coverings are man-datory.

The workload varies, with theheaviest collections made on Mon-days and Fridays, and the lowestpoint occurring during weekendsand holidays.

Business is especially good thefirst working day of the month,when pension and welfare checksarrive. The busiest day of all is thefirst working day following NewYear's.

However, bad weather candisrupt that pattern. Revenue dropsabout 20 per cent on a cloudy day,Miller said. Rainy days are evenworse, as more people drive orstay home. "I can pretty much tellthe weather on any particular dayby glancing at the receipts," hesaid.

When the District had a basefare of 25 cents, cash countingcollected mostly quarters. Nowwith the 40-cent fare, they've had abig increase in dimes and nickels.

"We got a call about a bullfrogone day . . ."

But the fare hike affected theirworkload dramatically in anotherway. "Paper currency more thandoubled," reported Tom Collins,RTD cashier and assistanttreasurer. "It's slowed down ouroperation."

While the bills are supposed tobe folded three times and paper-clipped before being dropped intothe farebox, many of them areturned in tightly folded six or seventimes. It requires tedious, time-consuming unfolding by the cashcounters.

Consequently, the departmenthas had to add three more em-ployees and they've purchased anelectronic bill counter that com-putes one-dollar bills by weight.Fives, tens and larger bills are stillhand-counted.

But not everything that finds itsway into a bus farebox makes it tothe bank. About 50 pounds offoreign coins are collected everythree months. They're eventuallyput up for public bid.

And there's an assortment of..mostly valueless odds and ends.Miller pulled open his "junk drawer"to display some of the items thathave turned up in fareboxes. Like atoy treasure chest, it was filled withshiny rings, bracelets, keys,penknives, marbles, beads anddice. There's an occasional bullet,pair of eye glasses or false teeth.These objects are retained for afew months and then thrown out ifleft unclaimed.

But perhaps the most startlingstory of all involved someone's ap-parent pet. "We got a call about abullfrog one day," Miller said. "Butwhen we found him, he was dead."

Keep spooks,goblins safe

Halloween—the night filled withhobgoblins, witches and otherAkcolorful fun-seekers—is jusWaround the corner. It's an eagerlyawaited, fun holiday for the smallfry, but it can present serious traffichazards for motorists.

The National Safety Councilurges all drivers to be doublydefensive when driving on October31. Many of the trick-or-treaterswill be wearing masks that restricttheir vision or cumbersomecostumes that hamper movement.Moreover, the merrymaking spiritcan cause youngsters to becomecareless.

According to the Council, themajority of Halloween accidentsoccur when children dart out frombetween parked cars. So it's ad-visable for motorists to drive slowerthan normal in residential areas.And it's also a good idea to makesure car headlights and windshieldare extra clean for ample visibility.

For the parents of trick-or-treaters, the following safety tipsare urged:

— Review traffic laws with thechildren, emphasizing they crosilikstreets only at marked crosswalkobey all traffic signals and wait onthe curb before entering the street.

— Map out a route for them,marking stops at homes where theresidents are known;

— Encourage them to do theirtrick-or-treating during earlyevening hours when it's lighter;

— Select light-coloredcostumes and decorate them andtheir sacks with reflective tape. Thecostumes should fit properlywithout obstructing their vision;

— Try to have an adult ac-company small children throughoutthe evening, serving as a guide anda quieting influence.

Alfred Sassano is a man whodoesn't believe in keeping still.When he's not driving buses out ofDivision 8, he's lifting weights orrunning long distances.

But more remarkable than that,his family and friends are mostlikely to find Sassano in his sparehours performing 180s, 360s,flying aerials, power slides orhandstands—all on wheels.

Sassano is an avid skateboardrider, maneuvering fancy turns andexecuting gymnastic-like feats ontop of his custom-made skate-board. He's gotten so good at itduring the last 1 1/2 years since hetook up the sport that SkateboardMagazine recently expressed in-terest in reporting on him.

While the bus operator has

always believed in keeping inshape, he actually became involvedin skateboarding when his eldestson Dean bet him $5 he couldn'tremain standing on one. Threemonths later, Sassano was rivalinghis son for the family title ofskateboard champ.

