the top of a hill to an opening with a view that was unbelievable. The ocean danced smoothly in the distance, the sun shined on the hills, and the trees swayed in the breeze. It was peaceful, breathtaking, and beautiful. One of my favorite moments out of our whole trip was this one.
As the trekking adventure ended, a new one began. We were ready to grab our rst taste of thai food.
There is one phrase that Charles kept saying throughout the trip and it stuck with me, “you can either get great food and not so great atmosphere or OK food with a great atmosphere.”
We chose to go for the great food. We went to this very small outdoor restaurant located right off the street. I ordered one of Thai’s well known culture dishes called som tum (papaya salad) which became one of our many favorite dishes.
Towards the end of our day, we raced to Kata beach so we could catch the sunset and then we headed off to dinner with a family friend at a rooftop restaurant.
Over the next couple days, we visited Karon beach, where we all played beach volleyball with the locals until 2 a.m. and bought a lantern that we could light up and let it go into the night.
I had my rst banana pancake on this beach and let me tell you, I never thought nutella and bananas cooked on a thin crepe like pancake would taste so good.
Later on, Charles and I went on a long two hour motorbike trip (one of the main transportation vehicles in Thailand) to the Nakkerd Hills where I heard it has one of the best views of the island. We rode along the beach and through
the jungle and it was beautiful. I have never experienced anything like this before. The only down part was the roads got very bumpy at times and a little uncomfortable. Once we arrived to Nakkerd Hills, we had to walk up very long and multiple staircases to reach the
top. However, once we got there, the scenery was gorgeous and
ADVENTURES OF PHUKET, THAILAND
Petting tigers, riding
elephants, banana pancakes, beautiful beaches, and a jungle environment is only a small amount Thailand has to offer when you go and visit.
My husband Paul and I recently had an opportunity to take a week long trip to Phuket, Thailand for our rst year anniversary to spend time with family and friends.
It was a great choice not just because of what it has to offer but also how it is very affordable for activities, food, lodging and more.
We stayed in a nice, hidden townhome neighborhood along with my brother-in-law Charles and six missionary friends who were visiting the same time we were. The neighborhood had a pool in the middle of the complex with a small wooden bridge going over it, surrounded by beautiful landscape.
One thing I learned quickly is that there are Seven Eleven’s on every corner, of every street. Whatever you need, whether it is sunscreen, makeup, bug spray, delicious panini sandwiches and anything else you can think of, they have it. It became very convenient since we were on the road majority of the time.
Being an animal lover, the day nally
came to go to Tiger Kingdom to get up-
close and personal with some tigers.Nervous and excited, Paul
and I went to the counter to choose what size of tiger we wanted
to encounter and take pictures with. They had three sizes: large tigers (16-36 months), medium tigers (11-15 months) and small tigers (5-10 months old).
We chose to go with the small tigers and it was a great experience. They were very playful, soft to pet, lots of fun and the staff was great. I recommend going here especially if you have kids.
Soon after, we got back into the car and headed to our next destination: elephant trekking in the jungle.
I have never touched or even been face to face with an elephant before. The closest I got to one was at a local zoo and this place, was much different.
The trek was beautiful, romantic and relaxing. Riding the elephants through the jungle gave us an opportunity to see and explore Thailand in a new and unique way.

well worth the ride and hike. We saw the island as far as the eye could see and it was crazy that we could see the city where we were staying from here. We took in a few moments and then it was back on the motorbikes to head home.
During our last day in Thailand, Paul and I wanted to try some authentic Thai street food. Charles took us to Kalim, where all you can see was food carts lined up and down the street along the beach. The aromas of the food just lled the air and it was so hard for me to choose one dish so I chose many. I grabbed me some som tum, fried chicken-on-a-stick and pad thai noodles, another well-known culture Thai dish. Paul went with pad thai noodles, sticky rice with mango, and chicken-on-a-stick.
We all sat down behind the food carts and gazed into the ocean’s horizon for one last sunset.
I could not think of a better way to end our trip in Thailand.

