It’s been an annual event that many enjoy whether they are Buckeye fan or just enjoy hearing a 30 piece brass band perform. As a spe- cial treat the current Ohio State drum major Kyle West will thrill the audience with his exciting performance. There may even be a “Script Ohio” led by the drum major. The Erie County band has been performing in the area for over 30 years and is made up of OSU alumni from Erie and surrounding counties. The band will perform all the tradition- al Buckeye songs like”Hang on Sloopy” and “Buckeye Battle Cry” plus a wide variety of music sure to please everyone. Don’t miss this exciting event Sunday August 5th at 7 p.m. at the Huron Boat Basin. “Buckeye Spirit” BY LISA YAKO This September, ground will be broken on the corner of Berlin and Cleveland roads for a new senior housing development. The de- velopment will be constructed for and man- aged by Miller Valentine Group of Cincinnati. Miller Valentine has been in business for 60 years and in the residential housing business for the past 20 years. The company has devel- oped, owns, and manages, over 10,000 hous- ing units throughout the Midwest and South- east. Their holdings include developments in Whitehouse and Sylvania Township in subur- ban Toledo, similar to the one to be construct- ed in Huron. According to Pete Schwiegeraht of Miller Valentine, our city was chosen as the site for a new senior housing project because “Huron is a wonderful community, an ideal retirement area, and has no comparable se- nior independent living facilities.” The requirements for residency at the new development will relate to both age and in- come level. Specifically, residents must be 55 or older and have an adjusted median house- hold income of 60% or less of the median in- come in Huron. The development will con- tain 12 1-story cottages each with 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, and an attached 1-car garage and 1 3-story building with an elevator that contains 33 units each with 1 or 2 bedrooms. All units will be 100% accessible and include a myriad of amenities. The development will also include amenities such as on-site management, a theater, fitness center, busi- ness center, club/banquette rooms, outdoor recreation space, picnic shelter, senior service plans, and community gardens. According to Schwiegeraht, the service plans “include ac- cess to transportation, meals programs, medi- cal referral, a residents’ association, regularly scheduled programs and activities, and link- age to other local programs and services pro- viders.” The facility will also adhere to Enter- prise Green Standards. Finally, the convenient location of the development will make many of Huron’s business and restaurants very easy to reach by foot. Miller Valentine will serve as the general contractor for the construction of the new de- velopment. But, beginning in August Miller Valentine will put out a call for bids for the subcontractor work. They invite all local sub- contractors to bid the work. The construction phase is estimated to take six months. Once the construction is complete, Miller Valentine will retain ownership of the development but will hire 2 full-time employees and 1 part- time employee. Huron will benefit from this new develop- ment in a number of ways. Specifically, the development “will allow local seniors an op- tion to stay in town as their needs change. It will also offer residents an unrivaled senior living environment.” stated Schwiegeraht. Additionally, the facility represents nearly $9,000,000 in development and likely will boost the population of Huron. If you would like more information about leasing a unit at the new development, contact Miller Val- entine at www.yournextplacetolive.com or at 1-800-329-rent. Applications for residency are already being accepted. New Senior Housing Development Coming to Huron As the calendar pages have flipped to August many chang- es have taken place both in and around the Huron City Schools. Floors are waxed and shined, walls are painted, and some new textbooks have been purchased and delivered. One major change at Huron High School is…there is a new captain at the helm. Mr. Scott Matheny, was offered and has accepted the position of Princi- pal of Huron High School dur- ing the June 19 th School Board Meeting. Matheny comes to Huron with three very important qual- ities: experience, energy and a positive attitude. With several years of teaching, coaching and administrative experience be- hind him, he is ready to take on Huron High School. “Coming to Huron is an outstanding op- portunity. It is the crown jewel job,” Matheny explained. Having grown up in nearby Wauseon, Ohio, earned his Master’s at Bowling Green State University, taught and coached in Arcadia and was the Assistant Principal in both Findlay and Sandusky, Matheny is very familiar with Districts the size of Huron and the importance of a small town atmosphere. One of Matheny’s main goals is to help continue the “excel- lence with distinction” mark the district has already earned. “This mark is testament to the years of hard work the District has put forth. I would like to contribute to this by looking at ways to zero in on the small percent- age that may need additional help,” he explained. Additional academic changes in the 2012-2013 school year will include adding a Foren- sic Science Class that will be taught by Mrs. Jennifer Telek- no, the hiring of Mrs. Stepha- nie Hotz to the teaching staff in the Language Arts Depart- ment, new math books that are current with the core stan- dards for the State of Ohio and a Technology Innovation of rolling out I-pads is currently being researched. Additional changes that have taken place for this school year are: a new Mac Computer Lab, an Ap- plied Communications Class- room and within reasonable time the fulfillment of the Ath- letic Director’s position. Matheny describes himself as “not big on sitting back.” He is very proactive, well pre- pared and plans on making changes on an as needed basis. Matheny is very eager to have the students back in the build- ing and to begin focusing on getting to know them. “I am thrilled with the current activ- ity level around the facility,” he explained. “The band practic- ing, the volleyball team in the gym, the cross country team out running (to name a few) – it is great to see all of the activ- ity!” Matheny is looking forward to becoming a Huron resident as soon as he is able to sell his home in Sandusky and move east. He strongly feels it is im- portantly for him to live in the community in which he works In the meantime, he encour- ages students, parents, staff, community members, alumni, to stop in and say hello. Open lines of communication are very important to Matheny, give him a call or drop him an email. He is pleased to be a Huron Tiger now! This extensive tome covers the en-tire gamut of the Huron football ex-perience, with pictures of every phase of the game, some dating all the way back to the very first team in 1914. Yes, you read that right – 1914! You won’t want to miss out on this chance to mingle with all your former team mates, classmates, coaches and teach-ers, so arrive early and stay till the doors close. A cash bar and snacks will be available.

