With the holiday season coming up, here are a few things that I love most:

1. The days off .2. Sometimes, the days off are during the

week as opposed to a weekend.3. Some of the days off don’t coincide with

a Korean Public holiday. Why does this matter to me, you ask? The reason this matters to me is tri-fold; a lot of businesses in Korea off er weekday discounts, there won’t be much traffi c on the way there and there won’t be too many people there.

For these special days, I like to pick super popular places where the Koreans like to spend time with their friends and family for a celebration. During the snowy season, I love heading towards the sledding/skiing spots in or around Seoul, hot springs, spas and last but not least, buff ets.

Now to the average person, a buff et is imagined as an area with a range of hot and cold foods. Now, to the Korean person, the buff et is a lot of food, but it will have a lot of

variety, cooked fresh, without compromise to the presentation. It won’t be dumped in a heated tray and there will be so much choice that you won’t know where to start fi rst.

During Veteran’s Day, we met some friends of ours who took us to ‘Very Happy Day’ Buff et in Cheonan, a 30-40 minute drive away. The building is a stand-alone building with wedding halls and a basement buff et hall. You get 2 hours from the time of seating to indulge in what I would say is one of the best buff ets in the Pyeongtaek/Cheonan region. Trust me, I’ve been to all the buff ets in the Pyeongtaek area.

They had a range of cook stations where you could order steaks and barbeque to order, fresh noodle soups and pastas, fresh baked pizzas, sushi, Chinese food, dim sum dumplings, Korean food, salads, hibachi, Brazilian churascaria, fondue, a dessert station, a fresh baked bread section (I need to take a deep breath before I continue with my list), ice creams, fruits, soft drinks, a fancy coff ee machine that made

cappuccinos and latté’s and on your way out, just in case you haven’t had enough, you get to take a coff ee away in a to-go cup after payment. I most defi nitely have missed listing a few of the other sections that were there, but I keep falling into a food coma just thinking about it.

NOTE: There is a price diff erence between going on a day over a weekend vs. a weekday. However, they make up for the extra price and crowd by off ering lots more seafood and crab legs and a few more

Overall, this place was awesome. I might have given up after one hour of slow eating this time, but next time I go, I’m going to go prepared and will make sure I eat for the ENTIRE two hours.

Traditional craft techniques developed in Korea have been handed down from generation to generation. It helps make craft designers create aesthetic expressions and beautiful artwork.

Najeon Craft (나전 공예)

Traditionally lacquered products were decorated with the mother-of-pearl inlay and it was called Najeon Chilgi(나전칠기).

The two main materials used in Najeon craft are the lacquer coating and mother-of-pearl. Various kinds of seashells are used and green snail and abalone shell are highly preferred. It is led carefully with a whetstone to reveal the iridescent

inner layers and cut into many shapes. The strips are decorated onto the surface of an object. Lacquer is applied to the surface before and after the inlay and then the excess lacquer is led away to expose part of shells. This crafting process needs a high degree of patience and accuracy.

Najeon Chilgi was widely used in times past. Wardrobes, armoires, stationery chests, cabinets and sewing box all used this process. They also had with many kinds of patterns such as the four gracious plants (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo) which symbolize the four seasons, owers, birds and landscapes.

Najeon Chilgi is not only beautiful with shiny shells, but the pitch-black lacquer makes the shell’s brilliant colors come alive. Ceramic Craft (도자공예)Pottery is one of the major cultural properties of Korea ever since it was introduced in Korea between 6000 and 5000 B.C. Today, Korean ceramics are in the limelight for their high quality, elegance and style. Let’s discover together this art that contributed to the fame of Korea in Asia.

The Goryeo period (918-1392 A.D.) is characterized by the predominance of celadon. Korean celadon is different from others because of their inlaid designs as opposed to painted. It can be said that the art of celadon really developed in Korea. It was popular for ornaments in Buddhist temples. During the Joseon period (1392-1910 A.D.), two styles coexisted: porcelain and buncheong style. Buncheong potteries are characterized by a rather free and dramatic stylings. They are often bluish green or brownish black with white motifs. Porcelains came in various forms and techniques such as undecorated,

inlaid, cobalt blue painted, copper painted and iron painted.

Jewelry Craft (귀금속 공예)Korean Jewelry of past are mainly made of gold, silver and other precious jewels, including jade, glass, pearl, coral and amber. The key artifact of the Three Rivaling Kingdom Dynasty (400-700 A.D.) is the Silla Kingdom’s gold crown. This crown is popular for its tree-like shape branches and the whole surface has jade and glass beads dangling with tiny golden mirrors decorated on the edge of the branches. There are two chains made in a leaf-like shape with gold on the sides of the headband.

Glass bead accessories at the time were an unusual feature and is proof of the robust trade activities amongst other cultures, as glasswork originated only from Rome in the past. Today, numerous artists throughout the country are still making great efforts to rediscover forgotten production techniques that represents Korea’s beautiful traditional aesthetics.
