The Tom Francis Final

Sunday morning of the 30th July saw the final of The Mid-Sussex Tom Francis Mixed Double Fourstake place at the green of St. Francis where we played old rivals Newick who we last met in the final of 2007. The result is decided by adding up both scores, unfortunately for us Keith's rink was alarmingly always lagging behind and although Brian's four surged ahead early on they eventually tied their rink and didnot play the final end due to the

deficit on Keith's rink. The winners shield was presented to Des Ford of Newick by Mid-Sussex President Colin Morphew who also presented Dick Goodman with our runners-up shield. Organiser Viv Evans was match umpire

We defeated Haywards Heath, West Hoathly and Lindfield on our way to the final. Descaptain of Newick thanked St. Francis for the use of their green and both clubs commented on how well the green had played especially considering the previous evenings heavy rain.

The Tom Francis trophy competition is a Mid-Sussex League event which until Dave Welsh's health problems was organised by him for many years. It is in effect the league cup and was originally set up by Tom Francis who was a great supporter of the Mid-Sussex League and was a member of Haywards Heath and Beechurst Bowls Club and was named after Tom in recognition of his work for The Mid-Sussex League.

The Mary Brown Cup

The Mary Brown cup is named after Mary who was a member some thirty years ago and the cup was donated and presented by her husband Frank who was also a member for many years , sadly both are no longer with us. The format for the event was devised by another former member Ron Wright who moved away due to work commitments and it has proved to be very popular. The captains charity this year is The British Heart Foundation and £250 was raised on the day. The day started at eleven with 36 members taking part. The format was adjusted because of the number of members taking part was short of the required amount for rinks so triples and pairsformat was used. The event organised by Brian Turan smoothly throughout the day with Trixi Barnden, Deryn Mitchell and Kritian Berggreen finally coming out as the 2017 Mary Brown Cup winners.

The Jackson TrophyThis annual match is between The Mid-Sussex League Teamand The John Spriggs League Team and has been played on 17occasions following its inauguration in 1998. The trophy wasprovided by Fred Jackson the then captain and his vice-captainKeith Jackson, for the newer members they were not related. The evening has always proved popular and every effort ismade to turn out the regular league teams, sometimes this doesnot work out but the match always remain competitive. Thisyear we can celebrate the success of the Spriggs team winningDivision One and the Mid-Sussex team coming third in theirdivision one. The evening is traditionally finished off with a fish & chip supper.

The match commenced on time and the early stages favoured the Spriggs who took an early lead but by the half way mark Mid-Sussex were forging ahead with one rink wellahead, another level and the third somewhat behind. The match finished 8-2 to the Mids with Spriggs captain Barbara managing a three shot success on her rink. The match ended just as the supper arrived, perfect timing by Mrs Jupp of Jupps fish shop. The Jackson Trophy staying in the hands of the Mids. for another year.

Ladies Invitation Day Report by Anne Clifford

This year for the first time in nine years we were blessed with aslightly damp day! It was so wet that Seagulls were seen on thegreen sitting in the puddles, however we made the most of itand 48 players sat down and tested their brain power with acouple of quizzes.Lindfield were the away winners with Chris T,Mary, Jeanette and Val winning for the home side. They were given Next vouchers to treat themselves. After that effort a salad meal was served followed by profiteroles and chocolate sauce.

The raffle was very well supported with everyone giving generously and the handsome sum of £194 was raised for The British Heart Foundation.

My thanks to all who helped on the day and beforehand especially Pat Avis who was my right hand person.Pat Mellor has helped for years and Jean Bennett worked very hard in the Kitchen. We could not haved managed without them. Our captain Jenny thanked everyone who had worked really hard to make the day a success but even Jenny could not stop the deluge that fell on our lovely green.
