WWW.OMIES.COM 24/7 EMERGENCY RESPONSE 1-800-645-66712

From the moment we answer the phone our priority is to assist you with your emergency. Our professional staff guides you from our first “Hello” through the final sign-off of a completed project. urgency is not

measured by the size of the spill or the size of the company; rather it is the speed and comprehensiveness

of response to every customer call.

“Yes, I have an emergency” gets our customer immediately transferred to our operations division who after recording pertinent information, dispatch the closest resources and begin the documentation procedures. From small spills measured in gallons to large spills of national significance, each customer will rapidly get a professional team to assess the situation and begin remediation operations. Once on-site our managers will determine the best and most cost effective clean-up method including the following for oil spill cleanup:

additionally, our employees work diligently on the logistics of setting up communications, computer access, hotel rooms for those responding, as well as portable restrooms, hand washing stations, decontamination stations, supplies and meals for the workers, and transportation to move the waste. Within hours a small city can be built with command centers and central Supply to provide the core support for the effort.

Recently, OMIES was called for a big spill in Texas and was one of the primary Oil Spill Removal Organizations (OSRO) to assist with the clean-up and made the national news!

YOu HaD ME aT “HELLO”! “Hello OMI Environmental Solutions, Do you have an emergency?”

• Boom

• Skimmers to remove floating oil from the water surface

• absorbents to absorb oil

• In-situ burning

• High-pressure or low- pressure washing

• Vacuum trucks to skim and store oil

• Shovels and road equipment

Central Supply is a mobile safety supply store that can rapidly deploy to any site with stocked van trailers and logistics personnel. Implementation of Central Supply allows the customer to negotiate pricing with one supplier which ensures the timely delivery of supplies. Having one central supplier saves customers time and money.

The work frac means “to fracture.” a frac tank is used to hold water, or a proppant, when a well is being fractured. a proppant is a solid material, typically treated sand or man-made ceramic materials, designed to keep an induced hydraulic fracture open, during or following a fracturing treatment. It is added to a fracking fluid which may vary in composition depending on the type of fracturing used, and can be gel, foam or slick water-based. The material is held in a frac tank and connected by a hose or pipeline to a pump that will flow it down the wellbore at a high pressure to push open the formation and the proppant is used to keep it open.

a frac tank can also be called a mobile storage or portable tank. Frac tanks can be used in vary large clean up operations, oil field operations, or just for on-site storage or temporary storage of water and other liquids. It can be used in conjunction with pumps, filters, dewatering units and vacuum boxes as part of a large scale project. Most frac tanks can hold 21,000 gallons and have many valves for easy access to various pumping operations.

OMIES Transportation division can supply frac tanks, vacuum boxes and roll off boxes available to use separately or in conjunction with our other services such as spill response, tank cleaning and disposal.

compact fluorescent light bulbs (cFL) and other fluorescent light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. When a fluorescent bulb breaks,

some of this mercury is released as mercury vapor. To minimize exposure to mercury vapor,

the EPa recommends the folliwing cleanup and disposal steps:

Before Cleanup

• Have people and pets leave the room.

• air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment.

• Shut off the central forced air heating/ air-conditioning system, if you have one.

• collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb:

- stiff paper or cardboard;

- sticky tape;

- damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces); and

- a glass jar with a metal lid or a sealable plastic bag.

During Cleanup

• DO NOT VacuuM. Vacuuming is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. Vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor.

• Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder. Scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard. use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Place the used tape in the glass jar or plastic bag.

• Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.

After Cleanup

• Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of. avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.

• Next, check with your local government about disposal requirements in your area, because some localities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your trash.

• If practical, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours.

Michael arcement, OMIES Louisiana Standby Rescue coordinator, recently reported that the Louisiana OMIES Standby Rescue division successfully completed three new corporate audits. These audits focused on training, equipment, and readiness to respond. OMIES is now at the top of these customers’ preferred vendor lists.

audits are initiated by a company we are working for and are similar to the OSRO audit conducted by the coast Guard. During the audit, OMIES provides training, maintenance and inspection records. For example, for training we explain to the customer where we train and the methodology behind our training. Each audit is customized to the customer’s needs.

a three day, hands-on training opportunity for state, local and federal environmental enforcement professionals was recently conducted at Sam Houston State university in Huntsville, TX. The training was developed and produced by SHSu’s Project EncriPT through an EPa State Environmental Enforcement Training grant. One of the guest instructors, andrea a. abat, Special agent with EPa’s Office of criminal Enforcement, Forensics and Training, worked closely with OMI Environmental Solutions (OMIES) personnel throughout the planning and execution of the training. Travis Hudson and Mark Meleski of OMIES assisted with demonstrations, field exercises, proper PPE selection, site assessments, sampling methodology and evidence sampling with the students. Some of the OMIES equipment that was provided included: detection and monitoring meters, sampling media and equipment, drums and containers, and Level a through Level D PPE.

