A Message F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T

There are 2.19 billion children in the world today – seventy-five million in the U.S. alone. Every one of their young lives is threatened by the use of nuclear weapons, as is all they love and cherish.

Nuclear weapons are insanely powerful. They cause extreme suffering and widespread death. They cannot distinguish between combatants and civilians. They are long-distance killing devices, cowardly in conception. Nuclear weapons have zero redeeming qualities and our global goal must be zero nuclear weapons.

The nine nuclear-armed countries are all engaged in modernizing their nuclear arsenals. The United States plans to spend $1 trillion on modernizing its nuclear arsenal over the next three decades. It will upgrade its nuclear warheads and replace its land-based, sea-based and bomber-based nuclear delivery systems. It will make its nuclear weapons smaller, more accurate, and thereby more usable. It will modernize weapons whose primary purpose is to annihilate whole populations and whose effects cannot be contained in time or space.

Surely there are far better ways to spend $1 trillion than on preparing for global annihilation, including providing food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, healthcare for those in need, and education for all children.

The United States led the way into the Nuclear Age, and we believe it should provide leadership in bringing the Nuclear Age to an end by fulfilling its legal obligations under international law to negotiate in good faith for an end to the nuclear arms race (modernization) and for total nuclear disarmament. If not the United States, who? If not now, when?

BEFORE INTERNING AT NAPF, WHAT WAS YOUR EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND? HOW FAMILIAR WERE YOU WITH ISSUES IN THE NUCLEAR AGE?

Before interning at NAPF, I was a junior at Hendrix College, a nationally acclaimed liberal arts college in Arkansas. I had just finished a semester-long study abroad program focused on comparative human rights in New York, Nepal, Jordan, and Chile. Like many of our generation, I knew little about the Nuclear Age beyond World War II, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the occasional debate about nuclear power. Nuclear weapons were barely on my radar. It wasn’t until I began to search for summer internships that I learned about NAPF's amazing work, and the modern issues related to nuclear weapons.

WHAT WAS THE MOST SURPRISING THING YOU LEARNED AT NAPF?

The most surprising thing I learned was about the nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands. I had known about nuclear testing in New Mexico when the bomb was initially invented, but I didn’t know that other tests had taken place. The fact that our government could test nuclear weapons and knowingly destroy the environment, health, and lives of the Marshall Islanders was truly shocking for me.

WHAT WAS THE MOST MEANINGFUL PROJECT YOU WORKED ON AT NAPF?

Sadako Peace Day allowed me to interact with others who believe in a nuclear free world. Just hearing the stories of survivors mixed with the poems and stories of younger generations, all who shared the same hope of a nuclear free world, was deeply moving.

HOW HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES HERE HELP TO SHAPE YOUR FUTURE?

Now more than ever, I’m motivated to take part in local activist activities and participate in local struggles where a difference can be made. My experience with NAPF has shown me that small groups of people from around the globe have the power to affect a single cause. NAPF helped me realize that my interests lie in working with NGOs to make a difference in the world – one step at a time.

In a world searching for a moral alternative to war and violence, NAPF’s Peace Leadership Director, Paul K. Chappell, offers an enlightened path to peace, and alternatives and antidotes to violence and dehumanization.

In 2015, the Peace Leadership Program reached over 5,000 students, activists, and concerned citizens, both nationally and internationally. Many more were inspired by the program's videos and articles. Chappell's keynote speeches have included the Clifford and Virginia Durr lecture series at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, the UNESCO Model UN Summer Camp in Hood, Maryland, and the CMM Institute Learning Exchange in Munich, Germany.

Paul has recently created the new NAPF Peace Literacy program, based on the seven forms of Peace Literacy. It presents a way forward to a world without war and unnecessary conflict in the same way the ability to read paved the way for achievements in science and technology.

Through the Peace Leadership and Peace Literacy programs, NAPF shines a penetrating light on the issues of war and peace in the 21st century and offers clarity of vision for a better future.

When I heard Paul speak, I was impressed by his down-to-earth demeanor, on and off stage. It was a fantastic experience having Paul teach a Peace Leadership workshop to my PeaceJam group. WHAT DID YOU FIND MEANINGFUL ABOUT THE PEACE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM?

After reading Paul Chappell's recent book, The Cosmic Ocean, I heard more meaning in some of the things people said around me. Paul shows a path to a more compassionate world through the simple things we do each day. This is how I too believe the world is changed.

The U.S. has more than 7,000 nuclear weapons in its arsenal. This is tremendous overkill when one considers that a regional exchange of relatively small nuclear weapons could cause a decade-long “nuclear famine” that would destroy agriculture and kill hundreds of millions. Yet, rather than eliminating its nuclear weapons, the U.S. plans to spend $4 million per hour for the next 30 years making them more lethal. That’s $1 trillion spent on killing rather than living.

On APRIL 24, 2014,The Marshall Islands (RMI) filed landmark lawsuits against the nine nuclear armed nations in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and against the United States in U.S. Federal Court to hold these nations accountable for their breaches of Article VI of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and for failing to comply with their obligations under international law to pursue negotiations for the worldwide elimination of nuclear weapons.

U . S . C A S E

On FEBRUARY 3, 2015, the U.S. case was dismissed by the U.S. District Court on the jurisdictional grounds of standing and political question doctrine. The RMI filed its Appeal Brief on July 13, 2015. We now await the response from the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

I C J C A S E S

From MARCH 7 - 16, 2016 , the International Court of Justice heard oral arguments in the preliminary phase of the nuclear disarmament cases brought by the Marshall Islands against India, Pakistan and the United Kingdom. The hearings were the first contentious cases on nuclear disarmament ever heard at the ICJ and addressed the respondent nations’ objections to the cases relating to questions of jurisdiction and admissibility. The Court’s 16 justices will decide, likely before the end of 2016, whether the cases will proceed on their merits to the next phase.

We would like to thank the RMI legal team without whom these cases would not have been heard. A complete list of the legal team, as well as the latest information on the lawsuits, can be found at nuclearzero.org.

Over the next three decades, the U.S. plans to spend $1 trillion modernizing its nuclear arsenal. Just this year alone, the government will spend over $35 billion on these weapons of mass annihilation. We can and must do better. What of our nation’s 15 million homeless families? Or the 20 million children in this country who go to bed hungry each night? What of our crumbling infrastructure? Join with us in working to halt this illegal and immoral use of funds. Help us to ensure a just and peaceful world for all of humanity, free from the all-too-real horror of nuclear annihilation.
