The RMIT Master Design Studio Hydrophili-city [2] // experimenting beyond type strived to investigate local qualities of Melbourne’s Dock-lands and asked all participants to propose a site-specific architectural intervention on the undevel-oped site of the North Wharf pier.
The Studio was based on an intensive research on the context of the Melbourne Docklands, analyz-ing their given characteristics, structures, behav-iors, and atmospheres, as well as their ecological and economical rationales. Water and the wa-ter’s edge was always in the focus of our work, aiming at encountering new strategic ways for the appropriation of urban water territories. In several exercises the studio participants researched on the heterogeneities in situ, and opened up to the ter-ritorial, cultural, social, political and ecologi-cal forces of the site. All final architectural inter-ventions were based on a hypothesis and design guidelines derived from the research results. The quality and potential of the North Wharf pier and water general is addressed differently in each pro-posal, however, everybody discovered that the surrounding can suggest a template for the built! “The ora of a salt marsh is differentiated into levels according to the plants’ individual tolerance of salinity and water table levels. Vegetation found at the water must be able to survive high salt concentrations, periodical submersion, and a certain amount of water movement, while plants further inland in the marsh can sometimes experience dry, low-nutrient conditions.Salt marshes are quite photo synthetically active and are extremely productive habitats. They serve as depositories for a large amount of organic matter and are full of decomposition, which feeds a broad food chain of organisms from bacteria to mam-mals. Many of the halophytic plants such as cordgrass are not grazed at all by higher animals but die off and decompose to become food for micro-organisms, which in turn become food for sh and birds.”
“The East Asian - Australasian Flyway is one of the world’s great yways. At its northernmost it stretches eastwards from the Taimyr Peninsula in Russia to Alaska. Its southern end encompasses Australia, particularly Victoria State, and New Zealand. Between these extremes the Flyway covers much of eastern Asia, includ-ing China, Japan, Korea, South-East Asia and the western Paci c. It is especially important for the millions of migratory waders or shorebirds that breed in northern Asia and Alaska and spend the non-breeding season in South-East Asia and Australasia. In to-tal, the yway passes through 22 countries with approximately 55 migratory species travelling along it, equating to about 5 million birds.Shorebirds are among the most impressive migrant waterbirds in the world and can be found in shallow water at both coastal and inland wetlands. They include plovers, sandpipers, curlews and snipe.Migratory shorebirds use the summers of both southern and northern hemispheres to conduct their life cycle. During their non-breeding phase they inhabit the southern hemisphere in ocks, arriving in Australia in October and feeding mainly on small crea-tures living in mud ats. In April, these birds y from their Australian feeding grounds to breed in the tundra areas of the northern hemi-sphere, such as the Russian Far East and Alaska. They nest on the ground, with their brown and russet breeding plumage providing camou age against predators.
Prior to the recent formation of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership and its Flyway Site Network, a program was launched in March 1996 in response to the need for international action to protect migratory shorebirds along the East Asian - Australasian Flyway. The East Asian - Australasian shorebird site network linked wetlands that are interna-tionally important for shorebirds.The shorebird site network played an important role in highlighting the importance of wetland areas for shorebirds and promoted activities for their conservation. The network encour-aged site managers to establish a local advisory or liaison group and develop management plans, which helped gain support for the management of these sites for conservation. The network also helped site owners, managers, local people and participating organizations to gain international recognition and support for their site and their conservation efforts.The network was an international cooperative effort supported by both governments and non-government organizations. The 31 sites that joined the network across 10 countries have since been transferred to the new East Asian-Australasian Flyway Site Network, which will continue to support this important conservation effort well into the future.”

The proposed site has no rules or intentions of usage and people are unsure on how to oc-cupy the space. Thus, the North Wharf in the Docklands needs to be given a greater sense of ownership, without too specific rules. Our intentions are to blur and interweave move-ments and boundaries between activities, as well as, the threshold between water and land. Our proposal, the RMIT school of fine arts, occupies the whole North Wharf pier. Adja-cent to the campus, The Melbourne Museum of Art is placed along the end of the pier as well as small retail and cafes to encourage a diverse group of people to visit the site. The school sprawls across the pier, linked through movement as well as the spatial needs of the students. The program evolved through the need to create a greater sense of culture and art in the Docklands and to encourage and attract more attention from the local community.

The design process involved continuous operations by addition, subtraction, and alteration of a grid system to densify the site and create individual moments. The process was based on site analysis and research, social interaction and site conditions such as wind, sun, and atmospheric qualities which created a site specific proposal. The final architectural inter-vention is based in the notion of threshold and how architectural threshold can be used to create a notion of discovery within the site as well as a slow transition and reconnecting the inhabitants to the site through creating personal experiences. The project sets up a blended dialogue throughout the site between program, landscape and waterscape; and we seek to create a more diverse appeal, attracting more Melbournians, and more importantly, at a higher frequency and for a longer duration.

