Initial configuration for Hyper-v Replication
Since its recommend to use sepereate network for replication, we are going to configure dedicated
network on Hyper-v server for replication
There is a one network adapter dedicated for Hyper-v replication on each host. Its configured on
192.168.10.0/24 subnet.
Conigure Hyper-v replication settings on each hsot
Open Hyper-V manager > Click on “Hyper-V Settings”
Assign the simultaneous live migrations(by default its 2)
Select “Use These IP address for live migration” > Click on “Add” > Add the replication network
subnet(In this lab guide its 192.168.10.0/24)
Select “Advanced Features” under Live Migrations > Select “Use Kerberos” as Authenticatio protocol
*Kerberos is more secure than CredSSP
Open Hyper-V manager > Hyper-V settings > Select “Replication Configuration” > Select “Enable this
computer as a Replica Server”
Select “Use Kerberos(HTTP)” > Select “Allow repliction from any authenticate server” > Assign a
location for replicate the VMS
In a WAN enviorement we can use “Send initial copy using external media” and send vm using external
drive
Click on “Finish”
Now initial replication is sending over the network
View Replication Health
Right click on the VM > Select “Replictation” >
Select “View Replication Health”
Planned failover
Planned failover option is aviilable on primary host and we can perform this active when we are having
some planned downtime, maintaince work on primary site or primary host.
To perform planned failover the priamry virtual machine should be in a power off mode
How to perform planned failover
Right click on the vm > Select “Replication” > Select “Planned Failver”
Select “Fail Over”
Now virtual machine running on the destination host
Cancle Failover
Cancle failover active is initialted to cancle the failover process and is available to be performed on
Replica virtual machine
How to perform “Cancle Failover”
Right click on the virtual machine > Select “Replication” Select “Cancle Failover”
Select “Yes” for continue the cancle replication, in this process data will be loss after the failover
operation started
Test Failover
This action can be perform on a replica virtual machine and this will allow us to ensure the replica
macihne can run online in case of a disaster with the primary virtual machine
How to perform “Test Failover”
Open the Hyper-V manager on destination server
Right click on the replica VM > Select “Test Failover”
Click on “Test Failover”.This process will create a new virtual machine based on the revoery point
*Once we test the process we can delete the virtual machine.
Reverse Replication
This action can only be performed at the Replica Virtual Machine. This action is performed to reverse
replicate from Replica to Primary Server
How to perform reverse replication
Open hyper-v manager on destinatio server or where we have performed planned/unplanned failover
Right click on the virtual machine > Select “Replication” >Select “Reverse Replication”
