We started taking measurements by starting as closer as we could to the factory and all the way out of the artificial river until our robot reached the sea.

The most exciting of all was that the factory, after they noticed our presence there and with the helping hand of Media, tried to minimize the problem. They placed pieces of polystyrene in order to give water time to cool.

The highest temperature of the water was 25OC while the temperature of the atmoshpere was 12OC.

We took measurements for a second time and the results were the same. So we didn’t have any doupt for the measurements.

Then the research continued in the open sea with the boat of the Aegean University and the assist of the Pr. Zervakis and Pr. Krasakopoulou.

First of all with special sensors-detectors we found the flow of the water. That would help us drive the Hydrobot.

11

Page 12: HYDROBOT. Water project 2016 Experimental High School of Mytilene of Aegean University

We also collected water with suitable equipment.

12

Futhermore we collected Posidonia and other plants and rocks to help us understand the biodiversity of the area.

Finally our robot got to work and we started taking more measurements.

In the examination of the results helped Pr. Zervakis, who was very interested about the quality of water in the area.

When we drew the graph of the results we noticed that in some places the temperature of the water was very high.

The graph of the second measurements was also the same. We had also 3 to 4 places that the temperature was high.

After a discuss we had with the fishermen there they told us that it was known that the water there was warm. We asked why and the just point us the coast. They explained us that there are 2 gazers in the water coming from the old Hot Springs (we found 3-4). In the photo you can see the ruins of the thermal spings.

Conclusions:•The “hot” water from the factory ( 25OC) doesn’t seem to effect the ecosystem when in 50m from the coast the water’s temperature was 50-60OC.

•The fact that there were fish very short to the mouth of the river indicates that there is no pollution problem.

•Water also cools because of the the currents that there are too many in that area.

•We notice that the water was very clear, more than normal, so we guess that the nutrients and the metals were less or even there aren’t any of them. 19

• The high temperature of the water in the sea shows that the ecosystem adapted to environment

2nd action. This year we continue our project with our upgrated Hydrobot. With bigger engines, a digital camera and more experience, our little machine is ready for more!

3rd action.Οur research extended with another creation that we build on our own. We build a stereoscope, which can be used only if you have a Smartphone or a tablet. The aim of that build was to help us detect some micro-organisms that can almost be seen with naked eye.
