High Density
Characteristics
Coatings produced using HVOF have outstandingcharacteristics, even above other thermal spray pro-cesses, that include:
• High density. Typical coatings have less than 2%porosity and some coatings as low as 0.5% porosity.
• High bond strength. For example, typical carbidecoatings sprayed with HVOF exhibit bond strengthsin excess of 82 MPA (12,000 PSI). Other coatingmaterials sprayed with HVOF have significantlyhigher bond strengths than the same materialsapplied using other atmospheric thermal sprayprocesses such as air plasma spray.
• Optimum Hardness. A 12% tungsten carbide /cobalt coating will have a typical micro hardness of1100 to 1350 DPH300.
• Improved Toughness. Depending on chemistryand other factors, the short dwell time and lowertemperatures of HVOF can produce wear resistantcoatings with excellent impact resistance.
• Higher Coating Thickness. Coatings exhibit greatercoating thickness limits than plasma, combustionor wire coatings of the same coating material. Thesehigh thickness limits are attributed to a stress-relieving ‘shot-peening’ effect produced by the highvelocity particles impacting upon the previous layersof coating. Some tungsten carbide coatings canhave a thickness greater than 6.4 mm (0.250 inches).
Advanced HVOF Technology for Superior Coating Characteristics
• Beneficial Residual Stress. Compressive residualstresses and, in some cases, very low tensile stressesenhance the fatigue life of a coated component, reduce the susceptibility of cracking and permitgreater coating thickness limits.
• Excellent Wear Resistance. HVOF coatings canexhibit superior resistance to sliding / adhesive wear, fretting, erosion or cavitation depending on thematerial and process parameters chosen.
• Superb Corrosion Resistance. The high densityand exceptional metallurgical properties of HVOFcoatings provide enhanced resistance to the effectsof corrosion, including hot corrosion, oxidation andthe effects of corrosive media such as acidic andalkaline atmospheres and liquids.
• Fine Surface Finishes. Smooth surfaces finishesallow HVOF-produced coatings to be used in theas-sprayed condition for many applications. Coatingscan be machined, ground, lapped, honed or super-finished to produce very high surface finishes toprecise tolerances.

Process
FlexibilityThe HVOF (High Velocity Oxy Fuel) Spray Process
The powder particles flatten plastically upon impactwith the substrate; cooling and solidifying to form thecoating.
High particle velocities, uniform heating and low dwelltime combine to produce coatings that are very denseand tightly bonded to the substrate. Coating chemistriesare more predictable and coatings have fine, homogeneous microstructures.

ProcessProven to Produce Reproducible Surfaces to Exacting Requirements
The HVOF process efficiently combusts oxygen and agaseous or liquid fuel to produce high kinetic energywith controlled heat input. The coating material, inpowder form, is introduced into and uniformly heatedby the hot gas stream to a molten or semi-moltencondition. The flame and powder are accelerated bya converging / diverging nozzle (air cap) to producesupersonic gas and particle velocities, which propelthe powder particles toward the substrate to be coated.
At Sulzer Metco, we know our customers have unique needs and application goals, so we offer the widestrange of process choices to ensure we meet your exact expectations.
• Choice of Coating Materials. Choose from a wide variety of coating materials including pure metals, metallic alloys, metallic blends, carbides and self-fluxing materials, tailored to gas or liquid fuel systems.
• Fuels. Gas-fueled systems can use hydrogen, ethylene, propane, propylene or natural gas. Liquid-fueledsystems can use kerosene. Choose the fuel process that is suitable to your production requirements, economics and coating quality needed.
• System Options. Choose the system configuration that fits your budget and production requirements, witha choice of standard and customized part manipulators and gun manipulators.

Key ElementsKey Elements of a HVOF SolutionBuilding Blocks of a Successful HVOF Solution
Fully Automated HVOF Spray System
Key Components. Key elements are required for allHVOF spray systems. These include the coating materialto be applied, a powder feeder to deliver the coatingmaterial to the spray gun, the HVOF spray gun that willheat the coating material and propel it to the workpiece, and a control system that accurately controls the gasflows required for HVOF combustion.
Handling Equipment. In all but the most simple ofmanual spray systems, handling equipment preciselycontrols the movement of the spray gun and workpiece, and the position of the gun relative to the workpiece.
Peripheral Equipment. Most HVOF spray installationsrequire a cooling water system for the spray gun andit is often necessary to have cooling air to control thetemperature of the workpiece. In addition, a soundproofcabin and an air filtration and exhaust system protectboth personnel and the environment.
