How a mobile phone worksThe SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card holds a microchip and slips into the handset

allowing you access to a mobile phone network. This network is made up of a series of

base stations that send signals used by mobile phones. The area covered by each of

these base stations is called a cell and cells overlap to make up a coverage area.

Whenever you switch a mobile phone on it will connect to the nearest base station. As

you move around you may get closer to another base station in another cell. When this

happens, the network will automatically switch your phone to the other base station.

If the base station that your phone is switched to is already working to its full capacity it

cannot take in your signal. If this happens you may get a drop out and your phone will

not work in that area. Dropped calls can also happen when you are in an area where

    cells do not overlap.

How does a cell phone work? This is simple. If a standard radio usesa simplex communication system so that you can hear the moderatortalking, without having the possibility to reply, a cell phone is aduplex device permitting you to talk to the person who started thecall. It sends and receives radio signals using cell sites located onspecially built towers, poles or buildings, all being connected to alarge cabled network with a switching system. The smart thing is thatcell phones send data to the nearest cell sites located at maximum 13Km away, this after they are turned On, moment when it registerswith the switch, using a unique identifier.

Who Invented the Cell Phone? If you want to know who was the firstwho got the idea of creating a cellular phone the answer is theAmerican Telephone & Telegraph which is no other than AT&T fromthe United States, which was the world's largest telephone companyand the world's largest cable television operator, with $300 billion

dollars revenue. It was purchased by Baby Bell SBC Communicationsin 2005.

In April 1973, Dr Martin Cooper, former general manager for the

systems division at Motorola, invented the mobile phone prototypeand made the first call to Joel Engel, his rival, head of research atBell Labs.

    How Mobile Phones Work

Mobile phones work by sending and receiving wireless radiosignals. The handsets that people carry with them communicate witheach other via base stations that are interconnected by way of

switching centers. Base stations are located every few kilometersthroughout the country, and mobile phones can be used just aboutanywhere that has a sizable population.

There are four brands of mobile-phone service in Japan at present: i-mode (operated by NTT DoCoMo), au (by KDDI), Vodafone, and TU-KA. Behind the spread of mobile phones in Japan lies the competitionbetween these different service providers, which have worked to setup networks of base stations, bring down costs to the user, and make

    their phones easy to use.

Lithium-ion batteries (NTT DoCoMo)In the early 1990s, Sony Corp. developed lithium-ion batteries thatwere light, thin, and capable of storing a large amount of power, andother major makers rushed to keep pace. As these new powerfulbatteries became commonly used, mobile phones became small andlight enough that a user could comfortably fit one in his or her pocket. The spread of mobile phones has been spurred by technologydeveloped in Japan.

How do cell phones work? You've seen them, perhaps you've used one. Each day something like 100,000people around the world sign up for and start using a cellular phone. Therefore itis likely that you or someone you know has a cell phone and uses it on a regular

basis. They are such great gadgets - with a cell phone you can talk to anyone onthe planet from just about anywhere (80% of the U.S. has coverage). But have you ever wondered how a cell phone works? Or what happens whenyou talk on one? Or how a call gets routed to a regular phone? we will discussthe technology behind cell phones so that you can see how amazing they really

are.One of the most interesting things about a cell phone is that it is really a radio -an extremely sophisticated radio, but a radio nonetheless. A good way tounderstand the sophistication of a cell phone is to compare it to a CB radio or awalkie-talkie. A CB radio is a simplex device. That is, two people communicatingon a CB radio use the same frequency, so only one person can talk at a time. Acell phone is a duplex device, so it uses one frequency for talking and a second, separate frequency for listening. A CB radio has 40 channels. A cell phone cancommunicate on 1,664 channels. Cell phones also operate within cells and theycan switch cells as they move around. Cells give cell phones incredible range. Awalkie-talkie can transmit perhaps a mile. A CB radio, because it has much

higher power, can transmit perhaps 5 miles. Someone using a cell phone, on theother hand, can drive clear across a city and maintain a conversation the entiretime. Cells are what give a cell phone its incredible range

Mobile phones have become one of the most essential necessities in todays time and this

compact gadget proves to be much more then a mere tool of communication. The cell

phones works as a two way radio which sends as well as receives signals with the basestations of the cell site.

When you talk on a cell phone the voice messages in it gets converted into the radio waves

and these waves travel through the air to reach the close by base station. From these basestations the calls are sent across the communication network and finally reach the receiver

of the call. Base station which is located near to the called number sends the radio waves so

that the receiver device can detect them and finally the cell phone of the receiver convertthese signals into voice and call takes a place.

Majority of the cell phone uses the digital technology that coverts your voice into

form of binary digits 0 and 1 and these data packets are relayed through the wirelessnetworks of the receiving phone. So from now onwards when ever you will use your mobile

phone you will be well aware about its working.
