At the Library & Advertising

At the Library with Glenda MulderJuly 8, 2020

Our July book choice is The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Richardson. Our library received a multiple copy set as a grant from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine. It is about the pack horse librarians in Kentucky during the Great Depression. It’s also about the blue people of that region. Have you heard of them? I sure hadn’t! I enjoyed this book so much when it first came out that I’m looking forward to reading it again – it’s just that good! Join our discussion on Monday, July 27 if you feel comfortable doing that! Some of the novels we have received this week include: Muzzled by David Rosenfelt, Want by Lynn Steger Strong, The Lost and Found Bookshop (Reg & LP) by Susan Wiggs, The Revelators by Ace Atkins, Dangerous Pursuits by Jo Bannister, The Outsider by Linda Castillo, Always the Last to Know by Kristan Higgins, All the Broken People by Leah Konen, Golden Cage by Camilla Lackberg, Once You Go This Far by Kristen Lepionka, Walk Along the Beach (Reg & audio, LP is on order!) by Debbie Macomber and The Wedding Thief by Mary Simses. In nonfiction books we received Gentle on My Mind: In Sickness and in Health with Glen Campbell by his wife, Kim Campbell and White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin Diangelo. Thanks to Sarah Pohlman Hagar for the following books in memory of Denny Waters. I think they represent him nicely! Ben Hogan’s 5 Golf Lessons, The Truth about Cancer, and Awesome Science Experiments for Kids. We are open our regular hours, but if you don’t feel comfortable coming in the library yet, let us know you need materials delivered, or we will arrange an outdoor pickup.

Yard and Garden: Minor Insect Pests of TreesSome pests on trees are conspicuous. These easy-to-spot pests can be disconcerting; however, don’t panic, as many don’t cause serious harm to trees. For more information on pests and taking care of landscape plants, contact the horticulture specialists at [email protected]. There are small, white objects resembling kernels of popcorn on the branches of my silver maple tree. What are they? The small, white, popcorn-like objects are likely cottony maple scale (Pulvinaria innumerabilis). Cottony maple scale is an insect. It is most commonly found on silver maple trees. However, it can also be found on other maples, oak, linden, hackberry, honey locust and other trees. In June, female scales begin to produce large, white, cottony egg sacs that may grow to the size of dimes (up to a ½-inch in diameter). Large numbers of egg sacs look like popcorn strung along branches and twigs. The eggs within the expanded egg sacs (up to 1,000 eggs per sac) begin to hatch in early July. The new scale nymphs crawl to the undersides of leaves where they feed on sap from the leaf tissue. The scales grow to adulthood on the leaves and mate in August or September. After mating,

the females return to the tree’s twigs to spend the winter. There is one generation per year. Cottony maple scale insects excrete a clear, sticky substance called honeydew. The honeydew drops onto leaves on the lower portions of infested trees. It also drops onto plants or other objects (patio furniture, cars, driveways, etc.) beneath trees. Oftentimes, a sooty mold fungus colonizes the honeydew, resulting in a black sooty appearance on leaves, branches, and other objects. Cottony maple scale usually causes little harm to healthy trees. Natural predators (such as lady beetles), parasites and adverse weather conditions typically control an infestation within one or two years. Treatment of cottony maple scale with insecticides may do more harm than good, as the insecticide may kill the scale’s predators and parasites. There are small masses of foam-like material in my pine tree. What are they? The foam-like masses in the pine tree were likely created by the pine spittlebug (Aphrophora parallela). Spittlebugs are a small group of sap-feeding insects. Spittlebugs are easily recognizable because of the foamy mass of “spit” that surrounds the spittlebug nymphs (the immature stage of the insect) as they feed on sap from their host plants. The foamy spittle protects the nymphs from predators and desiccation. The pine spittlebug feeds on Scotch, Austrian, and eastern white pine, spruces, and firs. The pine spittlebug typically

causes little harm to trees. Control is usually not necessary. There are small, red bumps on the leaves of my maple tree. Should I be concerned? The small, red bumps on the maple leaves are maple bladder galls. Maple bladder galls are a “pouch” gall. They are caused by a tiny mite. Adult mites spend the winter under the bark and other protected locations on trees. In early spring, the adults move to developing leaves and begin feeding. The leaf responds to the small irritation by rapidly producing extra cells that form the abnormal growth at the feeding site. The gall encloses the mite, which continues to feed and lay numerous eggs within the gall. At first, the galls are light green in color. They quickly turn bright red and finally black by the end of summer. Maple bladder galls cause little harm to healthy, well-established trees. It’s best to ignore the presence of maple bladder galls on trees. Preventive sprays are not practical. Nothing can be done after the galls have formed.