The 11th Annual Saunders/Foss Memorial Golf Scramble was held on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Thunderbird South Golf Course and was a huge success. This years’ fund rais-ing event netted almost$10,000 which will go directly into the Michelle Marie Saunders/Ryan Leigh Foss Memorial Scholar-ship Fund. To date the Schol-arship committee has awarded $66,000 to Huron High School seniors over the past 10 years. This year’s $3,000 scholarship winners were Katlyn Sommer and Brittany Graves.

The day was picture perfect for golf with temperatures in the mid 80’s and humidity much lower than it had been throughout July. There were 76 teams that played in this years’ Double ShotGun start event. There were over 300 golfers, 50 volunteers, and was sponsored by 60 individuals and busi-nesses.

The morning Shot Gun teams consisted mostly of adults, while the afternoon Shot Gun teams were kids ranging in age from 21 to 36. Everyone that plays in this event are ei-ther friends of Michelle and

Ryan, friends of their siblings, friends of their parents, friends of friends, and of course many family members. Ryan’s family members from Pennsylvania and Michelle’s family members from Colorado were there.

The results: First place team was Keith Sweigert , Kevin Tay-lor, Chris Ruby, and Pat Col-linsat 18 under with a 54. Sec-ond place team was Ray Young , Stephen Hunter, Kyle Wright, and Mike Eirons, at 17 under with a 55, Third place team was Steve Schlessman, Kevin Taylor, Jose Sanchez, Casey Taylor at 16 under with a 56 (scorecard playoff with the Joey Bogden team). The women’s winning team was Judy Lesser Team at 3 under with a 69.

Most of the money that is raised at this event comes from the Hole Sponsorships. A big Thank You to all of the individuals, families and busi-nesses that Sponsored a Hole or donated to the event. The Scholarship committee greatly appreciates their support. Be-cause of these generous people, the scholarships will continue to be awarded every year in memory of Michelle and Ryan.
