CURRENT PROJECTS AT THE INSTITUE FOR APPLICABLE MATHEMATICS AND
INFORMATION SCIENCES• Design and implementation of a Students Careers
Management System Generator• Digital Library and annotated bibliography on the “Indian
Contribution to Modern Science” Astronomy, Grammar, Mathematics, Medicine are the traditional topics, Informatics, as the general science of effective computation and not as mere technological tool, is the novel perspective
• Digital platforms for collections: e.g. art, science– Virtual Museums– Virtual Laboratories
• Intelligent Portals for Industry-Academia interaction: internships, technology transfer
• Digital Science and Technology Parks
![Page 23: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The Problem of e-contents for cultural dissemination
• Turing Thesis applies to computable functions• Is there an analogue for cognitive experiences such as
those arising in art, learning, or in developing intuitions and skills?
• OUR TENET: Digital portals enhance significantly the dissemination, fruition, pooling, ultimately the experience, albeit virtual, of Collections, whether these be of artistic items, other artifacts, science experiments, etc
• Collections are extremely expressive of a given culture and worldview, and hence an excellent medium for cross-cultural dissemination, awareness and fertilization
![Page 24: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Issues and Challenges in e-Contents
• How do we digitize homogeneously, heterogenous specimens?
• Which metadata are appropriate?
– Books, and other written documents– Pictures, videos, …– Music and sound documents – Other pluridimensional artworks (e.g. sculptures, pottery,
carpets, …)– Artifacts (uses)– Processes (e.g. dance, cooking, …)– Traditions– Knowledge (traditional medicine)– …
![Page 25: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Issues and Challenges in e-Contents • How do we render the object’s:
– History– Context in which it was produced and preserved– Use– …
• How can we take advantage of Immersive VR in order to restore or repair the object?
• How can we take advantage of Immersive VR in order to interact with the object?
• How can we take advantage on personalized intelligent filtering tools?
• …
![Page 26: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Results: E-Dwara PORTAL
The various prototype and experimental portals and platformsdeveloped in the project have been merged in the
E-Dvara PORTAL
• Interactive• Immersive VR• Accessible• Customisable, flexible, extendable• Multimedia• Open• Featuring intelligent filtering tools to overcome cognitive
discomfort disorienting and information overloading
![Page 27: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Perspectives
• Experiment, validate, disseminate, customise the portal among the various communities of developers and end-users currently involved in the projects:– for enhancing cross-cultural awareness, e.g.
building virtual analogues of museums, collections at the University of Udine and B.M.Birla Science Centre
– for enhancing the mission of the IIAMIS both in education, research and technology transfer
![Page 28: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Perspectives
• The roots of Informatics in Indian linguistics – after Euclid and Panini by Frits Staal
![Page 29: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)

A Computational investigation of Panini Astādhyāyī
• Sutra 6.1.77: iKo yaN aCi• Intended meaning: “i, u, r, and l are
replaced by y,v,r,l respectively, in uninterrupted speech, if a heterogenous vowel follows”
• E.g. sandhi– Dadhi atra dadhyatra– Madhu atra madhvatra
![Page 31: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
A Informatics investigation of Panini Astādhyāyī
• iK denotes the list i u r l • yaN denotes the list ya va ra la • aC denotes vowels• All rules up to a given marker apply to the
context “in uninterrupted speech”• An earlier rule explicitly mentions
“homogenous vowels”, so the context which applies is that of heterogenous vowels
![Page 32: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
A Informatics investigation of Panini Astādhyāyī
• List processing • Static scoping “in uninterrupted speech”• Nesting of contexts “if a heterogenous
vowel follows”– A previous rule explicitly mentioned
homogeneous vowels– Pānini: in case of conflict as to which rule
applies the rule to apply is the last
![Page 33: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
A Informatics investigation of Panini Astādhyāyī
• Substitution
iK is replaced by yaN if aC follows
iK+ gen yaN + nom aC + loc
N[x/M] iK aC[iK/yaN]
![Page 34: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Final Comments
• Both Euclid and Panini highly valued simplicity, optimality, independence and self-consistency in their systems
• Panini made use of at least two metalevels
– Rules for deriving rules– Implementing rules
![Page 35: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
Final Comments
• What can be said about data compression in Panini?
• Are Panini’s sutras influenced by mnemotechnics?
• Both Euclid and Panini– did not adress time related issues– address subject matters which ultimately
formalize some intution or skill, be it language or geometry, which are somewhat innate or capable of becoming non directly conscious
– Euclids appears more abstract
![Page 36: Hyderabad-Pune, Aug 29 – 2 Sept, 2005 4 th INDO-ITALIAN WEEK on New Perspectives in IT and Applications.](https://reader037.fdocuments.net/reader037/viewer/2022110116/55144d3f550346284e8b4f5e/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)

A case for non-technological skills in IT-enabled activities
• Before hardware innovation we need innovation in mentality and consequently in the software design
• Simplification, reorganization, reengineering, reinventing
• Goal is bridging distance, non-hierarchical structures, interactive
• Standards, codes • in Udine we are (preparing to) form such human,
social, design skills
