MARCELLUS SHALE

• Is a unit of marine sedimentary rock found in Eastern West America • Was created in the

Devonian Era • Good for agriculture • Natural gasses are

trapped (on the pores)

WHAT IS HYDROFRAKING?

• The process of extracting natural gasses by drilling on the shale rock • Using pressurized “Fracking

Fluids” (which are really chemical fluids), it creates a crack on the shale which allows the natural gas to flow from the rock into the wellbore at economic rates.

SO… WHAT ARE FRACKING FLUIDS (CHEMICAL FLUIDS)

• A combination on water and thousands od different chemicals • Water

chemicals • 4.5-5 million gallons over

50,000 gallons • WHICH CHEMICALS?• Benzene, Toulene, Ethylbenzene,

Xylene, Dioxin, Cyclohexane, and many many many many more (….., etc, many)

WHAT’S SO WRONG WITH HYDROFRACKING?

• the release of radioactive materials into the environment • it can also contaminate our surface water

(drinking water) • it can deplete rivers and streams which can affect

our water supply • Leaking into ground water (remember the chemicals we mentioned before… yeahh….)

…..SO THE GOOD NEWS ARE:

• It can create many jobs • It can fix our economy• Ummm create energy• Ummm what else…. It

helps • the government?

WHAT CAN WE DO?• There are many campaigns against

hydrofracking you can join one ( NYPIRG, NYS- DEC) • You can leave comments on rdGEIS- which is a

document that lays out a plan for permitting hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” in the State.
