    WHAT IS MEANT

HYDROPHOBICITY??• Hydrophobic = Water Hating• When water hits a hydrophobic surface, it beads.

    HYDROPHOBIC EFFECT

    • The hydrophobic effectrepresents the tendency ofwater to exclude non-polarmolecules. The effectoriginates from the

disruption of highlydynamic hydrogen bonds between molecules ofliquid water.

    The Lotus Leaf Effect

The leaves of Lotus plants have theunique ability to avoid gettingdirty.

They are coated with wax crystalsaround 1 nanometer in diameter.

Droplets falling onto the leavesform beads and roll off taking dirtwith them, meaning the leaves areself-cleaning.Sometimes referred to as“The Lotus Leaf effect ”

    NANO PARTICLE

    A nanoparticle (ornanopowder or nanocluster

or nanocrystal) is amicroscopic particle with atleast one dimension lessthan 100 nm.

Nanoparticle research iscurrently an area of intensescientific research, due to awide variety of potentialapplications in many fields.

    NANO COATING COMPOSITION

    • Super hydrophobic coatings can be made frommany different materials:

Manganese oxide polystyrene (MnO 2/PS) nanocompositeZinc oxide polystyrene (ZnO/PS) nano-compositePrecipitated calcium carbonateCarbon Nano tube structuresSilica nano-coating

    Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO 2).

    APPLICATIONS

Hydrophobic coatings are being used in

many different areas:• Self cleaning glass• Aerospace• Wood construction• Monument protection• Automobile Cleaning

    SELF CLEANING GLASS

    • Scientists havemimicked natureat the nanoscaleto create glasssurfaces that are

    ‘self -cleaning’like the Lotusleaf.

    SELF CLEANING GLASS

    How does it work?•

Glass is coated with a layer of nanocrystallinetitanium dioxide (TiO 2). The titanium dioxidereacts to the ultraviolet (UV) component ofsunlight causing a gradual break down andloosening of dirt.

    • This is known as the ‘ Photocatalytic ’stage.

Monument Protection• Much of the damage to protected monuments aroundthe world is caused by weather.

    • Using nanotechnology, a protective coating can beapplied to the monuments to

    protect them from theelements.

    • Nanotechnology preventswater from seeping into thecrevices and freezing to causecracks and damage.

    WOOD PROTECTION

    • Wood, when sprayed

with a protectivecoating, will not burn .In the pictures, the boardon the top is burning.

    • The board on thebottom looks to becharred, but the charringscrapes off with ease.

    AERO SPACE

    • Hydrophobic coatingsusing nanotechnology

are helping in theaerospace industry bymaking airplane wingsresistant to water and ice

    coatings.• Many airplane crashes

have been attributed toice on the wings beforeand during flight.

    • hydrophobic nanocoatingcan coated on anautomobile body whichdoesn’t not allow any dirtto deposit on the outer

    body.• Hence cleaning it self

    ADVANTAGES

    • Protects glass from corrosion (acid rain etc.)• Easy application through spraying, polishing,

immersion, smearing etc.• Optically neutral ( colourless, transparent).• UV Protection

    • Stable at varying temperatures.• Low Cleaning and Maintenance requirements.• Retains the quality of surface.• Ecologically beneficial & biologically safe.

    DISADVANTAGES

    • It is very expensive.•

Continuous washing may reduce theconcentration of the coating• Not applicable to food and beverages

    THE FUTURE

    • Nanotechnology provides new materials thatcould potentially have profound affects on

building design.• For instance, glass can be used more liberally if it

is optically tuned to block heat and UV.

    • It would be possible to construct a building withmany more, larger windows than is currentlyviable, since heat can be kept out and UV photo-damaged prevented.