"I started out in the hallways ofmy house where I could hold ontothe walls," he explained, and "thenI ventured into the driveway." As hegained confidence, Sassano prac-ticed in empty drainage ditches anda local dam. Now about three timesa week he goes to nearbyprofessional skateboarding parkswith specially built, steep angle"bowls" for executing fancy turnsand flips.

He takes all three children withhim—Dean, 15; daughter Linda,10; and son, David, who is 5; plushis girlfriend Rose and her 4-year-old son, Michael. "Everybody rides.No one just sits and watches," hesaid.

"Skateboarding in the park is notthe same as skateboarding in thestreet," he warned. And hecautioned against commercialskateboards sold in toy stores.Calling them "bone crushers," hesaid many are constructed with in-ferior materials. Sassano made hisown skateboard out of solid oak

and then added specially-builtparts, for a total cost of about $85.

Like many other avocations,skateboarding can be dangerous.Above all, it requires balance, hestressed, plus "a good wind andknowing how to fall. You can't befrightened or you'll get hurt."

For proper protection, pro-fessionals wear knee and elbowpads, tennis shoes, wrist and hipguards, and a helmet.

Thus far Sassano has only suf-fered one significant injury. Hebroke his wrist while skateboardingin a drained swimming pool. Afterhe got the cast, he immediatelyreturned to his practice sessions inthe pool.

Specializing in a pasttimetypically regarded as youthoriented, the 37-year-old busoperator goodnaturedly dismissesthe teasing he gets from fellow busdrivers. "Age is no limit," he said."It's only a number." Besides,skateboarding keeps him trim.

"I never sit down," the busoperator added. "I hate sittingdown." Except, of course, when heand Dean team up to perform acatamaran. Using two skateboards,father and son sit down, interlocklegs and are pushed into the bowlfor another exhilarating ride.

Something for everyoneThe RTD's First Annual Old-

Fashioned Western Picnic onAugust 28 more than lived up to itsclaim of "just plain fun!" The dayturned out to be a lively and highlyenjoyable one for the more than2,500 employees and family mem-bers who turned out at the privateCalamigos Ranch in the Malibu hills.

A total of 31 buses, withtransportation service from everydivision, carried many of the picnic-goers to their destination. There 35grassy acres offered softball

diamonds, volleyball courts, a small s(

lake with fishing and boating, large mswimming pool, mechanical and c(

pony rides for the kids, barnyard p(

animals, hayrides, music and pishaded picnic areas.

Probably the toughest task of lathe day was deciding what to do

next. Friendly sports competitions pEand games continued throughoutthe afternoon, including bas ill,volleyball, swimming, table to 0,

All the excitement worked up aa hearty appetite and thirst. RTD pic-

nic-goers consumed 3,000 ser-vings of popcorn, 14,000 softdrinks and 6,000 ice creams, in ad-dition to unlimited helpings of bar-bequed chicken and beef, bakedbeans, salads, cold cuts, and rollsfrom the chuck wagon-style lunch.

By the end of the afternoon, theday's activities had taken their tollon some picnickers. As the photobelow shows, at least a fewretreated to a comfortable, shadyspot to engage in their own favoredpicnic-time pursuit—good, old-fashioned napping.

We regret .. .

The response to the RTID'sFirst Annual Picnic was over-whelming and very gratifying,with ticket sales exceedingoriginal expectations. Every ef-fort was made to accommodateeveryone wishing to attend.

Unfortunately, becauseprompt, full food and beverageservice required a definiteestimate of the number of per-sons expected, picnic ticketsales had to be cut off theprevious Friday afternoon whenthat limit was reached.

Employee Relations regretssome persons who waited untilthat day to obtain tickets had tobe turned away. If you were oneof those who missed the bigevent, we sincerely apologizeand promise you RTD's SecondAnnual Picnic will be even biggerand better!

That division, in keeping with the RTD's newincentive program to curtail the number of road calls occurring throughoutthe District, recorded the biggest reduction in road calls per miles operatedover the previous month. Fall, winter trips await

RTD's ByronLewis honored

Byron Lewis, RTD director ofpersonnel, was honored for hisoutstanding service at the 1977awards presentation of theAmerican Society for Public Ad-ministration (ASPA), Los AngelesChapter.

