Welcome back!!

Some of you may recognise this information from last year; however, it is very important! Homework As we begin the new school year many parents/carers may have questions about high school homework, which can be very different from primary school. Individual teachers will discuss the homework expectations they have with their class, however, as a general rule the advice we provide is to ensure that your child is revising their class work regularly at home.

In 2016, HRHS began an initiative called Focus on Writing. One of our strongest messages to students is that, “ Writing is not talking written down”. Essentially this means that when students are writing for school purposes, their writing needs to become more academic and formalised, and therefore less conversational. With this in mind we have been explicitly teaching students how to write well using the ‘Fantastic 4’. Students new to our school will be taught these strategies in class. The first strategy is the TEEEC paragraphing system. Each classroom should have a poster to guide students in developing strong paragraphs when writing. There is a scaffold attached to this newsletter that parents/carers could use with their children to encourage them to complete their homework with or to reflect on the learning that took place during the school day. The next strategy is Nominalisation – students may call it ‘Noms’. This involves

encouraging students to review their writing and identify opportunities to ‘nominalise’ verbs. This process can improve students writing by making it more academic and formal, and therefore less conversational.

Please remind your children when they are completing assessment or homework tasks to make use of TEEEC paragraphs and ‘Noms’ in developing responses to questions. This year the focus will be on ‘given and new’ and ‘packing the noun’. We will also begin some work on a strategy called ALARM.

If you would like any further information about my role, Homework or our Focus on Writing strategies, please contact me. Christine Reilly Deputy Principal—Teaching & Learning

P-TECH NEWS

P-TECH is well and truly making its mark around the school here at Hunter River High School (HRHS). The students came back to a surprise in their classrooms thanks to P-TECH. The Australian Government has invested $5.1 million to pilot the P-TECH model in Australia across 14 sites. A portion of funding has been provided to the Port Stephens Partnership at our school.

We are so excited to share this news with our school community, because it means we are now able to incorporate authentic teaching, innovative learning tools and technology into the once traditional classroom for Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering and STEM.

Special thanks to Mrs Janette Lyons (Technology Support Officer) and Mr Al Simmons (General Assistant) for coming in through the school holidays to prepare the new look classrooms with brand new technology that allows Mr Shane Lloyd (Head Teacher TAS) and Mr Rob D'Elboux (STEM Coordinator), the opportunity to broaden the scope of learning.

“The first thing I did was introduce Google Classroom into the curriculum." Said Mr Shane Lloyd.

He says, the benefit of this beyond the classroom, is that the interaction is constant between teacher and student, and we are inviting our P-TECH Industry Partners into our digital classroom via Cloud based learning systems to ensure all things P-TECH are accessible.

Not only does HRHS have a state of the art Trade Training Workshop for P-TECH students studying Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering, there is now a break out room to the side of this that is fully equipped with the latest technology systems that offer real life, simulated work stations for their theory components.

This investment, thanks to The Australian Government Department of Education and Training and Skilling Australia Foundation, will greatly assist the future and sustainability of P-TECH at our school.

"I love how I can communicate with the class online about what we learnt today." – Matt Griffiths

"I feel like having these computers is going to let us check out 3D images online, actual You Tube clips of 21st century engineering concepts that will help us learn what happens in the workplace" – Abby Menchin

“The future is bright for students”, Mr Shane Lloyd stated.

P-TECH is allowing us to work together with our local employers to find out what they want their new recruits to know. Not only can we come up with the ideas, this technology is the way forward for teachers to unlock new ways to make their ideas happen faster with more accessible resources. Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program. On March 20, 2018 the School Immunisation Clinic will visit Hunter River High School and the following vaccines will be offered:

Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to: Read all the information provided Complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like their

child to receive Return the completed consent form to their child’s school Ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic. Please note that students who commence HPV vaccination in school clinics in Year 7 but do not complete the course during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8. Students who have dose 1 HPV at their GP will be advised to complete the course with their GP. Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/withdraw_consent.aspx To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year where possible. A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card.

Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that

their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.
