Vol. 36, No. 28 July 15, 2018 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

I suspect that many of us, at times, may feel inade-quate (uncomfortable) when it comes to spreading the Good News. Some of us may be unsure of what to say or what to do, particularly when we may be discussing our faith with people who don't believe as we do and we find that they are not receptive to us. And, how about those questions we can't an-swer ... aren’t we too tempted to just “shake the dust from our feet.” From Holy Scripture we know that the Apostles, at times, also felt “uncomfortable” about spreading the Good News. However, in today’s Gospel Jesus, in His wisdom and compassion, sends them out two by two -- perhaps, to support each other -- knowing that the mission would be difficult and they would have to depend on each other. Our Church, with its great history, has had many notable “prophets.” St. Paul, for one, St. Peter, Bishop Fulton J. Sheen for another, and perhaps NOT so notable, is US. For it is at our Baptism that each one of us were called and anointed with the oil of Chrism to be Priest, Prophet and King. We were challenged to “deliver” the Good News to all whom we meet by our response to God’s love. God chooses ordinary people and gives them an extraordinary responsibility: moms, dads, auto me-chanics, teachers, nurses, accountants, lawyers, pi-lots, homemakers, engineers and doctors. Look

around you! To every one of us God says, “Go (prophesy)!” Are we qualified to be prophets? We already have jobs and families; we have mortgages and credit card payments. We may feel inadequate (uncomfortable) to the task. And yet, like Amos, the Lord sends all of us to prophesy (to deliver God’s message) to His people.

Have you heard the expres-sion: “God helps those who help themselves”? How many of you think it came from the Bible? No, I’m sorry … Benjamin Franklin said it in 1757. However, one of the main teachings of Scripture is that God

helps those who can’t help themselves, those who are helpless and who trust in Him. Many of us need to be in control and have all the bases covered -- we love checklists! Apparently, trusting God wasn’t a problem for Jesus’ disciples since they went out on their way—without ANY supplies or checklists. Just faith and trust. The choice of being a prophet, a bearer, a deliv-erer of the Good News, is not ours. God already made the choice and when we realize and accept the challenge, He’ll give us what we need. And, Je-sus will whisper to us: “Go, (prophesy) to my peo-ple … in your neighborhoods, in your workplaces, in Appalachia, in Tuckahoe, NY. Amen.

150. “WHAT IS A DEACON AND WHAT DOES HE DO?“

A Catholic deacon is a member of the clergy. In the Catholic Church, "the clergy" consists of three groups of ordained ministers: bishops, priests, and deacons. While all members of the church are called to minister to others by virtue of their baptism, some Catholics are also ordained to specific forms of ministry to serve the rest of the Church. The title "deacon" comes from the Greek word dia-konos, which means "servant." A deacon is ordained by the bishop into the Order of Deacons (commonly re-ferred to as the diaconate). He is publicly and perma-nently configured to Christ the Servant and lives a life of service within the Church and the community. He as-sists the bishop and works collaboratively with the priests and laity in serving the needs of others. Deacons have a threefold ministry that includes ser-vice of the word, service of the liturgy, and service of charity, justice and pastoral outreach. Each deacon is expected to be involved in some aspect of these three areas. The specific roles for each deacon will vary de-pending upon his gifts and the needs of his parish and community. The ministry of the word includes such things as proclamation of the Gospel, preaching, catech-esis, and evangelization. The ministry of the liturgy in-cludes such things as assisting at Mass, presiding at the liturgy of the word both with or without Communion, presiding at baptisms, marriages, funeral services, Ben-ediction and other devotional services. The ministry of charity, justice and pastoral outreach includes such things as reaching out to those who are poor or in need, being present to those on the margins of society, serv-ing those who are lonely or hurting, advocating for the dignity of all people, encouraging and facilitating the service work of others.
