after you make your initial payment. • A medical policy and Summary of Benefits and Coverage – These official documents are sent after your initial payment
and should be kept for your records. Keep these documents in a safe place, although it’s a good idea to carry your Humana member ID card with you –
especially when you go to the doctor, hospital or pharmacy.
Make an appointment with your primary care physician for a preventive care checkup This visit gives your doctor a chance to get to know you so he or she can be a true partner in helping you achieve lifelong

• Your primary care physician (PCP) – Your doctor’s office is the first place to call if it’s not an emergency. Your PCP knows your health history and is your best option for routine care. Some Humana plans require that you use an in-network doctor. However, regardless of plan type, you’ll always save more by visiting in-network doctors. Check the enclosed Benefit Summary to learn more about the specifics of your plan.
• Urgent care center – A great choice if your doctor isn’t available and you need care right away for something like the flu, infections, minor burns or sprains. Walk in and get care from experienced doctors and nurses. Many are open on nights and weekends. Again, check the enclosed Benefit Summary to learn if your plan requires a PCP referral for urgent care.
• Emergency room – When you have a life-threatening emergency like a heart attack, stroke, head injury, severe bleeding or you cannot breathe, go immediately to the nearest emergency room. Keep in mind that if you use the emergency room for non-emergencies, you may have longer waiting times and higher out-of-pockets costs.
If you’re not sure about your best option for treatment, call the HumanaFirst® Nurse Advice Line at 1-800-622-9529 (TTY: 711) 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our nurses can help you decide which level of care is right for you.
