Understand your responsibilities

You are responsible for your safety and that ofothers who may be affected by what you do oromit

It is the responsibility of the employee tocooperate with the employer in maintaining a safeworkplace/site

Report all accidents, injury, near misses, ill-healthand perceived hazardous situations and acts totheir supervisor or safety officer

This could become a source of hazard on site ifmanual handling is not done the proper way

If manual handling is a must, it should be donethe proper way

Eliminate manual handling altogether

Ask for help if object is too heavy

Carry objects the right way

This simply means not placing equipments andmaterials where they are supposed to beleaving them littered around the work area

Poor housekeeping could pose;

Trip and fall hazards

Fire hazard

Possible at the dehydration plant

Very poisonous

Rotten egg smell High concentration deadens sense of smell

Controls

Be alert to the rotten egg smell of Hydrogen

Sulphide

When the Hydrogen Sulphide alarm is sounded,move in the opposite direction of the wind

Walk on designated pedestrian walkways

Listen out to the reverse alarm of heavy movingvehicles

Snakes and Insects

Snakes are common at this time of the year

Snakes and insects hide in cracks and crevices

They could also be found within stacked materialsand equipments

Controls

Make noise to scare away snakes, insects andother reptiles before going into a work area wherethey could be found

If a snake is spotted, leave it to crawl away

Should a worker be beaten, the victim should notpanic

First aid should be administered and victim takenfor professional medical attention

Use appropriate PPE when working in snakeprone areas
