Ninety-four Degrees in the Shade 1876
Artist: Lawrence Alma-Tadema Medium: Oil on canvas
FOCAL POINTEyes are drawn to the man
laying down reading a book
USE OF COLORWhite of the man’s clothing
makes him stand out against the other colors. Use of warm colors give a calming and relaxing feel to the painting The green in the trees and some of the grass and the golden color of some of the grass indicate it may be a hot summer day.
Picture is depicting a field worker who is taking a break from the hot sun. He appears to have
found a shady spot because the grass is a little greener where he lays.
The picture is also lighter at the top and darker near the bottom.
It also appears that the wind may be blowing . If you look at the center the large grassy area is actually leaning to the left.
The man is also holding the right side of the book as if to hold that page in place.