Tony Stamper, OMIES TX Regional Manager, and ann Stamper, OMIES TX Waste Management & Disposal Manager, have been associated with the environmental crimes group for many years serving in the capacity of contractor, member or instructor in some of their organizations since the late 90s. They have participated in many raids and sting events involving environmental crimes, assisted with case work, and been called to the stand for expert testimony. Some of the instructors teaching this part of the class were once students of the Stampers. The Stampers have been instrumental in developing and supporting the Texas region for OMIES over the past 10 years.

OMIES was recognized for its contribution and assistance for this very first college level class in Environmental crimes.

”I know I speak for all of the instructors and facilitators when I tell you how much we appreciate the support provided by OMI Environmental Solutions for last week’s training program in Huntsville. It took tremendous pressure off of us to know that all of the equipment, from PPE to crime scene props to ERGs, was in place and in good working order. Travis Hudson and Mark Meleski were superlative representatives of OMIES and consummate professionals, and there was not a task from which they shied away. We could not have conducted the program without OMIES’s assistance, and we thank you for making it a success.”

chip Hingle, OMIES asbestos, Lead and Mold Manager, would like to remind you that some chemicals should NEVER be mixed together. Our offices, warehouse, factories and even our homes are filled with chemicals that when combined with others could be lethal. In fact, these chemicals

should not even be stored near each other on the chance that an accident could occur and the chemicals could

react. Be sure to keep incompatibilities in mind when reusing containers to store other chemicals.

Many people know that ammonia mixed with bleach may or could cause a toxic gas. But did you know to

never pour undiluted bleach straight from the bottle onto spills you need to clean up of blood, urine, sputum or vomit. Dangerous levels of toxic nitrous oxide gases could result. Bleach should also not be combined with toilet bowl cleaners, swimming pool acid, ammonia, rust remover, or any acid-type substance. also, never mix ammonia with pool acid or drain cleaner.

Oven cleaners have sodium hydroxide (lye) and may or could cause extreme heat if mixed with sulfuric acid (like drain cleaners) or hydrochloric acid (like toilet bowl cleaner). The fumes from lye alone are dangerous to contact lens wearers and mucous membranes. Lye can cause burns.

Drain cleaners contain sulfuric acid and when mixed with bleach, pool chlorine or any other chlorine-based substance can create chlorine gas (as used in chemical warfare).

Paint remover that contains methylene chloride (a known cancer causing agent) may rupture violently during a fire.

Insecticide is flammable around heat or open flame, pilot lite, cigarette and even a light switch. It contains a chemical that can cause aspiration pneumonia if breathed in quantity.

Just about any household or garden pesticide or herbicide, when mixed together in large quantities, can become dangerous.

For storage and disposal:

• all products should all be on a floor level shelf so any shaking motion will affect them less. The shelf, cabinet or shelves should be anchored to the wall with some type of restraint across the front of the shelf to prevent bottles from falling.

• Pesticides, pool cleaners, etc. should not be IN your house.

• Store, use and dispose of household chemicals according to the instructions on the label.

• keep all medicines, cosmetics, cleaning products, and other household chemicals out of sight and out of reach of children.

• Buy only as much as you will need to use so you don’t have to store extras.

Incompatible Chemicals Possible result

acids with cyanide salts or cyanide solution. Generates highly toxic hydrogen cyanide gas.

acids with sulfide salts or sulfide solutions. Generates highly toxic hydrogen sulfide gas.

acids with bleach.Generates highly toxic chlorine gas. an example of this would be mixing bleach and vinegar.

ammonia with bleach. Releases toxic chloramine vapors.

Oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid, per chloric acid) with combustible materials (e.g., paper, alcohols, other common solvents).

May result in fire.

Solid oxidizers (e.g., permanganates, iodates, nitrates) with combustible materials (e.g., paper, alcohols, other common solvents).

May result in fire.

Hydrides (e.g., sodium hydride) with water. May form flammable hydrogen gas.

Phosphides (e.g., sodium phosphide) with water. May form highly toxic phosphine gas.

Silver salts with ammonia in the presence of a strong base. May generate an explosively unstable solid.

alkali metals (e.g., sodium, potassium) with water. May form flammable hydrogen gas.

Oxidizing agents (e.g., nitric acid) with reducing agents (e.g., hydrazine). May cause fires or explosions.

unsaturated compounds (e.g., substances containing carbonyls or double bonds) in the presence of acids or bases.

May polymerize violently.

