iQnnual/ epot, o the ouncilFor ihe Year Ended 31st December, 1956

Ladies and Gentlemen-

Your Council has pleasure in presenting the Annual Report, Statement of Accounts, Balance Sheet, and GeneralReview of the Council, for the period ended 31st December, 1956.

Once again Council is able to report on a successful year notwithstanding the fact that the period covered by theReport has been most difficult with costs continually rising and our income showing a slight decrease. Council feelsthat to increase admission charges to the bnnual Exhibition is not desirable and consequently is implementing rigideconomy wherever possible without affecting the standard of the Show or appointments of the Showgrounds. However, our 1956 Exhibition met with a wonderful response from exhibitors in all sections with attendance figures being close tolast year's record.

Council is proud of the effort of the thousands of exhibitors who made the 1956 Exhibition such an outstanding success, proud of the ready response from our Prize donors who subscribed £9,037 towards the special Prize Fund; proud ofthe 706 560 members of the general public who contributed a sum of £92,538 in gate money, and doubly proud ofthe 3,544 Full, and 5,071 Associate, Members who added £32,265 to the Association's income. Council fully realisesthat while the great annual programme of the Association has become a highly organised effort its ultimate successis only assured by the very widespread co-operative effort of thousands of its wellwishers in all walks of life, who throughtheir untiring assistance as Judges, Hon. Council Stewards, Hon. Stewards, and others who in many ways have assistedthe Association in carrying out its national work. That Council's policy to make the Show representative of all phases ofthe Primary and Secondary Industries and to impress on City and Country residents the relative merits of each other'scontribution to the national welfare, has received endorseme nt is evidenced by the splendid public support recorded duringrecent years. Members will find confirmation of this by a study of the following statement of attendance figures, gatetakings, and membership returns, picked at random from Shows held since 1939.

Year Attendance Gate Takings Membership1939 403,253 £25,365 £6,9481946 509,131 £41,429 £9,8221948 623,579 £47,016 £16,1131950 708,086 £49,888 £19,9891952 689,190 £73,716 £22,6691955 721,795 £97,033 £34,3511956 706,560 £92,538 £32,265

For 1956, Council decided on a progressive programme of increasing prize money by approximately 10% in mostsections, and when final entry figures were tabulated it was gratifying to learn that the educative efforts of Council toencourage and stimulate production from the soil, the breeding of live stock, and the fostering of secondary industries, were received with great enthusiasm. Prize money paid for the Show amounted to £24,533 and a grand total of 21,769entries was received with sectional entries being as follows:

Horses, 5,592; Beef & Fat Cattle, 939; Dairy Cattle, 1,247; Sheep & Wool, 295; Pigs, 540; Goats, 123; Dogs,2,096; Poultry, 3,765; Dairy Produce, 243; Cats, 65; Dist. Exhibits, 3; Wines, 346; Junior Farmers Inter Zone'Competition5; Junior Farmers Inter Club Fruit Exhibits, 4; Apiculture, 130; Fine Arts, 863; Needlework, 593; Cookery, 805;Work, 1,059; Dist. Fruit Exhibits, 4; Horticulture, 1,597; Judging Competitions, 425; Sheep Dog Trials, 56; Wood-chopping, 821; Pasture Improvement, 102.

In addition to the foregoing competitive exhibits, Council appreciates the displays of the Dept. of AgricultureStock, Forestry Dept., Dept. of Health & Home Affairs, Govt. Tourist Bureau, Dept. of Native Affairs, Queensland Meat

Industry Board, Queensland Butter Marketing Board, Queensland Cheese Board, Queensland Cotton Board, Australian SugarProducers Association, Queensland Canegrowers Council and the North Queensland Tobacco Growers Association. TheFruit Pavilion featured non-competitive displays by he Gayndah Co-op. Fruigrowers Association, the C.O.D. DeciuousSection Committee, the C.O.D. Pineapple Section Committee, The Horticultural Pavilion, as usual was a mass of colourand supplementing the usual range of competitive classes were exhibits from Municipal Councils, Montrose Home forCrippled Children, Dept. of Health & Home Affairs Institution Gardens, Factory Gardens, and Wild Flowers from Landsborough

Among special features in the Ring were displays by 900 girls from Metropolitan Catholic Schools who gaveoutstanding performances in eye catching costumes and coloured torches. A full and varied Ring Programme was stagedthroughout the whole Show and was received with intense interest by packed ringside spectators during most sessions.

The Official Opening Ceremony was performed on Wednesday, 15th August, by His Excellency the Governor SirJohn Lavarack, attended by R.A.A.F. Guard of Honour and Band. There is little to report on progress made in the acquisition of additional land to house the many trade displayswhich at present we are unable to accommodate on the Showgrounds. However, Council realises that in due course the

State Government will give every assistance in this matter, During the period under review properties valued at £4,620were purchased. Council has now received £23,692 as an advance from our Bankers on account of these propertiespurchased to date. This advance is the first call on the loan of £50,000 authorised by members at the 1955 AnnualGeneral Meeting.

FINANCE: Perusal oef the Statement of Accounts which accompanies this report will give some indication of thesound financial position of the Association which, on this occasion, is drawn so as e to enable Members to compare 1956figures with those of 1955.

The surplus this year is much smaller, mainly for the reason that income is lower and Council's decision to leaveno stone unturned to keep appointments in first class condition by carrying out urgent maintenance work an a numberof the major wooden buildings on the Showgrounds. It is thought that later on a long range scheme to replace such oldbuildings with modern structures would be sound economics, as Maintenance during the year amounted to £61,459.

In addition to this work, Capital Improvements totalling £33,954 have been carried out on the Groundsduring the period under review. This included purchase of additional properties, improvements to fat cattle yards, dairycattle, beef cattle, pig and poultry pavilions, lavatories and electrical mains, the completion of the sale ring, new horsestalls, a new brick bar.For the future Council is desirous of conserving Funds for the purpose of being able to finance from the Association'sown funds a large part of the necessary development and improvements on the additional properties being secured, andthus obviate the necessity of having, to so frequently approach our Bankers for additional loans.

PERSONNEL OF COUNCIL: At the first meeting of Council following the Annual General Meeting, Mr. C. P.Bottomley was reappointed Hon. Treasurer and Messrs. Archer, Davies, and Edwardls, as members of the Finance Committee,of which the President and Vice-Presidents are ex-officio members. During th year the senior Vice-President, Mr. P.J. Symes, retired from the Council after serving for an unbroken term of 43 years. In appreciation of Mr. Symes' out-standing services in the interests of the Association, Council duly appointed him an Hon. Member of Council. Mr. DouglasWadley at the July meeting was appointed Vice-President, and Alderman L. S. Rudd was appointed to fill the vacancy
