WHAT IS MEANT

HYDROPHOBICITY??• Hydrophobic = Water Hating• When water hits a hydrophobic surface, it beads.

• The hydrophobic effectrepresents the tendency ofwater to exclude non-polarmolecules. The effectoriginates from the

disruption of highlydynamic hydrogen bonds between molecules ofliquid water.

The Lotus Leaf Effect

The leaves of Lotus plants have theunique ability to avoid gettingdirty.

They are coated with wax crystalsaround 1 nanometer in diameter.

Droplets falling onto the leavesform beads and roll off taking dirtwith them, meaning the leaves areself-cleaning.Sometimes referred to as“The Lotus Leaf effect ”

SELF CLEANING GLASS

How does it work?•

Glass is coated with a layer of nanocrystallinetitanium dioxide (TiO 2). The titanium dioxidereacts to the ultraviolet (UV) component ofsunlight causing a gradual break down andloosening of dirt.

• This is known as the ‘ Photocatalytic ’stage.

THE FUTURE

• Nanotechnology provides new materials thatcould potentially have profound affects on

building design.• For instance, glass can be used more liberally if it

is optically tuned to block heat and UV.

• It would be possible to construct a building withmany more, larger windows than is currentlyviable, since heat can be kept out and UV photo-damaged prevented.