2020 4-H Show Iowa to Provide Virtual Recognition of 4-H Exhibits,EventsWhile safety limitations put a hold on the Iowa State Fair this year, 4-H youth across Iowa will still have plenty of opportunities to showcase learning exhibits and participate in events online. A special exhibition, 4-H Show Iowa, will provide state level recognition to partially replace the loss of learning opportunities due to the postponement of this year’s Iowa State Fair. Included in these virtual celebrations are 4-H Exhibits, Communication Events and the Awardrobe Clothing Selection. Counties will be encouraged to select exhibits for this special exhibition in a similar manner to how they normally select exhibits and participants for the Iowa State Fair. Each exhibitor will provide one or more photos, an exhibit “write-up” and a brief summary of the exhibit. For communication

events, video links will be submitted. Awardrobe participants will provide one or more photos, the event report form and a style show narrative. Volunteer judges will evaluate all exhibits and events. Outstanding exhibits and communication participants will be selected in all departments and will receive special recognition. The Awardrobe event will continue to select five outstanding participants in each division. Ribbons will be awarded as in previous years. Funding for ribbons has been donated by the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “We appreciate the generous funding that Iowa 4-H Foundation has provided,” said Debbie Nistler, Iowa 4-H state program leader. “Support for this opportunity helps ensure that all members have an opportunity to showcase their learning efforts this year.” A public showcase of all entries will be made available using the photos of entries and summary information. The public exhibition will be released during the originally planned Iowa State Fair dates, Aug. 13-23. Information for 4-H youth exhibitors and families can be found on the 4-H Show Iowa

webpage at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/2020-4-h-show-iowa. For more information on the Iowa 4-H Youth Development program, please contact Pocahontas County Extension and Outreach at (712) 335-3103 or visit the Iowa 4-H website at www.extension.iastate.edu/4h .

Garden and Green Bean Safety: Serve Up Fresh Produce, Not Foodborne IllnessThis week’s Sow, Grow, Eat and Keep instructional video at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/humansciences/sow-grow-eat-keep from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will talk about keeping garden produce safe, and also canning green beans. The warmer weather is helping gardens grow and bloom. Gardeners should make sure they are not harvesting pests and bacteria that can cause foodborne illness along with their fruits and vegetables. During this week’s session, gardeners will learn steps to take to keep their garden produce safe, including keeping animals out of their garden and washing their hands properly.Gardeners will likely be busy harvesting fresh green beans soon. If you’re wondering how you can enjoy this tasty vegetable year-round, consider canning. Vegetables, like green beans, are low acid foods that must be

pressure canned to kill harmful bacteria and prevent spoilage. Pressure canning tends to scare people who are new to canning. However, it becomes less scary when we learn more about it. The key to safe home food preservation is to find a tested recipe and follow the instructions carefully. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach uses the National Center for Home Food Preservation website, https://nchfp.uga.edu/ and recipes and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Complete Guide to Home Canning, https://nifa.usda.gov/press-release/usdas-complete-guide-home-canning-available. The webinar will provide general information about pressure canning. For more detailed information on pressure canning, check out the ISU Extension and Outreach Food Preservation 101 online class and the Canning: Vegetables publication for more food preservation information. For those interested in learning more about gardening, contact your ISU Extension and Outreach county office for information about the Master Gardener program. Training begins across the state this fall. ISU Extension and Outreach will continue hosting weekly Sow, Grow, Eat and Keep, https://

www.extension.iastate.edu/humansciences/sow-grow-eat-keep quickinars. These quickinars will be 5-15 minute online lessons of seasonally appropriate topics for the garden, food preparation and food preservation. Some of the upcoming topics include:
