In an effort to routinely achieve sub ppt levels of detection for mercury, analysts around the globe are turning to cold vapor atomic fluorescence (CVAF) instrumentation from Teledyne Leeman Labs. We offer two CVAF – based instruments to meet your needs; the Hydra IIAF

and the Hydra IIAF Gold .

While the Hydra IIAF and Hydra IIAF Gold share a similar architecture (see Figures 1a and 1b) they are designed to address different methodologies and provide significantly different detection capabilities. The Hydra IIAF , with its direct fluorescence detection, provides adetection limit of 0.1 ppt, a dynamic range of over five orders of magnitude and exceptional stability. This system is designed to meet the requirements of EPA Method 245.7 and European Standard EN-13506. On the other hand, the Hydra IIAF Gold , with its ability to preconcentratemercury prior to analysis, is capable of achieving a detection limit well below 0.05 ppt and is fully compliant with EPA methods 1631E and 245.7as well as European Standards EN-13506 and EN-12338. Page 6 provides an overview of the benefits that are common to both the Hydra IIAF

and Hydra IIAF Gold. Page 7 provides an overview of the benefits that are unique to the Hydra IIAF Gold.

Introducing the World’s Most Sensitive Mercury Analyzers –the Hydra IIAF and Hydra IIAF Gold

Figure 1a. Hydra IIAF schematic diagram. Sample and reductant are pumped tothe gas/liquid separator where mercury is reduced to metallic vapor. Argon carries mercury vapor through the 2-stage dryer while liquid is pumped to waste. With theHydra IIAF the mercury vapor proceeds directly to the fluorescence cell for detection –in accordance with EPA Method 245.7 and EN-13506.

Figure 1b. Hydra IIAF Gold schematic diagram. The Hydra IIAF Gold uses the sameprocess as the Hydra IIAF for EPA Method 245.7 as well as preconcentrating Hg on a gold amalgamation system prior to detection – in accordance with EPA Method 1631E and EN-12338.

The Clean Water Act requires that individual states achieve “safe concentrations” for many

pollutants, including mercury in waters. The National Toxics rule defines the “safe” level for

mercury as low as 1.3 ppt, about 200 times lower than the reporting limit for EPA method 245.1

which uses Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption (CVAA).

ACHIEVE LOWER DETECTION AND REPORTING LIMITS

Advanced Fluorescence Detection System. Both configurations ofthe Hydra IIAF incorporate a proprietary wide angle fluorescencedetector for the ultimate in sensitivity. This detector is designed withtangential gas flow for rapid equilibration and washout of Hg vapor; andfurther, it delivers a detection limit of 0.1 ppt without preconcentrationand well under 0.05 ppt with preconcentration.

DON’T GET DERAILED BY SAMPLES WITH HIGH MERCURY CONTENT

Over-Range Protection. One consideration important to commercialtesting labs is the potential for instrument contamination from sampleswith unexpectedly high concentrations of Hg. Such samples can wreakhavoc on instruments without an over–range protection system andcan lead to long and expensive decontamination procedures. This isespecially challenging for purge and trap instruments. Both the Hydra IIAF and Hydra IIAF Gold include over–range protection.

• With the Hydra IIAF , the instrument continually monitors the rateof change in signal for each new sample and then automaticallypredicts over-range conditions before system contamination can occur.

• With the Hydra IIAF Gold , the system performs a brief prescreenof each sample without preconcentration and then allows furtheranalysis only for those samples which are deemed safe (sampleswith concentrations below a user selectable set point).

Smart Rinse. Hydra IIAF also provides a smart rinse function whichhelps to ensure accurate measurements and is especially useful withthe over-range protection mode mentioned above.

RUN MORE SAMPLES WITH LESS LABOR

High Capacity Autosampler. In an effort to free your analyst forother tasks during periods of high sample loading, the Hydra IIAF

employs a high capacity autosampler that holds up to 270 samples. Its175 ml QC reservoirs ensure ample volume for continuing QC checks(e.g., CCV, CCB, OPR) during long sample runs.

