Why Do We Need a New FuelSource?

Currently our machinery runs on oil

Oil pollutes and there are limited supplies

Hydrogen is the most abundant elementin the known universe

Hydrogen fuel cells do not pollute

How A Hydrogen Fuel Cell Works

The fuel cell is composed of ananode, an electrolytemembrane in the center, and acathode.

Hydrogen flows into the fuelcell anode. Platinum coatingon the anode helps to separatethe gas into hydrogen ions andelectrons. The electrolytemembrane allows only theprotons to pass through themembrane to the cathode sideof the fuel cell. The electronscannot pass through this

membrane and flow through anexternal circuit in the form ofelectric current.

    Where Will Hydrogen ComeFrom?

Hydrogen is not readily available forconsumer use yet.

To get around this problem, hydrogen willbe extracted from other, moreconventional types of fuels by a devicecalled a reformer.

A fuel like natural gas is reformed intohydrogen which will then go on to powera fuel cell.

    Where Will Hydrogen ComeFrom?

Natural gas comes from mostly the US,so even before the switch to purehydrogen is made, we will get our fuel

    domestically.

Natural gas production could peak by2025

    Hydrogen in the Home and

Office Hydrogen fuel cells will power and heat

    homes and offices.

Hopefully this will start in about 10 years. The hydrogen will come from natural gas

that has gone through a reformer. Hydrogen cars can be refueled in the

garage by a hydrogen powered house.

Much of the worldsand Americas oil

    comes from the

    Middle East. This is an

    incredibly volatile

    region. Oil runs the

    economy in thesecountries

Hydrogen fuel cells mean a decreasedneed for Middle Eastern oil.

Decreased imports by the US means adecreased military presence in theMiddle East.

Possible economic collapse in main oilexporting nations and in places like SaudiArabia, this could lead to revolution.

Possible no-win situation for the US.

    Conclusion

Hydrogen fuel cells will dramaticallychange our cars, how are homes andbusinesses are powered and heated, and

it both positively and negatively changeplaces like the Middle East and thirdworld countries. They will also clean up

    the worlds air.