Hydrogen peroxide/acetone mixtures when heated in the presence of an acid. May cause explosions.

Hydrogen peroxide/acetic acid mixtures. May explode upon heating.

Hydrogen peroxide/sulfuric acid mixtures. May spontaneously detonate.

When it comes to keeping your facility clean, there’s more at stake than general tidiness. an effective clean-up approach for routine leaks, drips and spills

can greatly affect employee safety, regulatory compliance and your bottom line, depending on how you control and contain industrial fluids and chemicals at your facility.

For most spill clean-up and prevention, you may already use absorbents throughout your facility. absorbent products typically include pads, pillows, rolls, socs and granular absorbents. However, an overwhelming number of businesses don’t always use the right type of absorbent for the application. You may be surprised at the savings and efficiencies you can gain by making a few adjustments to your absorbent usage.

The number one cause of accidents in industrial facilities is slips, trips and falls, accounting for approximately 20% of all workplace injuries. a major source of these incidents are hazards caused by leaks and spills from substances such as oil, lubricants, coolants, cutting fluids, battery acid, solvents, chemicals and fuel. They can occur virtually anywhere in the plant, but often near equipment, in high-traffic areas and wherever fluids are handled and stored. For specific guidance on how you can create a safer plant, you should consider an absorbent usage survey. a thorough survey can help you identify specific areas and ways to improve safety through proper absorbent usage.

You may also want to assess the basis weight and disposal timing of your current absorbents. are you using and throwing away a heavyweight absorbent that only has a few drops of oil on it or is only partially saturated? You might save on purchase and disposal costs by using a medium or lightweight product. additionally, you may have the right product, but are simply disposing of it too soon.

absorbents can play a vital role in compliance with local, state and federal regulations. Inside your facility, OSHa (the Occupational Safety and Health administration) requires clean, dry workplace floors. Outside your facility, the DOT (Department of Transportation) specified containers and suitable quantities of absorbents are to be kept available for spill response. The EPa (Environmental Protection agency) also requires you to control sources of storm water runoff and to have people and plans in place to clean up any hazardous waste discharged into the environment.

almost every facility is required to have a plan for Spill Prevention, control and countermeasure (SPcc). Strategically locating spill kits should be part of that plan. Let OMIES help you identify where to place spill kits and ways to comply – both inside the facility for spill containment and control, and outside of your facility to be used as countermeasures to minimize environmental impact if a spill occurs.

The bottom line is, when you need absorbents; don’t just pick a product from a catalog because it looks similar to what you have used, or because the machinery in the picture looks similar to what your facility operates. arrange a survey to address the unique needs of your plant – even consider an annual survey to keep you updated about how changes in absorbent technology, products and regulations may affect your business. Let OMIES identify opportunities, offer cost-saving absorbent solutions, and advise you on how to achieve compliance.

The 2014 National Safety Month theme, “Safety: It takes all of us,” was inspired by the idea of continuous risk reduction – a key pillar in the Journey to Safety Excellence. a successful

safety program depends on spotting hazards early, evaluating their risk and removing or

controlling them before harm is done. use this June to find creative ways to engage everyone in reducing risk in your workplaces. a little effort today has the potential to prevent tragedy tomorrow.

Above, OMIES participates in many professional organizations to show support, to participate and for educational purposes. wendy Sawyer, OMIES Business Development, is seen here (center) at a recent meeting of the St. john Chapter of the Louisiana Emergency Preparedness Association (LEPA).

The International Propeller club of the united States, conceived in 1922, is an international business network dedicated to the promotion of the maritime industry, commerce and global trade. The Propeller club aggressively promotes the maritime industry through many of its programs and partnering with other similar organizations. Their goal is to educate legislators and the public as to the importance and necessity of all waterborne commerce.

“Propeller” in the name refers to the propulsion of ships and is symbolic of the driving force required to communicate the need for an adequate, privately-owned merchant marine for both overseas and domestic commerce. There are more than 80 Ports in maritime locations around the world, including almost 30 in foreign cities. The International Propeller club is organized into 10 regions, seven in the u.S. and three international regions.

The conference focused on issues regarding the latest technology to keep us and the environment safe from oil spills. Mr. Thompson has been a driving force in the environmental services industry since 1978.

Over 2000 people representing over a dozen different countries took part in the weeklong conference, which featured panel discussions and showed off the latest equipment to help clean up from an oil spill.

“We produce and transport today, 99.99 percent of everything we do safely,” said Jack Gerard, President/cEO-american Petroleum Institute. “However, we’re working to squeeze out that last .001 percent to make sure we have zero incidents that we protect the public, we protect the environment.”

The International Oil Spill conference is only held once every three years.
