Humidity is simply a measure of water vapour in the air, while relative humidity is the ratio, in percent, of the moisture actually in the air to the moisture it would hold if it were saturated at the same temperature and pressure. If the relative humidity is 100%, it does not mean that there is only water, but that the air contains the maximum amount of humidity possible in those conditions.

Here is an example: at a temperature of 21 °C, 1 kg of dry air can hold up to 15.8 g of water vapour and it is said to be at 100% of relative humidity (RH). As the temperature changes, also the amount of water which can be held changes accordingly. In our case, while 1 kg of dry air at 21 °C can hold up to 15.8 g of water vapour, the same amount of air will hold just 0.92 g at 18 °C. If we cool down 1 kg of dry air at 21 °C and with a RH of 50%, we will reach the saturation at 9.5 °C. On the contrary, if we increase the temperature of 1 kg of dry air at -18 °C with a RH of 100% without adding extra water vapour, we will reach the equivalent of a RH of 6% at 21 °C

Humidity

Humidity-related problems

For the above mentioned reasons, the air of a room will be warmer and drier if the temperature outside falls below the temperature of the heated indoor environment. This happens when the humidity tries to find a balance between the indoor environment and its content and the air they come in contact with.

The adverse effects of this condition are the following:

• You breath excessively dry air which dries the mucosa of the respiratory tract• Natural materials, like wood, tend to be subject to cracking and shape changes• Static electricity in the air increases with negative effects on some individuals

We could experience the same effects with an air-conditioning system, which drains the ambient humidity (dehumidification) and therefore tends to dry the air and generate similar effects as the room temperature begins to rise. The dew point is the temperature to which a given parcel of air must be cooled for water vapour to condense into water (saturation).Dehumidification is the opposite process through which you can reduce or eliminate humidity in the air: by letting the air go through a cold body, humidity condenses when the dew point is reached.

Page 3: Humidity control catalogue 2013

A correct adjustment of humidity levels allows to optimize operating processes and the treatment of many materials, thus achieving qualitative excellence and optimal efficiency in production plants and improving health conditions in working environments.

In industrial and printing processes paper is wrapped in special waterproof materials that allow to keep the correct humidity and flawlessly continue the treatment. When this film is removed, the paper will act as a sponge and adjust its size and shape to room conditions. As the humidity level increases, the paper will swell and widen by several centimetres; on the contrary, we will have a shrinking effect with dry air.

It is easy to understand how such shape changes can negatively interfere with the processing carried out by precise industrial machinery which has been perfectly calibrated. This problem is particularly frequent in the printing industry, when you have to adjust the feed rollers as the humidity level changes and when you have to manage the spreading of ink that will be absorbed or not according to the level of ambient humidity. The rapid variation in such conditions, if uncontrolled, may lead to a series of problems in production and printing phases. The stabilization of environmental conditions, thanks to an adequate control of humidity, allows to keep the paper size, thus making the printing process quicker.

Printing processes

In humidification or dehumidification processes wood increases or reduces its size, thus creating cracks, splits, shrinkage and warping. As it dries, the wood absorbs the solvent of the finish and looks granular and matt. Similarly, adhesive joints become unstable as the wood absorbs the solvent of the glue before it can polymerize. In this case as well, the stabilization of environmental conditions allows the wood to keep the same size throughout the entire process, thus ensuring better results.

Polymerization: process of reacting monomer molecules together to form bigger molecules.

Wood-working

An excessively low ambient humidity results in a frequent filament breakage on looms due to their extreme dryness, thus increasing at the same time the presence of fibre particulate suspended in the ambient air which leads to a significant worsening of the room air quality.

With a correct humidification, however, you can improve the production efficiency of the machinery for weft spinning and fabric processing, slightly reduce the presence of suspended fibre particulate and consequently enhance air quality.

Textile industry

Page 5: Humidity control catalogue 2013

With the oncoming winter, central heating is turned on and the air in offices becomes immediately drier and charged with electrostatic energy. These conditions can be responsible for the onset of disorders affecting the respiratory system (i.e. tonsillitis), facilitate the transmission of viral diseases like flu and contribute to the presence of a higher than normal amount of suspended dust. Actually, you should change the dry air inside with the air coming from outside which is fresher and wet in order to ensure a healthy environment. In this process, however, there is a heat loss with a subsequent waste of energy for heating systems.

Offices

Meat, salami and vegetables are all products which are often processed or exposed without a protective and insulating wrapper. In this case, their wet percentage decreases, thus rapidly causing a reduction in terms of weight, quality and appearance.