Lewis became the 1977recipient of the Will BaughmanAward for "significant con-tribution to the development,growth, and strength of thechapter over a considerableperiod of time." As the awardscommittee noted, over the yearshe had served on the chaptercouncil, as membership chair-man, secretary-treasurer,awards coordinator, and onmany other committees, as wellas operations chief for theirnational conference.

Founded in 1939, ASPA is anational organization for those in-terested in improving public ser-vice at federal, state and localgovernment levels and withinuniversities, non-profit organi-zations and private firms withpersons administering to thepublic's business needs.

Oldest retireepasses away

A page of RTD history wasturned on August 25, 1977 whenthe District's oldest retiree, WilliamDaniel McArthur, passed away. Hewas 102 years old.

Born on June 13, 1875 inFranklin, Tennessee, McArthurcame to California and in 1906joined what was then the LosAngeles Railway. He worked as amotorman at Division 1 until 1920,when he became a substationoperator in the power division. OnJune 16, 1945 he retired.

For his 100th birthday, hereceived a congratulatory letterfrom then-President and Mrs.Gerald R. Ford. He was alsohonored by the RTD with a birthdaycard and cake. A privatecelebration was held at the con-valescent home in El Monte wherehe spent his remaining years.

Change of colorDistrict employees may have

noticed that some of the super-visors and instructors have lookeddifferent lately. Their usual Burgun-dy Suraline textured polyestergabardine jacket is now beingreplaced by a Marina Blue one.

Supervisors and instructors cancontinue to purchase and wear theBurgundy-colored jacket. However,since supplies of them aredwindling, the Marina Blue oneswill be phasing out the former color.

The second jacket was ap-proved as a permanent part of theofficial supervisors' and instructors'uniform in time to insure that no onegoes coatless this winter.

RTD's Family Fun Party atDisneyland on September 18 drewa terrific amount of interest. Over3,000 employees took advantageof the economical prices for a fullevening of exciting Disneylandrides, attractions, music and liveentertainment.

To follow up that response, theRTD has arranged a Family Night atMagic Mountain on October 15 and16. Like last year, the eventpromises to be another well-attended, fun night. See page 5 forfull details.

On October 14, over 100 RTDemployees and family members willbe boarding a Continental DC-10for romantic Hawaii. The low $299per person price (based on doubleoccupancy) covers round trip airfare, seven nights' accommo-dations at the Napualani Hotel,transfers, tips, welcome breakfastand more.

The Second Annual ChristmasDiscount Trip to Las Vegas isscheduled for December 16 and17. This cut-rate package, pricedat just $29.50 per person for ac-commodations at the FremontHotel, offers a considerablesavings over the regular $41.50per person price.

Undoubtedly, one of the finestpleasures in life is good music. RTDemployees could make beautifulmusic together, provided theirtalents are combined and coor-dinated.

Two years ago the District tooksteps to begin organizing musicalgroups within its ranks. A survey ofthe musically-inclined indicated thata lot of talent was going untappedin the form of banjo strummers,glee club singers, piccolo players,former college music majors, trom-bonists and others at varying levelsof experience.

Unfortunately, initial organizationattempts were bogged down andthose persons eager to participatewere disappointed. However, thistime the Recreation Departmentpromises to carry through theproject—if enough personsrespond.

The possibilities of employeemusical groups are almost limitless.Barber shop quartets, bands, stringensembles, or chorale groupscould be formed to showcase theirtalents during special RTD

Employees will have an op-portunity to welcome in the NewYear on another scenic island—Catalina. The New Year's EveCatalina trip will leave during theearly evening and return in the weehours of 1978. There'll be a buffetdinner (not included in the initialprice) and dancing at the historiccasino to complete the celebration.

Other visits to interesting places ,kinclude a trip to Mazatlan departing.'"January 10, with a full week's stayat the El Cid Hotel Resort Beach.Non-stop air service, free tennisand golf, swimming, and a festivearrival cocktail party at the hotel willbe included during this "Spend ALittle, Play A Lot" Mexican holiday.