RUN DIFFICULT SAMPLES WITHOUT COMPLICATIONS

High Performance Gas/Liquid Separator. Hydra II’s innovative, serpentine gas/liquid separator provides high throughput for routinesamples, superior analytical recoveries forcomplex or poorly digested samples andexceptional resistance to contaminationfrom difficult or foaming samples. Theresult is more robust operation, betterdata quality and increased productivity.

Filtered Autosampler Probe. Hydra’sfiltered sample probe excludes particulatesfrom the liquid stream to ensure the analyticalrobustness needed for long periods of unattended operation.

ELIMINATE WATER VAPOR FOR BETTER STABILITY

Method Compliant Vapor Dryer. Water vapor interferes with themeasurement of Hg by atomic fluorescence. For this reason a highperformance gas phase drying system is essential to instrument performance. EPA methods 245.7 and 1631E each recommend specificgas phase dryers; soda lime for Method 1631E and counterflowNafion® for 245.7. The soda lime dryer eliminates any condensationand protects the gold trap from haloacid vapors such as HCl or HBr.The membrane dryer then removes all traces of water vapor from the gas stream before it reaches the fluorescence cell. Hydra IIincorporates both dryers delivering method compliance, long-termstability, and higher sensitivity.

Benefits found in both the Hydra IIAF and Hydra IIAF Gold

Calibration plot in direct fluorescence mode from 1 ppt to 100 ppb demonstrating adynamic range in excess of 5 orders of magnitude.

A wide variety of commercially available sample cups are supported to achieve maximum productivity and to ensure compatibility with your lab’s digestion vessels.

REPORT MERCURY AT CONCENTRATIONS FROM SUB PPT TOHIGH PPB LEVELS

With preconcentration the Hydra IIAF Gold achieves a MethodDetection Limit1 (MDL) of less than 0.05 ppt and easily satisfies theaccuracy requirement of the sub–ppt Report Limit1 standard inmethod 1631E; which is 0.5 ppt +/- 23%.

MEET LOW DETECTION LEVELS WITH LESS SAMPLE

The exceptional sensitivity of Hydra IIAF Gold allows it to meet theQC requirements of method 1631E using much less sample thanwas possible with earlier generation instruments. This means shorteranalysis times (2-3 minutes per sample) as well as the ability to fitmore samples (up to 180) into an automated run. The net result issuperior productivity for today’s busy laboratory.

COMPLY WITH BOTH EPA METHOD 245.7 AND 1631E

Not only is the Hydra IIAF Gold compliant with all the hardwarerequirements of Methods 1631E and 245.7, it is also compliantwith all the QC requirements of the methods. From its gold amalgamation trap and soda lime dryer to its software which automatically calculates “System Blanks1” and “CalibrationFactors1”, the Hydra IIAF Gold provides the user with an ideal platform for performing low level Hg determinations.

UNIQUE OVER-RANGE PROTECTION WITH PRECONCENTRATION

The Hydra IIAF Gold offers a fast, simple over-range protection system to ensure your productivity. When the purge and trapapproach is being used, over-range protection is accomplished byusing the fluorescence system without preconcentration to performa brief prescreen of each sample and then allowing further analysis only for those samples which are deemed safe (i.e. samples with concentrations below a user selectable set point).

ON-SITE CERTIFICATION ASSISTANCE FOR METHOD 1631E.

In addition to providing installation by a factory trained engineer,Leeman Labs offers an optional 1631E Certification Assistance program wherein an applications specialist will spend two days inyour lab to assist your personnel in the subtleties of meeting therequirements of EPA method 1631E (this includes site evaluation and recommendations).

Calibration Details. The Calibration display provides a choice of several calibration curvefits including EPA’s required Calibration Factor (CF) algorithm. When the CF algorithm is chosen, the curve’squality control details appear including CF %RSD, System Blank concentration, and Report Limit recovery.

The figure above shows the stability of an on-going precision and recovery standard (OPR) collected over an 8-hour working day. Method 1631E requires a5 ppt OPR standard be analyzed with every batch of samples (20 maximum).
