Protecting the Environment

The Victaulic Vortex® System is completely friendly to the environment, utilising no toxic agents and has been identified by the Environmental Protection Agency as having a Global Warming Potential of zero.

System Downtime & Reset

Beyond room integrity and environmental concerns, the full life-cycle of a system must be considered, including the cost and complexity of system reset after a discharge. In many cases, agent storage cylinders need to be returned to the manufacturer for refill with proprietary agents or removed from the system for weighing, costly in both time and money. Facility owners and operators who are focused on minimising facility downtime are in need of more time and cost-effective solutions.

Also, since the Vortex® system only requires water and pure nitrogen, storage bottles can be quickly and cost-effectively refilled on site or cylinders can be replaced by a local gas supplier. This minimises system and facility downtime, increasing productivity and profit. The system can be designed to receive water piped in or stored in a portable tank. De-ionized water is recommended for systems where energised electrical equipment is in the hazard space to minimise potential conductivity.

VORTEX® SYSTEM BENEFITS & FEATURES

• As little as 0.98 LPM of water per emitter discharged• 100% green design• No delay in activation to evacuate personnel to avoid a toxic environment• Zero need for maintenance of room integrity• Simple, modular system design for easy installation and maintenance• Easy portability for facility relocations or renovations• Compatible with all fire alarm systems• The Victaulic Vortex® system utilises an active release system to discharge nitrogen upon activation.• Simple, low-maintenance piping• Easy access to cylinders for refill and inspection• Zoneable, scalable, expandable design• Design flexibility for both new construction builds and retrofitting existing spaces.• No need for annual enclosure integrity testing.

THE SYSTEM

The average Victaulic Vortex® droplet size is around 10 microns and the minimal amount of water released per emitter — 1 litre per minute — virtually eliminates any wetting in a space.

The system uses 97% less water than high pressure water mist systems. For example, a space the size of two football fields can be protected by a system that activates immediately to extinguish a high hazard fire with around 11 litres of water in lessthan four minutes.

Unlike other combined agent systems, the Victaulic Vortex® hybrid system utilises both nitrogen and water as complementary extinguishing agents.

For smaller fires, the Victaulic Vortex® system utilises nitrogen as the primary extinguishing agent, where combustion cannot be sustained, however life is sustainable.

In larger fires, the water mist is more effective, cooling the fire by absorbing the heat and reducing the available oxygen. In fact, the

heat-absorbing water droplet surface area is 90 times greater than that of any standard sprinkler system, providing maximum heat absorption efficiency.

Enclosure Integrity

Unlike many other types of fire protection systems, Victaulic Votex® does not require complete room integrity to maintain the active extinguishing atmosphere. Sealing a room to meet specified leak rates can be a large and costly challenge for facility owners and contractors.

Since the system discharges with high velocity under low pressure, the hybrid suspension swirls through the space, overpowering the fire plume and does not require room integrity to remain effective. Since the system does not require room integrity to remain effective, this additional construction or retrofit cost can be avoided.

This not only means that annual enclosure integrity fan testing is not required, there is also no need for provision of any pressure relief venting.

“The homogeneous mixture of water droplets and nitrogen molecules are discharged with enough energy to overcome the drag effect that has limited the effectiveness of traditional water mist systems.”

Vortex® Hybrid Water Mist Systems

Victaulic Vortex® hybrid technology extinguishes via heat absorption and oxygen deprivation with minimal water presence.