Much further down the road,preliminary plans are to put to-gether a tour package for Tokyoduring late 1978.

And if Mother Naturecooperates this year by providingenough snow, there are hopes ofscheduling a ski trip to the Sierrasthis winter for RTD winter sportsenthusiasts.

The District will provide allnecessary equipment, except in-struments. In addition, the programwill be coordinated by a musicdirector devoted solely to this end.

The project isn't searching forprofessional musicians in RTDuniforms. What counts is genuineenthusiasm.

It's an opportunity for em-ployees to dust off their musical in-struments, expand their singingbeyond the shower walls, meetother persons from throughout thecompany, and have a good time.

Kenny Parker ofDiv. 8 mourned

The District was saddened tolearn of the loss of Kenny Parker,transportation manager at Division8, on July 20, 1977. He died of aheart attack.

A native Californian, Parker wasborn on September 27, 1921 inLos Angeles. His more than 30years of transportation servicebegan on March 27, 1946, whenhe started as a dispatcher withAsbury Rapid Transportation Co.During the ensuing years, he waspromoted through the ranks, laterbecoming part of the Los AngelesMetropolitan Transit Authority.

More recently, on Jan. 1, 1968he became assistant transportationmanager at Division 3-10 and thendivision manager at Division 7 onMay 1, 1970.

Parker went to Division 8 onJune 3, 1973 where he servedably as the transportation manager.

In addition, since 1966 Parkerhas been actively involved in theCredit Union. He became a mem-ber of their board of directors in1971 and two years later waschosen as board vice president.

The following year, when FrankMatzner, board president, died,Parker served as president protempore until that term ended andwas subsequently elected aspresident in 1975—a position hemaintained until his death.

Parker leaves his mother, ClaireParker; wife, Adalene; and son,Kenny Jr.

The 14 competing finalists werewhittled down from over 100operators who entered thepreliminary roadeo try-outs onAugust 6 and 7.

The preliminaries not only in-and the driving test, but a safety

rule book quiz, personal ap-pearance rating and a pre-trip businspection test. The highest scorerfrom each division then went on tocompete in the finals.

To qualify for the competition, alloperators had to have been em-ployed from June 1, 1976 to June1, 1977 and have spent at least 11of those months as a full-time busdriver. He or she also had to meetrequirements limiting the number ofmissouts, illnesses or sick daysduring that time, as well as have arecord free of suspensions,

avoidable accidents and demerits.The National Bus Roadeo, spon-

sored by the American Public Tran-sit Association, is designed to testsafe driving skills and knowledgeas well as reward employees whohave maintained top driving re-cords and professional attitudes.

As part of RTD's recognition ofthese drivers, an awards presen-tation banquet will be held atLuminaria's Restaurant in MontereyPark on October 6. Besidesspecial plaques, Brenchley willreceive a $500 savings bond, Baezwill be awarded a $200 savingsbond, and Downes will be therecipient of $100. The remaining11 runners-up with all receive a$50 certificate.

Competition at this year'sNational Roadeo is expected to beslightly stiffer than in 1976because more transit companiesare anticipated to enter. First prizethere brings $1,000, trophy andthe esteemed title of national cham-pion bus operator.

Minneapolis-born Brenchley,who's been with the RTD for sixyears, said he's never been toAtlanta before. The entire Districtwishes Brenchley the best of luck!

Operator Aaron Dorsey Jr. ofDivision 6 and his wife Catalinahave announced the arrival of theirsecond child, daughter Monique B.,born on August 11. Moniqueweighed in at 6 lbs. and 15 oz. TheDorseys have another daughter,Cathy.

After 35 years of separation, itwas a joyful reunion for OperatorHarold Lee of Division 15 and hisolder brother, James R. Lee. Jameshad run away from home whenHarold was about six years old andhadn't been seen since then. Aboutthree years ago, the family's effortsto trace him were successful whenJames was located in MichiganCity, Indiana. The two brothers keptin touch by telephone until August16. Then "he called me from thebus station in L.A. and scared theheck out of me." Harold's responseto the happy, long-overdue reunionwas "I love him."