The compilation of the conducted research in the area of the North Wharf pier and an awareness of the architectural and social conversation regarding the existing Docklands development has lead me to the following conclusions:1. Any new development within the Docklands area should embody the qualities of Melbourne. Quality of space, intimacy, warmth, texture, intensity, and scale. // 2. Due to it being a central site with easy access to the CBD and major highways, it should be used to contribute to the goals of Melbourne 2030, as such the site should consist largely of high density residential dwellings. // 3. There should also be a wide range of commercial and recreational activities within the site. In order to become successful it needs to create its own community with a self generating/perpetuating level of intensity and activity. //

Initially i thought the idea of living in the docklands could be quite cool. there was a great opportunity for exploration in design, architecture that could make it a really good environment to live in. However, after nearly a decade of development i would choose not to live in the docklands for several reasons....
Parkland (ie green space and a 'place to relax/study in nature' ), availability of public transport.
Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).
Green streets, quite, close but separated. People/community, close to parks.
No, it's too commercial and has lost its character.No, it's too expensiveNo way! it's a wasteland! No escape from the city and it's too windy. I would want a backyard or a park somewhere close...No, there is no community thereNo, there's no yards and it's not really suitable for a young family.I wouldn't mind living in Docklands, if I was wealthy enough to own a flat there as well as the house in Jacana - it would be great to have a crash pad so to speak in the city for action weekends. I wouldn't be into living there all the time as I like space and a backyard.
No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No, has no character.No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.
From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale
I wouldn't want to live in the docklands because the only available living form is apartments. I don't like apartments and I really don't like new apartments, they're badly built and made of crappy cement sheeting. I would love to live in the Docklands but perhaps not later on when/if I have a family and pets etc. I imagine it is better suited for young people and DINKS (double income no kids). It has restaurants and cafes at your doorstep and it is so close to the city which is very attractive to me.

Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).
Green streets, quite, close but separated. People/community, close to parks.

No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No, has no character.No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.
From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale

Initially i thought the idea of living in the docklands could be quite cool. there was a great opportunity for exploration in design, architecture that could make it a really good environment to live in. However, after nearly a decade of development i would choose not to live in the docklands for several reasons....
Parkland (ie green space and a 'place to relax/study in nature' ), availability of public transport.
Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).
Green streets, quite, close but separated. People/community, close to parks.

No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No, has no character.No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.
From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale
I wouldn't want to live in the docklands because the only available living form is apartments. I don't like apartments and I really don't like new apartments, they're badly built and made of crappy cement sheeting. I reckon the sealants in the bathrooms are also really crappy, the ceiling would start to leak after the 59th shower the person living above you had

I would love to live in the Docklands but perhaps not later on when/if I have a family and pets etc. I imagine it is better suited for young people and DINKS (double income no kids). It has restaurants and cafes at your doorstep and it is so close to the city which is very attractive to me.

Initially i thought the idea of living in the docklands could be quite cool. there was a great opportunity for exploration in design, architecture that could make it a really good environment to live in. However, after nearly a decade of development i would choose not to live in the docklands for several reasons....
Parkland (ie green space and a 'place to relax/study in nature' ), availability of public transport.
Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).

No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No, has no character.No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.
From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale
I wouldn't want to live in the docklands because the only available living form is apartments. I don't like apartments and I really don't like new apartments, they're badly built and made of crappy cement sheeting. I reckon the sealants in the bathrooms are also really crappy, the ceiling would start to leak after the 59th shower the person living above you had

I would love to live in the Docklands but perhaps not later on when/if I have a family and pets etc. I imagine it is better suited for young people and DINKS (double income no kids). It has restaurants and cafes at your doorstep and it is so close to the city which is very attractive to me.

Initially i thought the idea of living in the docklands could be quite cool. there was a great opportunity for exploration in design, architecture that could make it a really good environment to live in. However, after nearly a decade of development i would choose not to live in the docklands for several reasons....
Parkland (ie green space and a 'place to relax/study in nature' ), availability of public transport.
Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).
Green streets, quite, close but separated. People/community, close to parks.

