Xcel Energy and ITC Midwest are building the Huntley- Wilmarth transmission line that will connect Xcel Energy’s Wilmarth Substation, north of Mankato, and ITC’s Huntley Substation, south of Winnebago. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2020. Xcel Energy officials are reaching out to affected landowners to conduct surveys, soil borings and acquire the necessary easements. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission issued a written order approving the Huntley-Wilmarth transmission line project in August 2019. The Commission voted in favor of the proposed purple route (including segments BB and L). Additionally, the Commission directed Xcel Energy and ITC Midwest to review an approximately two-mile section in the Watonwan River area and report back to the Commission on the merits of the alternative within 60 days of the written order. Xcel Energy studied alternate routes in the Wantonwan River area and presented the analysis to the Commission. In November 2019, the Commission voted in favor of the green route on the two-mile section (view map on back). Need and Benefits The Huntley-Wilmarth project will provide several local and regional benefits including relieving congestion on the transmission grid, increasing transmission capacity to deliver low cost energy to customers, supporting new generation development, including renewable energy and increasing property tax revenues to local governments. The new transmission line will support Xcel Energy’s bold vision to deliver 100 percent carbon-free electricity to customers by 2050. Public Feedback Xcel Energy and ITC Midwest appreciate your comments and questions surrounding the project, and took them into account when proposing routes for approval, making several changes throughout the public comment process. Public open houses were held in the project area as an opportunity for residents to provide comments and questions, and several public hearings took place.