For this reason, the control of humidity levels in environments destined to food storage and sale is essential for a better quality and an easier selling. Waste will be therefore significantly reduced, thus allowing to further cut costs and save money.

Food industry

Air quality does not only concern the health aspect, but also environmental comfort. As a matter of fact, excessively dry air will lead to a rapid skin water loss and a subsequent feeling of discomfort and dryness that will make us feel the need to frequently rehydrate.

Keeping the right humidity rate also means to improve the quality of life in the working environment.

Comfort and health

Chips become smaller and smaller and distances are measured in ångströms.

For this reason, even a small variation in the size of a silicon wafer during a photo masking may cause unacceptable consequences in terms of functioning of components.

Electronic industry

The speed of modern looms and the extreme fineness of yarns, both natural and synthetic, require high rates of relative humidity: percentages between 65% and 85% are indicated both in summer and winter. Currently available steam systems involve very high operating costs in terms of power consumption and maintenance, in addition to a quite long time for thermal inertia. Neo Tech high-pressure adiabatic systems, with their small size and high efficiency, allow to humidify in very short time the industrial spaces housing looms and teasers. The operating saving can be 40 times higher than a traditional steam system. Moreover, you have to consider that in summer, when the temperature inside the facilities is high, hot atomization is extremely inappropriate due to obvious climate reasons within the plants. The adiabatic atomization takes place at temperatures lower than 14 °C and allows an immediate evaporation together with the major benefit of cooling. In this way the personnel does not have to frequently stop the machines due to yarn splitting, thus leading to a production slowdown and an increase in hourly rates for skilled staff, who would be otherwise engaged in other activities.

Last but not least, another benefit is the significant reduction in the volatility of fluff that may cause problems to the respiratory system and affect the purity of the weft. Actually, when looms work fabrics of different colours you have to preserve their purity: however, in a room where there is a high concentration of particles of different colours, these could accidentally get into near machines thus causing impurity and negatively affecting their quality. An adiabatic system is a synonym for energy savings, less pollution, cuts in personnel costs, improvement of the product quality, reduction of maintenance, shortening of reaction times with zero outage time, and cooling in summer: in the end, if you don’t consider this system you will make an uneconomic choice.

The high hygroscopicity of paper tends to make it absorb a huge amount of ambient humidity. If you also consider winter heating or summer air-conditioning, the result is that the working environment is extremely dry, with a percentage of relative humidity close to 20-25%, while the optimal threshold ranges between 45% and 55%. The various undesired effects include extremely high static charge in the air, volatility of fine particles, early drying of printing inks, deformation of paper profiles, mucosal dryness in people working near the machines. Room atomization is therefore fundamental to prevent static electricity from leading to the frequent overlapping of sheets of paper in rotary machines and in the printing phase. The early drying of inks – if used – results in a poor printing quality in addition to frequent cleaning operations for print heads. The volatility of fine particles, like those of toners, is reduced thanks to atomization: in this way you can also reduce the presence of the bacilli which cause an increase in the incidence of viruses in individuals, thus making the environment healthier and closer to the right physiological balance. A correct humidification allows to prevent sheets from losing their original shape, thus leading to frequent blocking of rotary machines and transfer to sorters. That translates into a better product quality, optimal environmental conditions, major reduction in down time, abatement of static electricity and suspended dust. In such environments computer-controlled micrometric machines are required, as they can offer an immediate atomization that adjusts to thermal-hygrometric conditions, both in summer and in winter. Moreover, these machines have to be characterized by small size and low operating costs.

The distribution of fresh food, both of vegetable and animal origin, entails significant microclimate problems that affect the quality of products and consequently their sale.

All hypermarkets and supermarkets of any size are now equipped with air-conditioning and heating systems, which considerably improve the environmental quality for users but slightly worsen the storage conditions for products. As a matter of fact, both summer air-conditioning and winter heating remove the humidity and alter the optimal temperature conditions for products, thus resulting in a significant loss in terms of mass and consistency. In the fruit and vegetable industry, greens and fruit lose a high percentage of humidity in the environment, with a subsequent loss of consistency that undermines their aspect and a weight loss that directly affects the final profit. A similar problem can occur for the storage of sliced salami and ham.

Actually the fat mass, which is mostly made up of water, tends to slightly lose mass and weight in a room where the relative humidity is lower than 50%. If stored in a vertical meat locker for more than 10 days, a ham can lose up to 10-15% of its weight.

