DAWN VILLELLA - AP

WolvesJune 26, 2013 11:55 am • By Brian Smith TWIN FALLS, Idaho • As the federal government seeks to pull the gray wolf off the endangered species list, conflicts between ranchers and gray wolves in south-central Idaho are on the rise, with record livestock losses last year. Gray wolves killed 34 cattle and 79 sheep last year in the Southern Mountain region of the Sawtooth Range, which includes Camas and Blaine counties. Statewide, they destroyed 90 cattle and 251 sheep, said Todd Grimm, state wildlife services director for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In turn, hunters killed 330 wolves in Idaho in 2012, up from 200 the year before.

- - - -Although he’s lost many sheep to wolves, Peavey hasn’t been paid through the state’s compensation program for two years, he said. A lamb is worth $150 to $200, but he said death costs go beyond what he can count. A five-year federal program was developed to pay compensation nationwide, but that funding recently fizzled because of federal sequestration efforts, Miller said. In 2011, the program paid Idaho ranchers about $100,000 for livestock losses.

Elephants and livestock battle for water in East AfricaBy Emily Wither, CNNupdated 6:21 AM EST, Fri September 9, 2011

STORY HIGHLIGHTS- Drought means people and elephants are having

to use the same water points - Elephants are destroying farmers' crops as they

search for food, says expert

(CNN) -- As the Horn of Africa suffers its worst drought for 60 years, there are reports of growing conflict between people and wildlife over the region's limited resources. Conservationists say that in Kenya livestock herders and their animals are encroaching on water sources in protected areas, which is having a potentially devastating impact on the wildlife there -- particularly elephants. With the region getting hotter and dryer the battle for water is going to become even more of a problem in the future, says Angela Sheldrick, director of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust(DSWT), an organization that protects animals in Kenya.

“In drought conditions, when water points are few and possessively guarded, the Maasai and wildlife do come into regular conflict.”Angela Sheldrick, director DSWT
