1 Grace and peace be to you from a great God who makes life worth liv- ing. We have completed our Summer. God has brought us through to this point in the year and we are moving on toward a great year. There has been much attempted, experienced and enjoyed. We appreciate the efforts of all who participated in the various activities of the Summer. There has been so much that we all have done and experienced, and for that we are blessed. Our disappointment was the passing of one of the remaining founders, Sis. Edrina Pope. She was a sister who did not cease to serve, even singing almost two months ago for the church anniversary. We will miss Sis. Pope. Her sweetness, and her love for us all will be a sustained memory in our hearts. I want to wish our graduates, Gods love as they make their way to big school.I wish them, and their parents, a great education, as they learn to live and grow as never before. I pray that they find good churches where they can serve, and maintain their spir- itual nurture. I have been so proud of our youth as they have grown in and with this ministry. May Gods grace protect, and direct, throughout this school year. This year saw our first professional athlete. May God bless he, and his family, as they also face a new en- deavor. I would like to say a few words about membership. The essence of membership is a serious commitment to represent Jesus Christ in our local community to- gether. Familiar words like family, teamwork, and friendship all describe aspects of the membership experience. We must have true membership as we go forward through the remainder of the year. We need your support, and your faithful- ness. In the book of Acts, it says in part in 2:42, "They devoted themselves to the apostle's teaching…” It is our participation in the study of the word, and living according to those principles that will help us to be a better church. The strength of Progressive Union is about rela- tionship. I want to know you better, and am willing to share my life. I will be out of town sometimes, but will try to be in place on Sundays. God is using me to bless ministries, and I welcome the opportunity to share as God has allowed. The next few weeks, ministries should complete their final plans for the new year. God expects us to go forward and be about the business of the Kingdom. Help us keep Progressive Union ever focused on its mission. I need your help to enable us to be a church in the word, making a difference in the world!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sunday, September 10, 2017 Articles for the October PROGRESS are due Sunday, September 24, 2017. “Making a Difference in the World” Part 79

Submitted by James E. Smith

Our church motto starts off by declaring that we are a “Church in the Word”. We offer the Word with an 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. Sunday church services and Sunday School at 9:30 a.m. Monday through Thurs-day we offer Bible study each night at 6:30 p.m., and on Wednesday we have 11:30 a.m. midday Bible study.

Paul teaches us to put on the whole armor of God. He also tells us to study to show ourselves approved of God’s Word.

Christ tells us to start off by Loving first God then our fellow brother. Christ also tells us that we must show certain traits of the Spirit. Let us example our-selves. • Do we have a Loving Spirit? • Do we have Patience? • Are we our Brother’s keeper? • Do we go to the lost and show them to Christ? • Do we Love Christ more than we do our own kin?

(Matt.10:37) When we pass this exam we will then start

“Making a Difference in the World”.

Homegoing Services for A Founding Member

Founding Progressive Union Church member, Mrs. Edrina Green Pope, passed on August 6, 2017. Sister Pope was one of only four surviving founding mem-bers of our church. The surviving founding members are Sisters Georgia Lanier, Lucy Leslie and Louise Roberts. Sister Pope was a very active member of our church until her passing at the age of 91. She was a former member of the music ministry of our church, having sung with the choirs of our church, including her last choir the Voices of Praise. She lead several songs and most notable was “Get Away Jordan”, a video clip of Sister Pope leading this song was played at her funeral services. She was a member of the Vis-itation Ministry, serving until her health wouldn't al-low her to serve. Additionally she was a member of the Titus II ministry, a ministry for members 55 and older. Sister Pope was a noted poetess, having writ-ten several poems, several of which she read/recited at various church activities and services. Within Pro-gressive Union she is survived by her daughter Eva, son Harold, and grandsons Terrell and Zachariah. Fu-neral services were held on Sunday, August 11, 2017 with Rev. Wayne Snodgrass officiating. Her gentle spirit and loving ways will be missed by all.
