Isolation of the bearing studs by length allows for a blend of stud

grades providing for reduction in cost. To date, no projects have

experienced placement of stud in the wrong location.

708.4 Continuity: Fire partitions shall extend from the top of the foundation or floor/ceiling assembly below to the

underside of the floor or roof sheathing, slab or deck above or to the fire-resistance-rated floor/ceiling or roof/ceiling

assembly above, and shall be securely attached thereto. If the partitions are not continuous to the sheathing, deck or slab

above shall be fireblocked and draftstopped in accordance with Sections 717.2 and 717.3 at the partition line. The supporting

construction shall be protected to afford the required fire-resistance rating of the walls supported, except for tenant and sleeping

unit separation walls and corridor walls in buildings of Types IIB, IIIB and VB construction.

717.2.1.1 Batts or blankets of mineral wood or mineral fiber: Batts or blankets of

mineral wood or mineral fiber or other approved nonrigid materials shall be permitted

for compliance with the 10-foot (3048 mm) horizontal fireblocking in walls constructed

using parallel rows of studs or staggered studs.

717.2.1.2 Unfaced fiberglass: Unfaced fiberglass batt insulation used as fireblocking

shall fill the entire cross-section of the wall cavity to a minimum height of 16 inches

(406 mm) measured vertically. When piping, conduit or similar obstructions are

encountered, the insulation shall be packed tightly around the obstruction.

717.2.1.3 Loose-fill insulation material: Loose-fill insulation material, insulating

foam sealants and caulk materials shall not be used as fireblock unless

specifically tested in the form or manner intended for use to demonstrate its

ability to remain in place and to retard the spread of fire and hot gases.
