    Working Safely

    This involves a number of factors;

    Management commitment and employeeinvolvement

Worksite safety analysis Hazard identification and controls

Health and safety training and orientation

    Employee Involvement(responsibilities)

    Understand your responsibilities

You are responsible for your safety and that ofothers who may be affected by what you do oromit

It is the responsibility of the employee tocooperate with the employer in maintaining a safeworkplace/site

Report all accidents, injury, near misses, ill-healthand perceived hazardous situations and acts totheir supervisor or safety officer

Use provided PPEs in the right way

    Worksite Hazard Identification

Manual handling This involves lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing

This could become a source of hazard on site ifmanual handling is not done the proper way

If manual handling is a must, it should be donethe proper way

    Controls

    Eliminate manual handling altogether

Ask for help if object is too heavy

    Carry objects the right way

    Worksite Hazard Identification

    Poor housekeeping

This simply means not placing equipments andmaterials where they are supposed to beleaving them littered around the work area

    Poor housekeeping could pose;

    Trip and fall hazards

    Fire hazard

    Worksite Hazard Identification

    Controls

The work area should be kept free of equipmentsand materials

Keep work station tidy and clean at all times

    Worksite Hazard Identification

    Toxic gas

    Hydrogen Sulphide (H S)

    Possible at the dehydration plant

    Very poisonous

Rotten egg smell High concentration deadens sense of smell

    Controls

Be alert to the rotten egg smell of Hydrogen

    Sulphide

When the Hydrogen Sulphide alarm is sounded, move in the opposite direction of the wind

    Heavy moving machines/vehicles

    Cranes

    Forklifts

    Buses Vans

    Bicycles

    Controls

    Walk on designated pedestrian walkways

Listen out to the reverse alarm of heavy movingvehicles

    Worksite Hazard Identification

    Snakes and Insects

Snakes are common at this time of the year

Snakes and insects hide in cracks and crevices

They could also be found within stacked materialsand equipments

    Worksite Hazard Identification

    Controls

Make noise to scare away snakes, insects andother reptiles before going into a work area wherethey could be found

If a snake is spotted, leave it to crawl away

Should a worker be beaten, the victim should notpanic

First aid should be administered and victim takenfor professional medical attention

Use appropriate PPE when working in snakeprone areas

    The Safety Culture

The safety culture is our individual and corporateattitude towards safety.

    To have a good safety culture;

    1. All recommended control measures, safety rulesand procedures must be adhered to

    2. PPEs must be used

    3. Continuous training/awareness Keep saying it