Humidity in the food industry

If you consider that this product, like fruit and vegetables, is marketed at considerable weight and costs, it is easy to understand the improvement in terms of sale proceeds and quality perceived by customers. Neo Tech proposes ato-mization systems with a double function: keeping the product cold and guaranteeing its qualitative integrity thanks to humidification.

Our systems are supplied with a water filtering device and a sterilization unit in order to prevent the formation of germs. The commercial activities that could be mostly interested in this system would be those characterized by the quickest product turnover: if you do some rough calculations you will conclude that the return on the investment is sometimes possible in few months thanks to an improvement in terms of profit and quality of the product, which stays intact and keeps the same organoleptic properties. This system may also be installed in the special cold rooms of manufacturing companies.

Humidity and temperature are controlled through the computerized Humidity Control system, which can work as a stand-alone unit or be interfaced with the control systems that are already being used. Similarly, our system can also be used in the storage areas of the dairy sector.

Humidity Control System

Humidity Control systems represent the latest generation of atomizing humidifiers with a power consumption of just 4 watts per litre/hour of atomized water (less than 1% of any steam humidifier). Neo Tech products are indicated for any application requiring a high humidification capacity up to 600 kg/hour. We also offer customized models for capacities up to 900 kg/hour, even for continuous 24-hour operation.

A special pump, which is manufactured by companies belonging to our Group, generates high-pressure water (up to 105 bar) that is then atomized through stainless steel nozzles with ceramic orifices producing an extremely fine and uniform mist. The droplets (4 µm) which are generated evaporate spontaneously and immediately, thus humidifying and cooling the air.

The sophisticated control system combines the action of a touch-screen computer, through which you can adjust the flow rate of the pump, with a series of electrovalves that activate only the nozzles required: in this way the system always operates at the optimal pressure for water atomization within a wide capacity range.

Page 13: Humidity control catalogue 2013

Room distribution

The solution is characterized by a stainless steel distribution system (pipes) with nozzles that are installed in a room that has to be humidified or cooled down. In addition, we offer ventilated distributors using a tangential or an axial fan, which is automatically managed by the control unit. These devices generate an air flow which assists the evaporation of droplets and provides an air cushion, so as to ensure an essentially horizontal trajectory until evaporation is complete. Neo Tech systems manage the electrovalves that control the capacity of the system and run the automatic washing cycles of the plant.

Technical benefits

The touch-screen device automatically controls and manages the following operations:

• Lines are filled only when humidification is required• Lines are depressurized when no humidification is required• Lines are automatically washed at regular intervals when humidification is not required for an extended period of time.

These processes ensure high hygiene standards, without requiring manual washing and/or emptying procedures.

When using adiabatic sy-stems, not only is atomisa-tion of fundamental impor-tance, but the control of the flow of water molecules as well. For this reason Natu-ral Cool has developed an integrated digital control sy-stem that allows the mana-gement of multiple features simultaneously. Precision thermohygrometric mana-gement, combined with a digital timer, allows the de-livery of correct quantities in any environmental con-dition in accordance with the precise choices of the user, such as temperature, water supply and operating pressure, and preserves the longevity and operational quality. The display also allows the reading of other necessary information such as periodic check-ups, temperature and relative humidity in the room, and the set parameters. It is possible to see and rapidly modify the parameters for the idling and working times of the high pressure misting module, so as to be able to adapt atomisation to the changing needs of the day. The qualities of a superior mechanism means are nothing without an advanced control system. Natural Cool is the only company today that produces such dedicated digital control system, without resorting to external accessories which have been created for different needs.

GSM Control

For the first time the adia-batic cooling and micro-atomization market has seen the presentation of a digital GSM control for the complete operational and automation manage-ment of our pump models. Through a simple GSM message addressed to the SIM card inserted in the atomizing unit it is possible to receive all the operatio-nal alarms, such as, lack of water, overheating, plant leak and the notification of the various programmed maintenance operations, in order to promptly know of a possible fault and quickly fix it.Imagine one of your customers calling to tell you that excessive atomization is tending to condense and asking for assistance.By means of a text message it is possible to change the pause and work times and alter the target humidity value, limiting the quantity of water in the environment and avoiding the costs of possible onsite assistance. The manager of a restaurant complains that the motor is hot. Through the sending of an SMS it is possible to check the working pressure and pump temperature, just like the number of hours atomizing since first being turned on.Possible set-ups and changes can be carried out, again through a simple text message.