Some of the reasons that Korean drama is so popular are the many various genres of dramas, the production values and being able to learn more about the Korean culture and language. Above all, the main reason of Korean drama’s popularity as an in uence and popularity of the Korean wave are the many Hallyu stars that gain popularity worldwide. As their popularity worldwide gets bigger, the investment of foreign capital helps the quality of production.
Korean variety shows are also popular all over the world. Examples of some famous ones are “Running Man” (런닝맨), “In nite Challenge” (무한도전), “I Am a Singer” (나는 가수다), “Dad! Where Are We Going?” (아빠! 어디가?) and the earlier mentioned Non-Summit (비정상회담). Many countries have exclaimed interest in remaking Korean variety shows in their own country’s style, China being the major player in this trend. They are already remaking 4 Korean variety shows as you read this article and the most famous example is Running Man. Running Man is the most popular Korean variety show all over the world. Do you know about Hallyu (Korean Wave)? It is a wide-spreading Korean contemporary culture trend that’s spreading all over the world! There are various forms of Hallyu trends: K-Pop songs (idol groups), Korean variety shows, K-dramas and lms, Korean foods, Korean styling, etc.
Part two of this six part series will introduce famous Korean dramas and variety shows, a recent addition to the Hallyu trend. TV programs have recently gained more attention worldwide due to the number of Korean entertainers, celebrities and idol groups that have been featured or done guest appearances. Let’s get to know about some of the more famous Korean dramas and variety shows!
A program that may interest you is one called “Non-Summit” (비정상회담). This talk show stars non-Korean men who now live here and they discuss topics pertaining to Korean culture through the eyes of a foreigner. On February 1st, a guest star from Vietnam said that Korean TV shows are gaining popularity all over the world. The reason why he became interested in Korea is due to a show called “Dae Jang Geum”
(대장금), a famous historical drama. While watching, he thought that the Hangeul alphabet looked so adorable that he wanted to learn it. Another example of a famous historical drama is “Heo Jun” (허준). Heo Jun is still popular in Africa and Islamic cultures, even though it was rst aired 16 years ago. The drama has an 80% viewer rating in the Middle East. When the actor Jun Kwang-Ryul visited Iraq, one of the airport’s walls reportedly collapsed because of the many fans.
The historical pieces aren’t the only famous Korean dramas; fantasy drama or soap opera have also gained a lot of traction. Examples include “Secret Garden” (시크릿 가든), “My Love From Another Star” (별에서 온 그대), “Those Who Wants the Crown, Bears the Weight – The Heirs”

The goal of the show is a simple game of ripping off name tags on the Running Man’s members’ backs. The simplicity of the
name-tag ripping game has been sweeping throughout the whole world. Many people buy their own name tag and play the game themselves. The most wanted name tag is
the one belonging to long-time member Kim Jong-Kook. His character on the show is one of strength and speed like a tiger. Even with alliances, handicaps or special items, no one is able to take off his name tag. Even with 3 members going after it at the same time, he is able to defend his name tag. Another long-time member is Lee Gwang-Soo, who can be either his partner or victim, depending on what the situation calls for. Lee Gwang-Soo’s popularity in Southeast Asia has earned him
the nickname ‘Asia Prince’. His character in Running Man is one of a con man and backstabber with a hint of bad luck. Due to his height (6’5”), he also has the nickname ‘Giraffe’ due to his long strides when he is running. These character traits make him funny and famous. The 2 members’ characters play off each other well. With alliances made and betrayed all the time for their own victory (and for the audience’s laughter), it is no wonder why this pairing is so popular. Another reason for Running Man’s popularity are the many famous Hallyu stars that show up as special guests.
So now we know about some of the famous Korean dramas and variety shows, I suggest tuning into some of them to learn more about the Hallyu Wave. I suggest My Love From Another Star, Running Man and In nite Challenge as a start.