No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No, has no character.No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.
From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale
I wouldn't want to live in the docklands because the only available living form is apartments. I don't like apartments and I really don't like new apartments, they're badly built and made of crappy cement sheeting. I reckon the sealants in the bathrooms are also really crappy, the ceiling would start to leak after the 59th shower the person living above you had

Part of me would like to live at the docklands so i could see and use more of the culture that Melbourne has too offer and the close proximity to work. I would love to live in the Docklands but perhaps not later on when/if I have a family and pets etc. I imagine it is better suited for young people and DINKS (double income no kids). It has restaurants and cafes at your doorstep and it is so close to the city which is very attractive to me.

The scale of the buildings are too large given building proximity and with respect to human scale. Not enough active street frontage and no reason to stay in the area. Initially i thought the idea of living in the docklands could be quite cool. there was a great opportunity for exploration in design, architecture that could make it a really good environment to live in. However, after nearly a decade of development i would choose not to live in the docklands for several reasons....
Parkland (ie green space and a 'place to relax/study in nature' ), availability of public transport.
Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).
Green streets, quite, close but separated. People/community, close to parks.

No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No, has no character.No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.
From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale
I wouldn't want to live in the docklands because the only available living form is apartments. I don't like apartments and I really don't like new apartments, they're badly built and made of crappy cement sheeting. I reckon the sealants in the bathrooms are also really crappy, the ceiling would start to leak after the 59th shower the person living above you had

Part of me would like to live at the docklands so i could see and use more of the culture that Melbourne has too offer and the close proximity to work. I would love to live in the Docklands but perhaps not later on when/if I have a family and pets etc. I imagine it is better suited for young people and DINKS (double income no kids). It has restaurants and cafes at your doorstep and it is so close to the city which is very attractive to me.

Initially i thought the idea of living in the docklands could be quite cool. there was a great opportunity for exploration in design, architecture that could make it a really good environment to live in. However, after nearly a decade of development i would choose not to live in the docklands for several reasons....

Lifestyle, small business that contribute to the community (eg local butcher, small cafe, etc).

No, because i work mostly in geelong. When i do work in Melbourne close access to freeways is important. I don't think the docklands area can provide parking for work vehicles and easy access to major freeways.

No, has no character.No thanks - from my experiences (which have been limited) it lacks trees and gardens and I find the first stage of the development dated and isolating (wind tunnels etc) nothing seems to link and the sports stadium & the railway station seem to separate docklands from the city - the railway line in particular does not appear to address the docklands side.
From quick viewing the central, business district of docklands appears to engage more with "Melbourne", smaller streets, laneways, better building street connections and scale
I wouldn't want to live in the docklands because the only available living form is apartments. I don't like apartments and I really don't like new apartments, they're badly built and made of crappy cement sheeting. I reckon the sealants in the bathrooms are also really crappy, the ceiling would start to leak after the 59th shower the person living above you had

Part of me would like to live at the docklands so i could see and use more of the culture that Melbourne has too offer and the close proximity to work. I would love to live in the Docklands but perhaps not later on when/if I have a family and pets etc. I imagine it is better suited for young people and DINKS (double income no kids). It has restaurants and cafes at your doorstep and it is so close to the city which is very attractive to me.

Nationwide, the whole eastern coast line of Australia has become very dry. Therefore, we have developed a strong interest in water re-utilization. Learning from several precedents for ecological systems we have decided to use the Seawater Greenhouse and a landscape filtering system as our main parts of a new livable ecosystem. In order to implement these ideas into North Wharf pier, we have started a precise calculation on the amount of water being produced by a Seater Greenhouse on our site. We have learned that this greenhouse would produce more fresh water than it would utilize for the production of crops. Thus, we introduce residential units as part of our ecosystem. The master planning of the whole systems is determined by the rate of freshwater production and how many residences it can support. In the end, our whole proposal is a self-sustaining system in regards to water.

Water distribution and division. Amount of sea water and rainwater could be used in a few different areas. In the end, we could achieve, 24,025 Liter of crops, 318 people living on site without any external water source and 6171 m2 of Landscape as open public space.

The Seawater Greenhouse produces crops, fresh water and cool air, which can be utilized for human consumption. The systems works with seawater taken from the harbour, which is then channeled to the greenhouse to cool down the building, and is then returned back to the sea. The fresh water that is distilled out from a condenser in the greenhouse, is then used for irrigation of the crops and placed at disposal for residential consumption. Any surplus water is stored in containers. The rainwater that falls on the site is filtered by the landscape and stored underneath the pier. The Seawater Greenhouse has operable win-dows, which allow the cool air produced by the greenhouse to be passed onto the residen-tial block behind it in summer time. To conclude, Greenhouse+Park+Apartment is a new building typology which can significantly contribute to a sustainable future in Melbourne.

This gap in the side of the pool will allow water from the harbour to �ow into the pools at high tide and bring in new water to clean and also allow cleansed water to �ow out.
